A useful wildfire evacuation plan answers four questions before smoke or an alert creates pressure: where will everyone go, how will they get there, how will separated family members reconnect, and what must leave with them? Write down the answers, prepare carryable go-bags, and practice the plan. During an emergency, follow local officials’ current instructions; routes, alerts, and shelter availability can change quickly.
Choose where to go and how to get there
Pick a meeting place outside the hazard area, a primary destination, and a backup destination. Make sure household members know the addresses and how to reach them. A destination could be with family or friends, or an available shelter; check official local information rather than assuming a particular shelter will be open or accept pets.

Identify more than one route from home and from places family members regularly spend time. USFA advises having alternate routes in case a road is closed or threatened, and Ready.gov recommends driving evacuation routes and identifying shelter locations. When it is safe to do so, practice the routes and keep a paper map or written directions with the plan in case phones or network services fail. See the USFA evacuation checklist and Ready.gov wildfire guidance.
Plan for alerts, separation, and assistance
Record the local government alert system and the official channels that issue evacuation instructions. Choose an out-of-area contact who can relay messages if household members cannot reach one another directly. Agree on a meeting place and a simple way to check in as safe, and put key phone numbers on paper as well as in phones. Keep a battery-powered radio and a phone-charging method available; do not depend on one device or one route. USFA and the Red Cross provide additional guidance on wildfire evacuation planning and wildfire safety checklists.

Assign practical roles, such as who gathers children or helps load the vehicle, without making departure depend on one person being present. Plan transport and assistance for children, older adults, people with disabilities, anyone with medical equipment or medication needs, and household members who may be at work or school. USFA specifically recommends planning to evacuate family, friends, or neighbors with disabilities; coordinate ahead of time so everyone knows who is helping and where to meet.
Include pets and other animals
Plan animal transport and destinations before an evacuation. Keep pet carriers accessible, and decide where animals can stay along the route; do not assume every shelter or lodging option accepts them. Pack food, water, medications, identification, and relevant records. A recent photo can help identify a pet if you become separated. Practice loading pets when possible. Make separate transport and destination arrangements for livestock or other large animals.

USFA describes planning food and water for up to 72 hours, while the Red Cross describes a carryable Go-Kit with three days of supplies.
