What is the Mac App Store?
The Mac App Store is a digital storefront included with macOS. You can open it from the Dock or the Applications folder without installing or setting it up first. Browse categories or search for an app, then download it or buy it through the store. Apple’s guide to downloading apps on a Mac explains both store downloads and apps distributed from the web.

How do you download an app from the Mac App Store?

Open the App Store from the Dock or Applications folder.

Select Get for a free download or select the displayed price to buy a paid app, then follow any prompts.
Downloaded apps appear in Launchpad and the Applications folder. A Get button means the download is free; it does not rule out optional in-app purchases or subscriptions. Apple describes this distinction in its instructions for downloading apps from the App Store.

Is the Mac App Store the only place to get Mac apps?
No. Developers can distribute Mac apps through Apple’s store or directly from their own websites. The distribution route affects who handles distribution and updates: Apple hosts apps and updates in the store, while developers manage updates for apps they distribute themselves. Apple outlines these routes in its macOS software distribution documentation.

Only open software downloaded from the web when you trust its source. The store and direct distribution also differ in available services: Apple lists sandboxing and services such as in-app purchases and Game Center among the features associated with App Store distribution. Billing, downloads, and support depend on the app and how it is distributed.

What should you check before downloading?

Price and payment model: Check whether the app costs money upfront and whether its listing mentions in-app purchases or subscriptions.

Privacy details: Review the app’s privacy information, including whether it uses data such as location, browsing history, or financial information.

Many iPhone and iPad apps are available on Macs with Apple silicon, but not all of them. A developer may choose not to make an app available, or an app may rely on hardware that a Mac does not have. Apple describes availability in its overview of iPhone and iPad apps on Mac.
Apple Developer documentation says users running macOS 11 or later on Apple silicon Macs can access iPhone and iPad apps through the Mac App Store when the developer has not changed the app’s availability settings. That is a version- and developer-setting-specific condition, not a guarantee that every iPhone or iPad app will run on every Mac.
