Most wired headphones use a 3.5 mm plug, but 6.35 mm (1/4-inch) and 2.5 mm connectors also exist. To identify yours, check the plug’s diameter and the device’s port, then check the plug’s contact layout: a plug that physically fits may not support a headset microphone or inline controls.
Common audio jack sizes
“Jack” can mean the socket on a device or the plug on a cable. The measurements below refer to connector diameter. Confirm the socket size in the device’s official specifications rather than assuming from the product category.

| Size | Where you may encounter it | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| 3.5 mm (about 1/8 inch) | Common on wired headphones and portable audio connections. Apple describes its 3.5 mm EarPods as compatible with devices that have a standard 3.5 mm headphone jack. | Check whether the plug is TRS or TRRS if you need microphone or remote functions. Apple’s EarPods and adapter guidance; Focusrite’s guide to TS, TRS and TRRS. |
| 6.35 mm (1/4 inch) | Found on some audio equipment and headphone outputs. | A 3.5 mm plug can connect to a compatible 6.35 mm output through a size adapter, but the adapter does not necessarily convert headset wiring or add microphone support. Focusrite; Apple Logic Pro documentation. |
| 2.5 mm | Specified as a headset/headphone interface in ITU-T P.381. | The standard’s mention of a size does not establish that a particular device supports it; check the device documentation. ITU-T P.381 (October 2020). |
USB-C and Lightning are device-port types, not diameters of conventional analog headphone plugs. Some devices use them for wired audio, often with a compatible adapter or USB audio accessory. Apple documents Lightning-to-3.5 mm and USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapters for supported devices, and explains USB-C audio options for supported iPhone models.
How to identify your plug and port
- Check the device specification. Look up the exact phone, computer, audio interface or other device model in its manual or official specifications. Confirm whether it has a 3.5 mm or other audio socket, or instead uses USB-C, Lightning or wireless audio.
- Measure the plug if needed. Compare the metal shaft’s diameter with a ruler or caliper. Do not force a plug into a socket that does not fit easily.
- Count the insulating bands. The bands separate conductive sections; the contact layout is commonly described as TS, TRS or TRRS. This is distinct from diameter: two plugs of the same size can have different wiring. Focusrite explains these layouts.
- Match the features you need. If you use a microphone, inline remote or audio interface, check that both the device and any adapter support the plug’s wiring and those functions. Apple’s Logic Pro documentation notes that some devices require TRS plugs: Use audio devices in Logic Pro.
What TS, TRS and TRRS mean
These labels describe the plug’s contacts, not its size. A TS plug has tip and sleeve contacts; TRS adds a ring; TRRS has two rings. In common headphone use, TRS often carries stereo audio, while TRRS can add a microphone connection. Wiring conventions and device support matter, so the label alone is not a guarantee of compatibility.

A TRRS headset may physically fit a TRS headphone output but fail to provide its microphone or controls, or otherwise behave unexpectedly. Focusrite documents this kind of TRRS/TRS mismatch in its connector guide.
Choosing the right adapter
Choose by the connection at both ends, not just by the word “headphone.” First identify the device port and headphone plug diameter; then check contact layout and whether you need listening only or also a microphone and remote.

| USB-C | Standard 3.5 mm | A compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm adapter. Apple says its adapter lets users connect devices with a standard 3.5 mm audio plug, such as headphones or speakers, to USB-C devices; check your host device and required headset functions. USB-C audio is not simply a smaller or larger analog plug: USB audio involves a digital device connection and USB Audio Device Class behavior. Apple’s technical note discusses the relevant USB audio standards: TN3190: USB audio device design considerations. An adapter’s compatibility and feature support depend on the adapter and host device, so verify both before relying on microphone or remote functions.

If the plug fits but the headset does not work correctly
- No sound: Confirm the device’s audio output selection and that the plug and adapter match its port. Check the device manual for supported audio connections.
- Sound works, microphone does not: Check whether the plug is TRRS and whether the host or adapter supports headset microphone input. A TRS headphone output may not accept that microphone connection.
- Inline controls fail: Verify support for the specific headset wiring and controls; physical fit alone does not ensure control compatibility.
- Adapter fits the socket but seems wrong: Distinguish a simple diameter adapter from a USB-C or Lightning audio adapter. They serve different kinds of ports and connections.
