A useful AI code-review prompt explains what the change is meant to do, supplies the relevant project context and conventions, names the risks to inspect, and specifies what an actionable finding should look like. Ask for evidence-based, prioritized issues—not a general opinion—and verify the results with tests, static analysis, and human review.
What to include in the prompt
1. State the change’s purpose
Tell the reviewer what the change is intended to accomplish, which requirement or issue it addresses, and what correct behavior looks like. A diff alone may show what changed without explaining why; include relevant business rules, architecture, or surrounding code needed to judge it. GitHub recommends considering the project’s purpose and architecture and consulting context such as README files, documentation, and recent pull requests in its guidance on reviewing AI-generated code.

2. Supply project conventions and exceptions
Point the reviewer to the team’s established patterns and any intentional exceptions. For GitHub Copilot code review, GitHub documents repository-wide instructions in .github/copilot-instructions.md, project context in AGENTS.md, and path-specific guidance in .github/instructions/**/*.instructions.md. Its documentation says pull-request review reads these instructions from the head branch; see GitHub’s instructions for adding repository custom instructions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsKeep stable expectations in repository guidance and put details unique to the current change—such as the feature’s intended behavior—in the review request. Google documents a similar, product-specific approach for Gemini Code Assist: a repository can use .gemini/styleguide.md, or standards can be managed centrally. The natural-language style guide expands the standard review prompt; check Gemini Code Assist’s current code-review documentation for tool-specific support.

3. Name the review dimensions that matter
Ask for checks relevant to this change rather than relying on “review this code” as the whole instruction. Useful areas include:
- Correctness, edge cases, and behavior when dependencies or inputs fail.
- Security, authorization, and sensitive-data handling.
- Missing tests, particularly for failure paths and changed behavior.
- Performance, scalability, compatibility, architecture, maintainability, or operational concerns when the change affects them.
Google’s Gemini Code Assist guidance lists correctness, efficiency, maintainability, security, testing, performance, scalability, modularity, and monitoring among review areas. GitHub’s code-review guidance offers concrete questions, including what functional tests are missing and what vulnerabilities the change could introduce. Tailor those questions to the change rather than asking for every category on every pull request.

4. Specify the shape of a useful finding
Ask the reviewer to report actionable findings with a precise file and changed-line location, the condition that triggers the issue, its likely impact, and a focused fix. Have it distinguish serious defects from non-blocking suggestions and group duplicate observations. A community-maintained GitHub generic code-review instruction example uses priority categories and project-specific checks as a starting point; adapt its format to your team rather than treating it as a universal standard.

Review the supplied diff for [change purpose or requirement] in the context of [relevant module, architecture, and business rules]. Follow [repository and path-specific conventions]; treat [intentional patterns or exceptions] as expected.
Prioritize correctness and edge cases, security and data handling, test coverage and failure paths, and any relevant compatibility, performance, or architecture risks. Do not report style preferences unless they conflict with a stated project convention or create a concrete maintenance problem.

Report only actionable findings. For each finding, include severity, file and changed-line location, the condition that triggers the issue, likely impact, and a focused fix. Group duplicates. If you find no issue, say so. Identify questions requiring human or domain judgment. Do not claim tests or tools were run unless they actually were.

This is a practical synthesis, not a vendor-prescribed universal prompt. For example, a database migration may call for reversibility and data-integrity checks; an authentication change may need explicit authorization and abuse-case checks. A small documentation edit may not need a performance review. GitHub’s generic instruction example also illustrates adding checks tied to the project.

Choose checks according to the change
Use these axes to decide which criteria deserve space in the prompt. They are a practical organizing framework, not a published scoring system.
- Impact: Could the change cause data loss, expose a security weakness, break behavior, or create only a cosmetic or readability concern?
- Scope: Is it contained within one function, or does it affect a shared library, public API, or multiple services?
- Evidence: Can the reviewer see only the diff, or also relevant tests, requirements, repository rules, architecture documentation, and comparable examples?
- Action: Should a confirmed issue block a merge, prompt a discussion, or remain an optional improvement?
Explicitly asking for the reviewer to separate severe defects from suggestions helps keep those different actions clear.
Validate the review instead of treating it as approval
An AI reviewer can miss defects, misunderstand intent, or suggest a change that does not fit the real system. Inspect each finding against the code and requirements; run appropriate tests and static analysis; and leave decisions requiring domain knowledge to a person. GitHub recommends functional checks, testing, and human oversight when reviewing AI-generated code. Neither the cited GitHub nor Google documentation establishes that a particular prompt guarantees defect detection or replaces human review.
