1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIn a working AI agent, retain means selecting information and saving it beyond the current model call; recall means retrieving relevant saved information into the context for a later step. Saving a transcript is persistence, not necessarily useful memory: a system still has to decide what to keep, where to keep it, and what to load again.
Retain and recall are different stages
An agent can retain a complete conversation, a concise summary, structured facts, or lessons from earlier work. Those records are not interchangeable. Full history supports continuity; a compact profile or procedural note may be easier to reuse; an episodic record can capture what happened during a prior task.

Recall is the act of bringing some of that retained material back when a later task needs it. Depending on the design, the agent may replay a whole session, load thread state, inject a short summary, search an index, or access a memory store through a tool. The useful question is not simply whether data survived, but whether relevant information is available at the right time and at an appropriate level of detail.
What the lifecycle looks like in practice
1. Keep working state for the current task
During a task, an agent may need the current exchange plus intermediate data such as tool results, decisions, or unfinished work. LangGraph describes short-term memory as thread-scoped state: a step reads the state and persists it through thread-scoped checkpoints. This helps continue work in that thread, but does not by itself make information available across unrelated threads. LangGraph memory concepts

2. Save history or derive candidate memories
At a run boundary, an application can preserve conversation history for later continuity. In the OpenAI Agents SDK, a session retrieves and prepends prior conversation history before a run, then stores new run items—including user input, assistant output, and tool calls—afterward. Documented session backends include SQLite variants, Redis, MongoDB, hosted Conversations storage, and other adapters. OpenAI Agents SDK sessions
A different pattern derives reusable notes rather than replaying every exchange. OpenAI’s documented sandbox-memory approach appends run segments to conversation files, extracts a summary and compact raw memories, then consolidates them into an index and summary. That is one implementation, not a required standard for agents. OpenAI Agents SDK agent memory

3. Recall only what the next step needs
One documented sandbox pattern injects a short summary first, searches a memory index when prior work appears relevant, and opens detailed summaries only as needed. This progressive-disclosure approach avoids loading every stored detail on every call. Other systems may replay a session or load state directly; the cited implementations do not establish a universally best retrieval algorithm or a cross-platform cost benchmark.

4. Correct or remove outdated information
Retained information can become stale or misleading. OpenAI’s sandbox-memory documentation treats memories as guidance rather than ground truth, says to trust the current environment, and supports updating stale memory. Anthropic documents immutable memory versions, providing an audit trail and point-in-time recovery. These are different product controls, not features to assume in every memory system.
Memory scope is an architectural decision
A design should specify who or what a memory belongs to. It might last only for one turn, persist for a thread or session, follow a user across sessions, or be shared within a project or workspace. The scope determines both its usefulness and the risk of exposing one person’s or task’s information to another.

LangGraph distinguishes thread-scoped short-term state from long-term memory accessed across threads through namespaces. Anthropic describes stores scoped to a workspace and attached to sessions. As LangChain’s LangGraph documentation puts it, “Long-term memory is a complex challenge without a one-size-fits-all solution.” LangGraph memory concepts Anthropic: Using agent memory

Common memory representations and retrieval patterns
| Pattern | What is retained or recalled | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Conversation history | Messages and, in the OpenAI Agents SDK session pattern, run items such as tool calls | Supports conversational continuity; can carry much more material than a concise reusable note. |
| Summary or profile | A compressed account of context or user-relevant facts | Smaller to load, but compression can omit detail or preserve an outdated interpretation. |
| Episodic memory | Records of prior actions or experiences | Can help an agent use lessons from previous tasks; LangGraph names episodic memory as a category. |
| Procedural memory | Instructions or methods for how to perform work | Differs from remembering facts about a user or a past event; LangGraph names procedural memory as a category. |
| Indexed or store-backed memory | Documents or compact records fetched by search or through a store | Allows selective access instead of automatically adding every record to the prompt. |
These categories can coexist. A system might retain session history for a thread, extract a procedural note after a task, and search a workspace store only when a later request makes that note relevant.

Choose a design by asking these questions
- Scope: Does the information belong to one turn, a thread, a user, a project, or an application?
- Representation: Is the future task best served by full messages, a summary, structured facts, a record of prior actions, or reusable instructions?
- Recall path: Will the system replay history, load step state, search by keywords or meaning, or retrieve through a tool? The cited documentation supports several patterns, not a single best algorithm.
- Update timing: Should a note be saved during the user-facing run, or extracted and consolidated later?
- Correction and forgetting: Can someone edit, version, archive, or delete a memory, and can its origin be traced?
- Persistence and access: Which backend stores the information, which agents or sessions can share it, and how are users, tenants, and backups protected?
- Context budget: What must be loaded on every call, and what can be fetched only when useful?
Storage does not grant permission to access memory
A session identifier is a selector for conversation history, not proof of identity or authorization. OpenAI’s session documentation explicitly warns that applications must enforce access controls around sessions, databases, and backups. A robust design checks that the current user is allowed to access the selected session or memory store before retrieving its contents. OpenAI Agents SDK sessions
Product-specific limits are not measures of memory quality
Anthropic’s current Managed Agents documentation, accessed October 4, 2026, states that an individual memory is capped at 100 kB (about 25,000 tokens) and a store holds at most 10,000 memories. These are limits for that service, not evidence of how accurately or usefully an agent will remember. The documentation labels the feature beta and specifies the agent-memory-2026-07-22 beta header for memory-store requests; API behavior and beta status can change. Anthropic: Using agent memory
The cited implementation documentation does not provide an independent benchmark showing that a particular memory design improves agent effectiveness. Evaluate a system against its own tasks, permission boundaries, correction needs, and retrieval behavior rather than treating storage capacity as a proxy for quality.
