What Should You Put in an AI Assistant’s Long-Term Memory?

Save durable preferences, recurring constraints, and active goals that improve future answers. Keep secrets and exact documents elsewhere, and review memories as circumstances change.

Put information in an AI assistant’s long-term memory when it is likely to improve many future answers: stable preferences, recurring constraints, and active goals. Keep it brief, review it when circumstances change, and treat sensitive details as opt-in. Memory is for reusable context—not a secure vault or an archive for exact documents.

What belongs in long-term memory?

A useful memory saves you from repeating context and makes future help more relevant. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ, for example, gives location and dietary preferences as details that may help personalize responses. The categories below are practical examples, not a universal checklist: what is useful depends on your tasks and on the controls offered by the assistant.

  • Communication preferences: whether you prefer concise or detailed answers, a particular language, preferred units, or a format such as numbered steps.
  • Recurring constraints: dietary preferences, accessibility needs, a budget range, or location when it materially affects repeated recommendations.
  • Active goals and projects: a course of study, ongoing project, or job search. Include its current status or a point at which you should review it.
  • Reusable instructions: explicit guidance that consistently improves assistance and is safe to apply in future conversations.

Use the least detail that still helps. “Use metric units” is more durable and broadly useful than storing a long explanation of every situation in which you might need a conversion.

What should you leave out or limit?

Secrets and credentials

Do not put passwords, recovery codes, private keys, or similar credentials in conversational memory. The reviewed sources do not establish a provider-specific security guarantee for this information; the practical advice is simply not to treat assistant memory as a credential manager.

Highly sensitive details

Before retaining an intimate detail or exact identifier, ask whether a less specific version would work and whether you understand how to inspect, control, and remove the memory. A 2026 paper on privacy-aware conversational memory treats privacy as a lifecycle concern—covering how information is written, stored, retrieved, and used—not only whether it was collected. Its proposed architecture is research, not evidence that commercial assistants use the same protections. See Wang, Si, Xu, and Xu (posted August 17, 2026).

Temporary details without an end point

A one-off appointment or short-lived circumstance can become misleading if it remains in memory. If a temporary fact is useful enough to retain, give it a review date or say when it stops applying. Retire long-running goals when they are no longer active.

Exact documents and other people’s private information

Keep canonical wording, large verbatim passages, and templates in a document you control. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ says memory is intended for high-level preferences and details, not exact templates or large blocks of verbatim text. Avoid retaining private facts about other people that they would not reasonably expect to be reused; this is a conservative practice, not a universal rule established by the sources reviewed here.

Use this five-question test before saving something

  1. Reuse: Is this likely to matter in more than one future conversation?
  2. Impact: Would remembering it noticeably improve the answer?
  3. Durability: Is it likely to stay true? If not, can you add an expiry or review point?
  4. Sensitivity: Could it harm or embarrass someone if it appeared in the wrong context?
  5. Control: Can you inspect, correct, and remove the memory—and check where the information originally came from?

This is a practical decision aid, not a validated scoring system. If the likely benefit is small but the risk of exposure or staleness is meaningful, leave the detail out.

How should you review and delete memories?

Review saved context when a major circumstance changes, when an answer reveals a wrong assumption, or periodically for details that can go stale. Correct the memory or tell the assistant not to use the outdated information.

Check each place the information may exist. OpenAI’s Memory FAQ explains that deleting a chat does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory. Depending on how you used the assistant, also consider relevant files or connected apps. The FAQ says deleted-memory logs may be retained for up to 30 days for safety and debugging; that is a ChatGPT-specific statement, not a general rule for other services.

What to check when choosing a memory-enabled assistant

Memory controls differ between products, and the sources cited here do not establish a competitive ranking. Instead, check whether a service lets you:

  • See what it remembers and, where available, the source of a remembered detail.
  • Correct or delete individual items.
  • Understand whether deleting a memory also affects the original chat, files, or connected apps.
  • Limit remembered context to a project or purpose.
  • Control when sensitive information can be retrieved or used.

Availability and controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace, so check the provider’s current documentation for your account. OpenAI’s documentation says improved memory is disabled by default in regulated ChatGPT workspaces and is not covered under the BAA; it specifically says not to enter PHI when using the feature. This is a product-specific statement, not legal advice or guidance for other systems. Legal duties depend on jurisdiction, data type, and your role.

Keep memory useful, not exhaustive

Think of long-term memory as a small set of context that helps an assistant respond better across conversations. Save preferences and active constraints that earn their place through repeated use; make temporary facts reviewable; keep secrets and exact records elsewhere; and periodically inspect what remains. Privacy-aware memory design is also an active research area: the 2024 conceptual survey “Towards Ethical Personal AI Applications” discusses ethical and deployment considerations, but it is not a consumer control guide.
