Choose hosted logging when you want failure signals without taking on another system to operate; consider self-hosting when you already run the required components and can account for the engineering time. Neither option is automatically cheaper: compare the same log volume, retention period, query workload, and investigation needs.
What you are choosing between
Hosted logging sends your application’s logs to a provider that operates the collection and storage service. You configure a source, send it logs, and use the provider’s tools to search and investigate them. This shifts much of the infrastructure work away from your team, while the bill depends on the provider’s plan and usage.

Grafana’s self-managed open-source option must be installed, administered, and maintained by the user. Loki is Grafana’s open-source log aggregation system; its project documentation describes it as “Like Prometheus, but for logs.” That control comes with operating responsibilities, not a guarantee of lower total cost.
What hosted logging may cost
Two providers illustrate why headline prices are not enough. The figures below come from vendor pricing pages accessed in 2026; they are examples of the pages’ published terms, not quotes or guaranteed bills. Check the current pages and your exact plan, region, and configuration before buying.

The units differ: one page presents an ingestion rate and a retention rate, while the other lists an included monthly ingestion allowance and retention period, plus Pro pricing. Do not compare the per-GB figures in isolation. The vendor pages do not establish what either service would cost for your particular application.
How to compare the real monthly cost
Build one workload estimate and apply it to each option. Use observed volumes if you have them; otherwise, label estimates as estimates and revisit them after collecting real usage data.

- Estimate monthly ingestion. Count the logs you expect to send, not just the size of your application or server fleet.
- Set a retention target. Decide how many days you need logs available to investigate delayed reports, recurring failures, or incidents discovered after they happen.
- Describe query use. Note how often developers search, how broad those searches are, and whether they need to correlate a failure with nearby logs, metrics, or traces. Providers may meter different kinds of usage differently; Grafana Cloud documentation describes logs as metered per GB.
- Estimate hosted charges. Apply the current plan’s included usage, ingestion or write charges, retention charges, and any platform fee to your workload. Check whether a free allowance covers your expected volume and retention together.
- Estimate self-hosted operating costs. Include compute, storage, backups, retention, upgrades, monitoring, and engineering time. Loki documentation describes compressed log chunks and indexes, with storage options including object storage such as S3 or GCS and local filesystem storage; your actual bill depends on the deployment and workload.
- Compare the investigation workflow. A low-cost system that makes it difficult to find the relevant failure signal may not meet the team’s needs. Include the time developers spend getting useful answers from it.
There is no universal self-hosted bill in the project documentation. Use your own infrastructure prices and workload assumptions rather than treating open-source software as cost-free to run.
When hosted is the better fit
Hosted logging is a practical choice when the team prioritizes having a usable search and alerting workflow without taking responsibility for the backend’s installation and maintenance. Better Stack’s getting-started documentation describes creating a source for a service that generates logs, such as an application or web server, and connecting it with a source token. Its documented features include centralized collection, live tail, SQL queries, dashboards, and alerts.

Grafana Cloud Logs is the managed Loki option: Grafana describes it as fully managed and powered by Loki OSS. Consider it if you want that log aggregation approach without operating the backend yourself. In either case, verify that the service’s retention, data location, integrations, and current price suit your requirements; do not infer compliance characteristics from the fact that a service is hosted.
When self-hosting Loki is worth evaluating
Self-hosting may be worth evaluating if the team already operates Grafana-compatible components, needs to control where it deploys the stack, and can assign ongoing ownership. Loki’s documented stack combines Alloy for collection, Loki for storage and queries, and Grafana for visualization. Its label-based indexing indexes metadata labels for log streams rather than the full text of each log entry, while compressed chunks hold log data.

- Plan for operations. Assign responsibility for deployment, upgrades, backups, monitoring, storage, retention, and troubleshooting.
- Choose storage deliberately. Loki documents object storage options including S3 and GCS, as well as local filesystem storage. The documentation does not establish which option will be cheapest for a particular SaaS.
- Budget engineering time. A small infrastructure bill can still make self-hosting expensive if maintaining the stack takes time away from product work.
- Check the end-to-end path. The collector must receive the application’s logs and deliver them to the backend; the interface must let the team find and interpret the failure.
Open-source software changes who operates the system and how you pay for it; it does not remove the need for storage, compute, backups, or maintenance.

Application logs are timestamped records emitted by your software. Error tracking focuses on captured exceptions and their context; distributed traces follow a request across services. These signals can complement one another, but they are not interchangeable. Decide which investigation questions you need to answer before adding products or sending every telemetry type through a log budget.

Collectors affect how data reaches a backend, not who operates that backend. Better Stack documents an open-source Apache 2.0 collector bundle that includes OpenTelemetry, Vector, OBI, and Prometheus exporters, with deployment integrations such as Docker and Kubernetes. Using a collector does not make the hosted logging service self-hosted.

A small-team decision rule
- Start with hosted if you need failure searches and alerts but have little time to operate infrastructure. Measure actual usage and check the price against your retention needs.
- Evaluate self-hosted Loki if you already have the operating skills and components, have a reason to control deployment, and can include maintenance time in the cost.
- Reassess with evidence when real ingestion, retention, and query patterns become clear. Recalculate using current provider terms and your own infrastructure costs rather than extrapolating from an introductory allowance.
