What should I consider when buying a computer monitor?
ENERGY STAR’s official monitor buying guidance offers a useful starting point: “A monitor’s resolution refers to the number of picture elements, or pixels, that make up an image.” In practice, screen size and resolution work together: the right combination depends on how much detail and usable workspace you want, and how much room your desk provides.

Screen size, desk space, and work
ENERGY STAR describes 24 inches as a useful baseline for affordability and quality. That is guidance, not a rule: a larger screen may suit gaming, streaming, or other uses, provided it fits your desk and viewing position. Measure the space available and consider how far you sit from the display before settling on a size.
Resolution and workspace
ENERGY STAR describes 1920 × 1080 (1080p) as common and suitable for 21- to 24-inch monitors. Larger displays may benefit from higher resolution. More pixels can provide extra workspace for multitasking and make photos and movies look sharper. Choose based on the content and work you do, rather than assuming that the highest available resolution is necessary.

Refresh rate and motion
ENERGY STAR identifies 60 Hz as standard. A faster refresh rate can make motion, including scrolling, look smoother, but that does not make it a worthwhile upgrade for every user. Consider whether smoother motion matters for your tasks before paying more for a higher rate.

Check the connections and their capabilities
Compare the monitor’s inputs with the outputs available on your computer. A USB-C or Thunderbolt connection may carry both video and charging through one cable, but the monitor and computer must support the specific features you intend to use. Check both devices’ specifications; the connector’s shape alone does not confirm that it can deliver display and charging.
Check adjustment and viewing position
Look for height and tilt adjustment that lets you position the screen comfortably. If the monitor does not offer the adjustment your setup requires, account for that before choosing it. For a typical seated viewer, viewing angle may be less important; it can matter more when several people watch the display together.

Which screen finish and brightness suit the room?
Consider where light falls in your workspace. A matte finish can work better in challenging lighting, such as a screen positioned opposite a large window. Glossy finishes can reflect the surroundings. Brightness also matters in a bright room, so assess the lighting where you will actually use the monitor rather than choosing from specifications in isolation.
How should I compare warranty, pixels, and energy use?
Warranty and defective-pixel policy
Check the warranty terms and the manufacturer’s defective-pixel policy before buying. These are separate considerations: confirm what the warranty covers and what the policy says about pixels that do not function as expected.
Energy performance and ENERGY STAR
ENERGY STAR certification evaluates a monitor’s total energy consumption in On and Sleep modes. The criteria vary by area and resolution, so certification is an energy-efficiency reference rather than a measure of image quality or a guarantee of a particular bill saving. ENERGY STAR’s monitor criteria page says Version 8.0 took effect January 28, 2020; use current certification information when comparing products.

Do not rely on advertised contrast ratios alone
ENERGY STAR cautions that advertised contrast ratios are not reliable for direct comparison because manufacturers do not measure them uniformly. Treat the figure cautiously instead of using it as a decisive ranking.

Decide whether the standard 60 Hz refresh rate suits your use or whether smoother motion matters to you.

There is no universal best monitor for every setup. A strong shortlist is one that satisfies your actual requirements across these factors, rather than winning on one specification alone.
