What Should Parents Ask When Comparing School Behaviour Policies?

Ask for each school’s current behaviour policy, then compare how staff apply it, support pupils with additional needs and keep families informed.

Ask each school for its current written behaviour policy, then use the same questions to find out how staff apply it in practice, support children who struggle, and communicate with families. A policy’s wording alone cannot show how consistently it is used or whether it fits your child. The legal details below apply to England; rules and procedures may differ elsewhere.

Start with the written policy and the everyday rules

In England, schools must publish a behaviour policy setting out rules and expectations, what happens when pupils misbehave, and how bullying is prevented. Parents can ask the school for a copy. Ask both where to read it now and where to find the current version later; a school’s published policy is a more reliable reference than an informal summary.

  • Can I have the current written behaviour policy, and where will I find it later?
  • What are the main expectations in lessons, corridors, at lunch, on trips and online?
  • How are expectations explained to new pupils and reinforced during the year?
  • How does the school address bullying and behaviour outside school that affects pupils or the school environment?

Ask for examples of how the rules work in ordinary situations. For instance, a policy may set out expectations for a lesson but leave unclear how staff respond to a first interruption, repeated disruption or an incident involving another pupil. Specific examples can make that gap visible.

Ask what happens after behaviour concerns

Behaviour policies may describe recognition and encouragement as well as correction and sanctions. The Department for Education’s parent guide lists positive approaches such as praise, contact with parents, certificates, responsibilities and group rewards. It also gives examples of responses to misbehaviour, including a verbal reminder, a written task, loss of privileges, detention or a school-based job. These are examples, not a required sequence: schools do not all use every measure or apply them in the same order.

  • Can you give an example of how the written policy was applied in an ordinary situation?

For serious cases, ask how the school distinguishes its everyday responses from formal action. In England, more serious behaviour can lead to suspension or permanent exclusion, which have separate formal procedures. A school should be able to explain what families are told and what support follows.

Find out how the school responds to individual needs

If a child repeatedly struggles with expectations, ask how the school tries to understand the reasons and what support it considers. England guidance names special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), as well as mental and physical health needs. It says schools should work with parents to understand why a pupil is having difficulty and consider appropriate support. It also says a school should consider whether SEND contributed to the behaviour and whether a sanction is fair and lawful. That does not mean needs automatically excuse behaviour or that they can be ignored when deciding how to respond.

  • How does the school take account of SEND, disability or health needs when applying the policy?
  • If a child has an education, health and care (EHC) plan, who will speak with the family when concerns arise?

Listen for a clear route from concern to conversation and support: who notices a pattern, who contacts the family, and who is responsible for discussing next steps. The Department for Education says: “Your child’s school should work with you to provide your child with the right support at the right time and keep you updated about your child’s behaviour.” (Department for Education parent guide, published 25 May 2023.)

Compare communication and procedures for serious incidents

  • How and when will the school contact parents about behaviour, including positive updates?
  • Who should you contact first with a question or concern, and how can you raise a complaint or challenge a decision?
  • If a pupil is suspended, what written explanation will the family receive, and how can a decision be reviewed?
  • How does the school plan support when the pupil returns after suspension?

In England, a formal suspension is followed by written information explaining its length and reason, and parents have routes to challenge the decision. A school cannot use an informal instruction to go home “to cool off” as a substitute for the formal process. These details are England-specific; confirm the current procedure and local rules where you live.

Check rules that may vary between schools

Mobile-phone rules are school-specific. Ask when phones are restricted, which parts of the school day are covered and how exceptions are handled. Also ask how the school deals with threatening or harmful online behaviour that affects another pupil or the school environment; England guidance says schools may sanction some such behaviour.

Compare schools on the same questions

Rather than ranking a school by a label such as “strict” or “nurturing,” compare what each policy explains and what staff can describe. Use the same core questions at each school so the answers are easier to assess side by side.

What to compare What to look for
Clarity Expectations and possible responses are understandable in the written policy.
Range The policy covers positive recognition, everyday correction, serious incidents and bullying.
Support It explains how staff respond to recurring difficulties and take individual needs into account.
Communication Families can see how they will be informed and how to raise concerns.
Application Staff can explain how the policy works in specific situations, including discretion and review.

Government guidance explains policy content and procedures, but it does not establish one best behaviour-policy style or show that a particular sanction model produces better outcomes. The Department for Education’s general behaviour guidance applies to several types of school in England and was last updated 19 February 2024; its parent guide was published 25 May 2023 and applies from 1 September 2023. For suspension and permanent exclusion procedures, check the current England guidance, whose landing page reports an update effective 26 July 2026.
