The most useful Surface Laptop Ultra test would show whether its RTX Spark platform can deliver practical, sustained local AI and creator performance—and what it costs in battery life, heat, noise, and app compatibility. Microsoft says the laptop combines an NVIDIA Blackwell RTX GPU, Arm CPU cores, up to 128 GB of unified memory, and full CUDA support; those are manufacturer claims, not independent results. If you have access to a unit, send the exact configuration and repeatable measurements, not just a headline benchmark.
First, establish exactly which Surface Laptop Ultra you have
Before comparing results, identify the machine. Microsoft announced the Surface Laptop Ultra on May 31, 2026, and on October 7 said pre-orders were open, with availability beginning October 16. Microsoft also noted that early details could vary by region and remained subject to regulatory approval. A pre-release sample and a retail laptop may not represent the same hardware or firmware.

Microsoft described this as its first laptop combining a Blackwell RTX GPU, up to 128 GB of unified memory, and full CUDA support. It also claimed one petaflop of AI compute and local execution of models up to 120 billion parameters. The one-petaflop figure is NVIDIA’s theoretical FP4 TOPS figure using sparsity—not an observed application benchmark. Record the configuration and workload before drawing conclusions from any of these claims. Microsoft’s May 31 announcement and October 7 availability update provide the manufacturer’s stated details.

- State whether the unit is preproduction or retail, and note its region if known.
- Record ambient conditions and whether the laptop is plugged in, on battery, or using a particular performance profile.
Can it run local AI models usefully?
This is the defining test. Microsoft says the platform can run models up to 120 billion parameters locally, but that does not mean every model of that size will fit or perform well in every configuration. Model architecture, quantization, context length, batch size, runtime, and memory available to the workload all matter.

- Power that lasts all day – With 20 hours of battery life[3], the new Surface Laptop powers through your entire day, so you can create, work and stream from morning to night without reaching for a charger.
- Work at the speed of your ideas – Built with the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon X2 Elite (12 Core) processors, Surface Laptop delivers fast, AI‑accelerated performance—making it the most powerful Surface laptop for everything from multitasking to demanding workloads.
- The ports you need – Charge on-the-go, transfer data fast, or create the ultimate desktop set up with two USB-C / USB4[4] ports.
- Built-in AI Companion – Work smarter, create freely, and communicate with confidence—Copilot[5] on Windows 11 is always there to help.
- Name the model and version, runtime, quantization, context length, batch size, and any offloading or other memory-saving settings.
- Report whether the model loads, how much memory it uses, and whether it completes a defined prompt or generation task without errors.
- Measure time to first token and steady-state tokens per second over a repeatable prompt, and say how many runs you performed.
- Record power draw, temperature, and fan or noise behavior during the run; distinguish a short burst from sustained performance.
- For a 120-billion-parameter test, explain any compromises and whether the run is useful for interactive work rather than simply possible to start.
CUDA support and unified memory are important platform features, but they do not substitute for testing the software stack and the actual model. Microsoft’s platform description also discusses Windows ML and TensorRT support and says CUDA-accelerated PyTorch and other technologies are planned for RTX Spark; check the exact status of each framework and version at test time. Microsoft’s RTX Spark platform post describes the intended software context.
Test sustained creator and developer workloads
A useful creator comparison is a named task with a fixed input, application version, settings, output, and power condition—not a collection of unrelated scores. Test a render, export, compile, or image- or video-generation job that reflects the intended reader’s work. Separate GPU acceleration and CUDA performance from CPU-bound work, and report whether the application uses the GPU as expected.

- For image generation, name the model, resolution, steps, software version, and generation time.
Microsoft lists Blender, DaVinci Resolve, Cinema 4D, Redshift, Topaz Photo, CapCut, Cubase, Bitwig Studio, Affinity, Photoshop, and Premiere as native or optimized examples. It also says MATLAB officially supports Windows on Arm via Prism. Because the announcement mixes existing support with future plans, verify the precise app version, plug-ins, and acceleration path rather than assuming every listed workflow behaves identically.
Check Windows on Arm compatibility instead of assuming it
The platform uses Arm CPU cores, so app compatibility is a practical part of the review. Microsoft says Prism supports emulation for x86 applications and includes AVX and AVX2 enhancements, but a compatibility layer does not guarantee that every installer, plug-in, peripheral, GPU feature, or update path works.

- Check whether the application is native to Windows on Arm or runs under emulation.
- Test the reader-relevant plug-ins, device drivers, and peripherals, including install and update behavior.
- Verify GPU acceleration inside the application instead of treating successful launch as proof of full support.
- For games or specialist tools, check anti-cheat, driver, and kernel-level requirements.
Record failures and workarounds alongside successful tests. That makes it possible to tell whether a limitation belongs to the app, a driver, emulation, or the laptop configuration.
Measure the display and mobility claims
Microsoft lists a 15-inch mini-LED PixelSense Ultra touchscreen with up to 2,000 nits peak HDR brightness and 262 pixels per inch. To make a brightness result meaningful, specify the display mode, window size or pattern, and measurement instrument; peak HDR brightness is not the same as sustained full-screen brightness. Color-accuracy results need calibrated equipment and disclosed settings.

Microsoft calls battery life “all-day,” but says the claim is based on internal testing of pre-release units and varies with usage, settings, and other factors. It does not publish a numeric duration in the cited announcement. A useful battery test names the workload, screen brightness, refresh or power settings, network state, starting charge, and stopping point. Also measure weight, charging behavior, and surface temperatures rather than relying on portability impressions. Microsoft’s product announcement contains the stated display and battery claims.
Verify ports, performance comparisons, and repair access
Microsoft lists HDMI, USB-C, USB-A, SD-card, and headphone ports, but the announcement does not state their interface generations or transfer rates. Test actual file transfers, display output, charging, and SD-card speed; do not infer bandwidth from connector shape. Practical repair access is also worth documenting if you can inspect it safely and accurately.

Microsoft’s October update names RTX Spark versions of the ASUS ProArt P14 and P16, Dell XPS 16 Creator Edition, HP OmniBook Ultra 16, Lenovo Yoga 9n 2-in-1, and MSI Prestige N16 Flip AI+ as pre-order candidates shipping from October 16. Those names identify potential comparison machines, not equivalent configurations. Compare exact purchasable models on memory, sustained performance, app and driver support, display, portability, battery life under the same workload, ports, repairability, warranty, price, and availability before ranking them.
The same Microsoft post reports up to 2.1x faster time to first token, 4.3x faster AI image generation, and 6.2x faster AI video generation for Windows PCs with RTX Spark versus an Apple MacBook Pro 16-inch with M5 Pro and 64 GB of memory. Microsoft says these were Microsoft- and NVIDIA-commissioned tests conducted in September 2026 on selected preproduction systems with specific models, settings, and workloads; it also says results vary by device, configuration, and use. Treat the multipliers as workload-specific commissioned claims, not predictions for every laptop or application. The October update provides that qualification.
What a useful test report should include
For readers to compare results, share the machine identity and software versions, test settings, repeated measurements where practical, and any failure or compromise. The most valuable findings are not just whether a task runs, but whether it remains fast under sustained load, fits comfortably in memory, works with the software people need, and does so without unacceptable heat, noise, or battery drain. Microsoft has called the device “the most powerful Surface Laptop ever built”; independent, reproducible tests are what will establish how that translates into real work.
