What Internet Speed Do You Need for a Smooth Video Call?

Smooth video calls depend on the app, call size, video quality, upload and download capacity, and Wi-Fi conditions. Compare official Zoom, Teams, and Meet guidance and follow practical troubleshooting steps.

There is no single internet-speed number that guarantees a smooth video call. The right target depends on the app, whether you are calling one person or a group, the video quality, screen sharing, and other devices using your connection. Check both upload and download speed, then use your video platform’s published figures as a starting point.

If your speed test looks adequate but a call still stutters, bandwidth may not be the problem: Wi-Fi quality, packet loss, latency, or the other participant’s connection can also affect the call.

Video-call speed recommendations by platform

The figures below are platform-specific guidance, not universal internet-plan requirements. Zoom, Teams, and Google Meet describe different call scenarios and quality modes, so their numbers are not directly interchangeable. The linked provider pages do not state a publication year; the figures are presented as published there, without assigning them a year.

Platform and scenario Published bandwidth guidance
Zoom, 720p one-to-one 1.2 Mbps upload and 1.2 Mbps download (Zoom Support)
Zoom, 720p group call 2.6 Mbps upload and 1.8 Mbps download (Zoom Support)
Zoom, 1080p one-to-one or group call 3.8 Mbps to send video and 3.0 Mbps to receive it (Zoom Support)
Microsoft Teams, one-to-one video Minimum: 150 kbps each way; recommended: 1,500 kbps each way; best performance: 4,000 kbps each way (Microsoft Learn)
Microsoft Teams, meetings Minimum: 150 kbps upload and 200 kbps download; recommended: 2,500 kbps upload and 4,000 kbps download; best performance: 4,000 kbps each way (Microsoft Learn)
Google Meet, individual 720p video Up to 1.7 Mbps outbound and 1.7 Mbps inbound (Google Workspace Help)
Google Meet, individual 1080p video Up to 3.6 Mbps outbound and 3.6 Mbps inbound (Google Workspace Help)
Google Meet, group meeting At least 250 kbps outbound; inbound can be up to 4.0 Mbps, depending on the resolution you send (Google Workspace Help)

How to use the numbers for your connection

Compare upload and download separately

Upload speed carries your camera video and shared content to other people. Download speed carries their video and audio to you. A plan or test result with a strong download figure but a weak upload figure can therefore still struggle when you turn on your camera or share your screen. Microsoft advises checking both directions against the speed promised by your internet service provider (Microsoft Support).

Allow for the call type and competing use

Group calls and higher-definition video can demand more bandwidth than a one-to-one call. For example, Zoom’s published 720p group-call recommendation exceeds its one-to-one figure, and its 1080p figures are higher still. The comparison is specific to Zoom’s published scenarios, not a rule that can be applied unchanged to every app.

Screen sharing, participant count, meeting layout, and frame rate can also affect actual usage. Microsoft says Teams usage varies with layout, resolution, and frame rate; Google says Meet usage varies with participant count, layout, and screen sharing. When bandwidth is insufficient, Teams prioritizes audio over video, while Meet may lower video definition (Microsoft Learn; Google Workspace Help).

  1. Measure both directions during typical use. Run a speed test while the connection is in the conditions where problems occur. Record upload and download results and compare each with the speed your ISP promises (Microsoft Support).
  2. Look at the app’s call-health information. In Teams, Microsoft identifies round-trip time below 200 ms and received packet loss below 2% as typical measures for call quality. These are diagnostic metrics, not substitutes for enough throughput (Microsoft Support).
  3. Improve the local Wi-Fi link. Move closer to the router, reduce walls and sources of interference, and place the router centrally. These steps address a weak or disrupted wireless connection, not insufficient ISP service speed (Microsoft Support).
  4. Check whether the issue is limited to one call or contact. If it is, the other participant’s connection may be responsible; your own speed test cannot rule that out (Microsoft Support).
  5. Escalate based on what the checks show. If results repeatedly fall below the promised ISP speed, contact the provider. If local Wi-Fi remains the problem after placement and interference changes, Microsoft says a newer router or network adapter may be worth considering (Microsoft Support).

Why a fast internet plan may not be enough

A plan’s advertised speed does not show whether the device receives a stable signal in the room where you call, nor does it describe packet loss or latency during a particular meeting. Troubleshooting the call’s actual conditions helps distinguish a throughput shortfall from a local Wi-Fi problem or an issue on the far end of the call.
