Before buying Bharat Heavy Electricals Limited (BHEL) shares, investors should test whether its large order book can turn into profitable execution and timely cash collection. BHEL is an Indian engineering and manufacturing company; the operating and financial figures below are in Indian rupees and relate to India unless noted otherwise. Its multiyear projects, staged payments, receivables, exposure to input costs and policy-linked demand all matter. A large order book is not the same as realized earnings or cash, and the information here does not establish whether the shares are fairly valued.
What do BHEL’s latest operating figures show—and what don’t they show?
In an April 17, 2026 release, BHEL reported FY2025–26 turnover of about ₹32,350 crore, up 18% year over year, as provisional and unaudited. The release also gave approximate order inflows of ₹75,000 crore, an outstanding order book of about ₹2.4 lakh crore at year-end, and around 8.9 GW of power capacity commissioned or synchronised. These are useful measures of activity and workload, not proof that every order will be completed on schedule, earn an attractive margin or be paid for on time. BHEL’s FY2025–26 operating release

For investors, the useful question is how those indicators move together over several reporting periods: order-book conversion into revenue, project milestones and commissioning, operating margins, and operating cash flow. A rising order book without corresponding execution or cash conversion deserves closer examination.
Can long projects delay earnings and cash?
BHEL’s FY2024–25 annual report says project duration generally ranges from three to five years. Payments are realized in stages under contract terms, which can include advances, progress and milestone payments, and retention released on completion. A booked project can therefore take years to complete, and cash may arrive in installments rather than when the order is announced. BHEL’s FY2024–25 financial-risk note

Execution issues to monitor
Customer readiness, site conditions, supply availability, project coordination and the achievement of contractual milestones can affect delivery. Also check whether contracts allow price escalation and whether cost increases can be recovered. Changes in materials, labour, logistics or subcontracting can affect project economics between award and delivery, but the cited disclosures do not quantify a current cost-escalation or margin trend. Review the latest audited disclosures and contract terms before drawing conclusions about either.
Are receivables and working capital keeping pace with growth?
Billing, accounting revenue and cash collection are different steps. Staged billing, retention and late customer payments can leave money tied up while BHEL continues to fund project work. Its FY2024–25 annual report reported net trade receivables of ₹8,931 crore at March 31, 2025, compared with ₹8,010 crore at March 31, 2024, and attributed the increase primarily to increased operations. That historical increase alone does not establish deteriorating credit quality. Check newer audited balances, aging, provisions and operating cash flow to assess the current position. The same annual report says government-sector customers made up 80% of total receivables and describes credit risk as relatively low in that context. That is BHEL’s assessment; it does not remove the possibility of delayed collections or the cash-flow pressure those delays can create. BHEL’s FY2024–25 financial-risk note
A disclosed example of customer and geopolitical exposure
A Q1 FY2026–27 consolidated filing excerpt reports ₹196 crore overdue from STPG, formerly NEC Sudan. BHEL said the amount was held up by the crisis in Sudan and considered it good. This illustrates how customer circumstances and geopolitical events can affect collection even when the company has not classified an amount as doubtful. It is a specific disclosed exposure, not evidence that the rest of BHEL’s receivables face the same circumstances or that this amount is a material impairment to the company as a whole. How much does demand depend on policy and tenders?
BHEL’s FY2024–25 management discussion describes opportunities linked to thermal power, including government plans for additional coal-based capacity, as well as possible work in hydro, nuclear and power transmission associated with renewable energy. These are management’s descriptions of market opportunities, not confirmed orders or guaranteed profits. Demand still depends on policy choices, tender awards, customer funding and successful execution. Track actual orders secured and their delivery economics rather than treating a sector plan as BHEL revenue. BHEL’s FY2024–25 management discussion
What should investors check in BHEL’s risk controls?
BHEL’s FY2024–25 financial-risk note identifies credit, liquidity and market risks and describes a Board-approved Risk Management Charter and Policy with a three-layer framework. A stated framework is relevant context, but it cannot guarantee that projects will avoid delays, customers will pay promptly or losses will not occur. Investors should look at reported outcomes—especially collection, cash flow, margins and liquidity—alongside the policy description. BHEL’s FY2024–25 financial-risk note

How should investors assess the shares’ price?
Business performance and investment value are separate questions: even a sound business can be unattractive at a price that assumes too much, while a low price may reflect real uncertainty. No current share price, valuation multiple, peer comparison or investor-specific time horizon is established here, so these facts do not support a buy-or-sell verdict.
