That does not mean a todo app—or any personal project—is an automatic rejection. The useful question is whether you can make your engineering decisions and impact clear.
What “senior” means in the employer examples
There is no single senior-engineer rubric that applies to every company. Public role materials from Amazon and Google offer concrete examples, but they describe those employers’ expectations—not a universal hiring standard.

Amazon SDE III
Amazon characterizes SDE III as a team-leadership role involving advice on technical and business issues, responsibility for multiple high-performance and stable systems, and a system-wide architectural perspective. Its role guidance describes code as secure, maintainable, scalable, and extensible. For system design, it names practicality, accuracy, efficiency, reliability, optimization, and scalability as goals. Amazon’s SDE III interview preparation page provides the employer’s own description.
Google Senior Software Engineer, Core
A Google Careers posting for Senior Software Engineer, Core lists writing and testing code, participating in or leading design reviews, reviewing code, and contributing to documentation among its responsibilities. The posting’s minimum qualifications include five years of software development experience, three years testing, maintaining, or launching software products, and one year of software design and architecture experience; one year of technical leadership is listed as preferred. These are qualifications for that specific role, not a general definition of seniority. See Google Careers listings for the posting and current details.

What senior interviews may evaluate
Interview formats depend on the employer and role. Amazon’s SDE III guidance names coding, system design, and Leadership Principles evaluation. Its preparation material says candidates should expect discussion of what they did, how they did it, and why they made particular decisions; it also advises using detailed examples from previous jobs and the STAR approach for behavioral questions. In coding, its guidance emphasizes syntactically correct, scalable, robust, well-tested code and checking edge cases. Amazon’s published guidance is the basis for these specifics; do not assume every company uses the same stages or criteria.
For candidates, the practical implication is to prepare both implementation detail and context: explain the constraints, alternatives, tradeoffs, testing, and consequences behind a decision. A polished solution alone may not show how you approach a system-wide problem or work with others.

How to make project evidence useful
The available employer materials do not establish that hiring managers universally prefer professional experience over portfolio projects, or that they reject generic apps. A personal project can still be a useful way to demonstrate engineering judgment if you explain the substance behind it. Treat this as practical preparation, not a guaranteed hiring rule.
- State the problem and constraints. Explain who the work was for, what it needed to do, and what limits shaped your choices.
- Make your contribution specific. Distinguish your work from collaborators’ contributions and identify the decisions you owned.
- Explain tradeoffs. Show why you selected an approach, what alternatives you considered, and what you would change under different constraints.
- Show engineering discipline. Describe testing, edge cases, failure handling, maintainability, security, reliability, or scalability where relevant.
- Connect work to outcomes. Share credible results you can substantiate, such as a shipped feature, a resolved operational problem, or feedback from users. Do not imply impact you cannot verify.
A small app can support a strong discussion when it exposes real decisions; a large project can be unpersuasive if its purpose, your role, and its tradeoffs are unclear. There is no evidence here that interviewers will clone or deeply inspect every repository, so make the explanation useful even if someone only reviews its summary or asks you about it.

Communication and collaboration are part of the evidence
Role descriptions make collaboration visible: Google’s Core posting includes design reviews with peers and stakeholders, code review, testing, delivery, and technical leadership. Amazon’s SDE III description also frames the role around team leadership and technical and business advice.
Practitioner comments offer additional perspectives, though they are not a representative survey of hiring managers. In a February 2025 hiring guide, Raffael Nagel, identified there as a Staff Engineer at Geico and formerly a Senior Software Engineer at Meta, said candidates need to be comfortable with common coding structures. Stefan Butlin, CEO of Testpad, emphasized investigating why something fails and why a fix works. Steve Rector, a Software Engineer at GXM Consulting and formerly Director of Solutions at Datadog, highlighted listening, asking questions, responding to hints, and explaining reasoning. These views support a useful interview habit: narrate your thinking, listen closely, and clarify the problem rather than silently guessing what the interviewer wants. The hiring guide attributes those comments to the named practitioners.

A September 2026 preprint by Vitalii Romaniuk reports retrospective survey results from 911 software-engineering community respondents. For its 2023–2026 period, labeled Era IV, the sample’s mean reported live-interview duration was 5.47 hours and the mean reported number of rounds was 4.64. These are sample retrospections, not universal figures for current interviews. Respondents were recruited through software-engineering communities, and the paper says its results do not establish causality or an archival history of the wider population.

The paper also analyzed public interview-preparation prompts: of 945 retained prompts, it reports 43.4% received the closest-to-routine-work score and 37.1% the next-closest score. Its prompt benchmark is not tied to one company, technology stack, seniority level, or job description. It therefore cannot establish what senior hiring managers specifically require. Read the preprint for its methods and qualifications.

A focused preparation checklist
For each role, use the employer’s own job description and interview information to decide what evidence to prepare. A useful comparison framework is:
- Scope: Did you own a feature, a system, or work spanning teams?
- Technical judgment: Can you discuss correctness, maintainability, reliability, security, scalability, and tradeoffs relevant to the work?
- Delivery: Can you explain design, implementation, testing, launch, and maintenance, along with outcomes you can support?
- Leadership and collaboration: What examples show technical guidance, reviews, mentoring, stakeholder communication, or constructive response to feedback?
- Interview format: Which exercises does this specific employer name—coding, system design, behavioral examples, or something else?
Build or polish a project if it gives you a credible way to demonstrate these points. Do not assume that adding another familiar app will substitute for clear evidence of your own judgment, ownership, and results.
