Those are different measures, and neither guarantees the connection on a particular flight: the aircraft’s Wi-Fi provider, route, and installation status all matter.
Which airline has the fastest in-flight Wi-Fi?
United led on median download speed in the reported comparison, but its results varied sharply by onboard provider. United’s median was 319.99 Mbps on Starlink, 56.48 Mbps on Intelsat, and 15.34 Mbps on Inmarsat. These are measurements from the second half of 2025, not a forecast for any individual flight. Android Authority’s summary of Ookla’s results reports the figures.

The same comparison reported Starlink median speeds above 300 Mbps for Emirates, airBaltic, and Alaska Airlines, and 281.56 Mbps for Air France. These historical results should not be read as current fleet-wide guarantees.

airBaltic was the consistency leader in the same second-half 2025 comparison. It also found that airBaltic, WestJet, Hawaiian Airlines, and Air France reached at least 25 Mbps download in 90% of tests. Consistency can be more useful than a single high speed result when the goal is a connection that remains usable, though it does not establish coverage on a specific itinerary. The Android Authority summary attributes these findings to Ookla Speedtest Intelligence.

- DUAL-BAND WIFI 6 ROUTER: Wi-Fi 6(802.11ax) technology achieves faster speeds, greater capacity and reduced network congestion compared to the previous gen. All WiFi routers require a separate modem. Dual-Band WiFi routers do not support the 6 GHz band.
- AX1800: Enjoy smoother and more stable streaming, gaming, downloading with 1.8 Gbps total bandwidth (up to 1200 Mbps on 5 GHz and up to 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz). Performance varies by conditions, distance to devices, and obstacles such as walls.
- CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
- EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
- OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.
What matters besides speed?
There is no single all-purpose winner for every traveler. A useful comparison separates performance from availability and access terms:
- Speed: Median download speed indicates typical throughput in the measured results, not the maximum possible speed.
- Consistency: The share of tests above a usable threshold helps show how often connections reached that level during the measurement period.
- Aircraft and route coverage: Equipment is installed plane by plane, and some routes may have no onboard Wi-Fi.
- Price and eligibility: Complimentary access may require an airline account or loyalty membership.
- Allowed uses: A fast connection does not necessarily permit calls, livestreams, or every other application.
The reported speed rankings are secondary summaries of Ookla’s measurements, not a live league table. Airline announcements establish an airline’s own rollout and access terms; they do not independently validate passenger performance.

Which airlines have notable Wi-Fi rollouts in 2026?
Availability is changing as airlines install new systems. The dated examples below illustrate why a carrier name alone is not enough to identify the service on a flight.

Alaska’s official tracker reported that 38% of its aircraft had Starlink as of September 25, 2026, and lists aircraft types by installation status. The tracker is refreshed monthly. Alaska and Hawaiian say Wi-Fi is complimentary for Atmos Rewards members on Starlink-equipped aircraft. Hawaiian neighbor-island flights do not have onboard Wi-Fi. Lufthansa Group
Lufthansa Group announced that its first Starlink-equipped Lufthansa A320neo flight would operate on August 19, 2026, with installation across group airlines targeted by 2029. At launch, access is free for Miles & More members and Travel ID users. The group prohibits voice and video calls and livestreams. See Lufthansa Group’s announcement.
Emirates
Emirates said on July 2, 2026 that Starlink had been installed on 33 Boeing 777s and three A380s, with more installations planned. The airline says access is complimentary and equipped A380s can provide more than 2 Gbps of combined bandwidth. That aircraft-level bandwidth claim is not comparable to a passenger’s median speed-test result. Details are in Emirates’ announcement.

How to check Wi-Fi for your specific flight
- Start with your route and travel date. Look up the airline’s current Wi-Fi or aircraft information; during a retrofit, not every plane in a fleet will have the new equipment.
- Identify the metric you care about. Use median speed as a guide to typical throughput and consistency as a separate measure of how often tests reached a given level. If you need real-time communication, check latency and the airline’s rules for calls and streaming.
- Verify the service and provider for the aircraft if available. United’s widely different provider-specific medians show why an airline-level ranking may conceal important differences.
- Read the access conditions. Confirm whether complimentary Wi-Fi requires an account or loyalty membership and whether your intended applications are allowed.
- Distinguish independent measurements from airline claims. A measured median, a marketing speed claim, and combined bandwidth for an aircraft describe different things and should not be compared as if they were the same metric.
