Overnight irritation from pads or pull-up pants often happens when skin stays damp or in contact with urine or stool for too long, with friction adding to the problem. After leakage, gently cleanse the area, pat it dry—including skin folds—and, if suitable for the continence product, apply a skin barrier as directed. Persistent leaks, worsening soreness, broken skin, or signs of infection call for professional advice.
Why overnight incontinence products can irritate skin
Urine, stool, excess moisture, and friction can weaken or irritate skin when exposure continues. This is why a product that absorbs fluid does not remove the need for skin care: MedlinePlus notes, “Even if these products are used, the skin must still be cleaned each time after passing urine or stool.” MedlinePlus: Skin care and incontinence

Incontinence-associated dermatitis is one possible result of prolonged moisture and contact. Similar-looking rashes can have different causes, however, so appearance alone is not enough to identify the problem or choose treatment.
What to do after a leak
- Clean gently. After urine or stool reaches the skin, use a gentle cleanser that does not dry or irritate it. MedlinePlus describes mild, diluted soap and water, and also recommends soap-free cleansers that are well tolerated; Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust recommends pH-balanced cleansing. Follow the cleanser’s directions and use an option the person can tolerate. MedlinePlus · Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust
- Pat dry rather than rub. Dry the area gently, including skin folds. Scrubbing or rubbing can add friction to already irritated skin. NHS Ayrshire and Arran / Right Decisions
- Consider a compatible barrier. On clean, dry skin, a barrier cream or sealant may help protect the skin. Follow the label or a clinician’s directions; MedlinePlus advises reapplying cream or ointment after cleaning and drying. Barrier products may contain ingredients such as zinc oxide, lanolin, or petrolatum, but formulations are not interchangeable. MedlinePlus
- Check the barrier product against the continence product. Some thick or oil-based creams can reduce pad absorbency or clog the product. Check the product instructions and ask a pharmacist, clinician, or continence service what is suitable if unsure. Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust · University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
Do not make talcum or baby powder a routine substitute for cleansing and drying: talcum may reduce pad absorbency, and MedlinePlus cautions against baby powder when a yeast rash is suspected. Kent Community Health NHS Foundation Trust · MedlinePlus

Review the product if leaks or damp skin continue
Pads and pull-up pants are designed with an absorbent structure, including a hydrophobic layer intended to draw urine away from the product surface. The right product and fit depend on the person’s leakage and care needs; no one absorbency level is right for everyone. If leaks persist, ask a clinician or continence service to review fit and suitability rather than assuming a thicker cream or an extra pad will solve the problem. NHS: Products to help with urinary incontinence
- Check that the pad or pull-up fits as intended and is being used according to its instructions.
- Do not double-pad. University Hospitals of Leicester warns that layering pads can contribute to leakage and prolonged skin contact.
- Change promptly after faecal incontinence; stool left against the skin can worsen exposure.
- A washable bed pad can protect bedding during overnight leaks, but it does not treat irritated skin or replace a suitable continence product. NHS · University Hospitals of Leicester NHS Trust
When to seek medical advice
Contact a healthcare professional if skin is broken or damaged, a pressure sore is suspected, irritation is severe or getting worse, or symptoms persist despite consistent gentle care. Also seek advice if the rash may be infected or its cause is unclear. MedlinePlus describes a possible yeast rash as itchy and red, sometimes with pimple-like spots and raw-feeling skin, but those signs do not confirm a diagnosis; different conditions may need different treatment.
