How to Free Up Storage on a TECNO, Infinix, or itel Phone Without Losing Important Files

Start with Settings > Storage to see what is taking up space. Then review downloads, clear an app’s cache rather than its data, and make sure important files are safely copied or backed up before removing them. Menu names and available features vary by phone model and Android version, so check your device’s manual if a path differs.

1. Check what is using storage

  1. Open Settings > Storage. If you do not see Storage, search for “Storage” in Settings.
  2. Review the categories, such as apps, images and videos, and downloads. Start with the largest category so you can make a deliberate choice about what to review.
  3. Do not delete a vaguely named “Other” or “System” category. The label alone does not tell you what will be removed.

Android instructions and menu labels can differ by version and manufacturer interface. Google’s Android storage guidance notes that some steps apply only to Android 14 or later.

2. Clear app cache—not app storage or data

Cache is temporary app data. Clearing it may free some space, though the app can load more slowly the next time you open it while it rebuilds that temporary data. Clearing storage or data is different: it removes the app’s local data and may sign you out or erase information stored only on the phone.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. In Settings, open the app’s information page. Depending on the phone, this may be under Apps or Apps > App management.
  2. Choose the app taking up space, then look for Storage or Storage & cache.
  3. Select Clear cache only if you want to remove temporary files. Avoid Clear storage, Clear data, or an equivalent reset unless you have checked what the app stores locally and intend to remove it.

For app-specific instructions, see Google’s guide to freeing space on Android.

3. Review downloads and large files before deleting

Downloads and large-file suggestions can include items you still need. Open the folder or suggestion, inspect each file, and remove only items you recognize and can replace or no longer need. Sending a file to Trash or accepting a cleanup suggestion still removes it; it does not create a backup.

  • If you do not need the file: delete it after checking its name and contents.
  • If you might need it: copy it to a computer or another supported destination first. Open the copied file to confirm it works before removing the phone copy.
  • If you are unsure: leave it in place until you can identify it.

Google documents transferring files between an Android device and a computer over USB in its file-transfer instructions.

4. Protect photos and videos before freeing space

For photos or videos, confirm that backup has completed in the account or service you intend to use before removing local copies. Google says backed-up Google Photos items can be removed from the device; check the backup status in the app before using its device-space cleanup option.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Open the backup app and confirm it is using the intended account.
  2. Check that the items you want to keep have finished backing up. Do not assume that selecting backup means every file has uploaded.
  3. Only then remove the device copies, using the app’s documented cleanup option or another method you understand.

A cloud copy may require access to the right account and an internet connection. Backup and restore coverage varies by device, Android version, and app, and not every app restores all of its settings or data. Google’s Android backup and restore guide reports 15 GB of no-charge Google-account storage in the guide retrieved in 2026; that is account storage, not space added to the phone, and the available allowance can change.

5. Use a microSD card only if your model supports it

A compatible microSD card can provide another place for files, but card support and supported uses vary by phone model. Check your exact model’s documentation before buying or moving anything. A card is not a backup if it is the only copy of a file.

  • Copy files to the card only after confirming the phone supports the card and the intended file use.
  • Keep another copy of important files, such as on a computer or in a verified cloud backup.
  • Do not format a card until you have copied off anything you need: formatting erases its contents.

Infinix and itel support pages describe storage or backup options, but they do not establish compatibility for every model or app. Check the documentation for your own phone: Infinix support FAQ, itel support FAQ, and itel storage and formatting guidance.

6. Avoid factory reset as a storage-cleanup shortcut

A factory reset is not routine cleanup: it can remove personal files and app data from internal storage. Infinix’s FAQ advises backing up important files in connection with reset guidance, and itel warns that erasing internal storage removes personal files. Use a reset only when you deliberately want to erase and set up the phone again—not simply to make room.

Which cleanup option is safest?

Action What happens Before you proceed
Clear app cache Removes temporary app files; the app may load more slowly at first afterward. Choose Clear cache, not Clear storage or Clear data.
Clear app storage or data Removes the app’s local data. Check the app and confirm you intend to lose its locally stored information.
Delete a download or large file Removes that file from the phone, or moves it to Trash if that is the chosen action. Identify it first; copy and verify it elsewhere if you need to keep it.
Remove a backed-up photo or video copy Removes the local copy; access to the backed-up copy depends on the account and service. Confirm the backup completed in the intended account.
Move files to a microSD card Stores files on removable media if the phone supports the card and use. Verify model compatibility and keep a separate copy of important files.
Factory reset Can erase personal files and app data from internal storage. Do not use as routine cleanup; back up what you intend to keep first.
