GalaxEye’s US-Patented OptoSAR Technology and Plan for 30 Satellites in Five Years

GalaxEye says it plans to build a 30-satellite Earth-observation constellation over five years. The plan, reported by Reuters on 8 September 2026 alongside the company’s announcement of a US patent for synchronizing optical and radar sensors, has no published deployment-by-deployment schedule. Its first satellite, Mission Drishti, launched on 3 May 2026.

What does GalaxEye’s US patent cover?

Reuters reported that the patent concerns synchronizing optical and radar sensors so they can capture aligned images of the same location at the same time, including in cloud cover and darkness. GalaxEye describes this approach as OptoSAR: combining optical or multispectral imaging (MSI) with synthetic aperture radar (SAR).

The sources reporting the announcement do not provide a patent number or the patent’s claim-by-claim legal scope. The capability described should therefore be understood as GalaxEye’s reported technology, not as independent confirmation that every location is continuously observable or that all imagery will suit every use case. Reuters report republished by The Economic Times.

How does OptoSAR combine optical imaging and radar?

Optical imagery is generally easier to interpret, but clouds, darkness and weather can obstruct collection. SAR uses radar and can collect in conditions that interfere with optical sensors, though radar imagery can be harder to interpret. GalaxEye says Mission Drishti fuses the two sensor types in real time to produce aligned, analysis-ready imagery. The intended advantage is to bring optical context together with radar collection, rather than relying on either sensor alone. GalaxEye’s explanation of its approach.

GalaxEye’s mission page describes Drishti as carrying MSI and SAR on the same platform. The company calls it the first satellite mission to combine those sensor types on one platform; that is the company’s characterization, not an independently validated comparative finding. Its published specifications are:

Specification GalaxEye-published information
Launch 3 May 2026, aboard Falcon 9 from SLC-4E, California
Mass Approximately 190 kg
SAR-plus-MSI spatial resolution 1.2–3.6 m, as stated on the mission page
Fused resolution Approximately 1.8 m, as stated separately on the early-adopter page
Revisit frequency Four days
Orbit Sun-synchronous low Earth orbit at 500 ± 10 km
Listed bands X-band, panchromatic, RGB, NIR, coastal blue and red-edge

The 1.2–3.6 m range and approximately 1.8 m fused figure appear on different company pages; they are not interchangeable specifications. These are company-published figures, not a third-party performance assessment. Mission Drishti specifications and early-adopter information.

Has Mission Drishti launched?

Yes. GalaxEye says Mission Drishti launched on 3 May 2026. It is the first satellite in the company’s stated constellation plan and carries MSI and SAR together on one platform. The launch is a completed milestone; the larger 30-satellite constellation remains a plan. GalaxEye mission page.

How many satellites does GalaxEye plan to launch, and over what period?

Reuters reported on 8 September 2026 that GalaxEye plans a 30-satellite constellation over the next five years. The report does not give a launch schedule by year, a financing plan for the full deployment, a customer list or a detailed constellation design. The target should not be read as a confirmed annual launch cadence or as evidence that all 30 satellites are funded or scheduled.

Reuters also reported that the company had raised around $21 million and acquired Bengaluru-based spacecraft engineering firm StarOps in August to strengthen in-house manufacturing and satellite-system capabilities. GalaxEye says it was founded in 2021 by IIT Madras engineers. These details provide company context, but they do not establish how the constellation will be financed or deployed. What does the plan mean for organizations seeking satellite data?

GalaxEye’s early-adopter page invites organizations to discuss data access and collaboration. It lists co-development, preferential post-launch tasking, beta access, and technical support or consultation. The form identifies potential sectors including agriculture, forestry, maritime and fisheries, defense and security, disaster management, infrastructure, climate and environmental monitoring, insurance, financial services, energy and mining.

The public program description does not establish pricing, current licensing terms, geographic service coverage or final availability. Organizations evaluating the service should ask about sensor fusion and data products, spatial resolution, revisit and tasking frequency, coverage, processing level and formats, integration or API support, access terms, and service availability. Public information cited here is not sufficient to rank GalaxEye against other providers on those criteria. GalaxEye early-adopter page.

What is established—and what remains unclear?

  • Established as a company-reported milestone: Mission Drishti launched on 3 May 2026 with MSI and SAR on the same platform.
  • Reported announcement: GalaxEye says its US patent covers synchronization of optical and radar sensors for aligned, simultaneous imagery; a patent identifier and detailed legal scope are not given in the cited report.
  • Stated target: Reuters reported a plan for 30 satellites over five years, but no detailed deployment schedule or constellation architecture is supplied.
  • Performance evidence: GalaxEye publishes mission specifications and describes its imaging capabilities, but the cited sources do not provide an independent comparative performance evaluation.

GalaxEye CEO Suyash Singh told Reuters: “This patented technology enables us to serve the global markets and provide weather-agnostic imaging capabilities across sectors.” That is the company’s stated ambition; the available sources do not establish universal, continuous or guaranteed weather-independent coverage. Reuters report republished by The Economic Times.
