What Really Happens to Your Data When You Turn On a VPN?

A VPN routes covered traffic through its server and can shield it from your local network or ISP, but it shifts trust to the provider and does not make you anonymous.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When you turn on a VPN, traffic covered by the app is routed through a VPN provider’s server, usually inside an encrypted tunnel between your device and that server. Your Wi-Fi operator or internet service provider may no longer be able to read that tunneled traffic, but the VPN provider becomes a new party you must trust. Websites can still recognize your accounts and other identifying information, and what the VPN app protects depends on its settings and implementation.

How your data travels through a VPN

  1. Your device creates a connection to the VPN server. The app routes some or all of your internet traffic through a server operated by the VPN provider. Properly encrypted traffic is protected on the route between your device and that server. Coverage depends on the app and configuration; some VPN apps may not encrypt traffic or may encrypt only some of it, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) cautions.
  2. The VPN server sends traffic onward. The server connects to the requested website or service. The destination sees a connection from the VPN server, rather than directly from your usual public IP address. The VPN has not made the request anonymous: the provider handles traffic emerging from its tunnel.
  3. The destination responds through the route. Information sent back to your device travels through the VPN server and the tunnel. Encryption between your device and the VPN server does not, by itself, mean every connection beyond that server is encrypted. For a website connection, HTTPS provides encryption between your browser and the website; a VPN is a separate layer.

The key change is the trust boundary. The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) explains that a VPN shifts trust from your ISP to the VPN provider. That does not mean every VPN provider records everything; what a service can see, collects, or retains depends on its design and practices.

Who can see what when the VPN is on?

Observer What may be visible What the VPN changes
Your local Wi-Fi operator or ISP That your device is connected to a VPN endpoint, along with network metadata such as connection timing and volume. With a properly configured, encrypted tunnel, the observer cannot directly read the tunneled content or see the websites visited from that traffic. The observer can still identify the VPN connection and provider. EFF’s encryption guide describes this distinction.
VPN provider The traffic that emerges from its server and associated connection metadata; the provider may be able to see, store, or modify traffic. The provider becomes a party in the route. Its actual collection and retention depend on the service’s operation and policy. A “no logs” statement alone does not establish that no data is collected.
DNS resolver Domain-name queries it receives, and potentially transport identifiers. If DNS queries bypass the tunnel, a resolver outside it may learn the queried names. Encrypting DNS transport can protect queries from some observers on the path, but not from the resolver that handles them. RFC 8932 explains that a resolver operator can in principle see query data.
Website or app you use The VPN server’s exit address, plus information you provide or that identifies you, such as account sign-in and cookies. A VPN changes the apparent network origin; it does not remove an account identity or erase identifying details you submit. The FTC notes that sites may detect VPN use and continue tracking information users share.

What a VPN does not hide from websites

A VPN does not sign you out of services, remove browser cookies, or prevent identification through information you enter. If you log in to an account, the service can associate your activity with that account even when the connection comes from a VPN server. The FTC’s guidance puts it plainly: “A VPN app generally isn’t going to make you entirely anonymous.”

The VPN server also sits between your client and the destination. RFC 9614 describes how the server can see identifiers of both. A VPN can change which network address a destination sees without making the whole connection or the person using it invisible.

DNS, split tunneling, and leak paths

DNS queries

DNS translates a domain name, such as a site’s name, into an address a device can connect to. Whether those lookups pass through the VPN depends on the app and system configuration. If they go to a resolver outside the tunnel, that resolver may learn the names being queried. DNS encryption changes who can observe the query in transit; it does not conceal the query from the resolver itself.

Split tunneling and WebRTC

Some VPN configurations route only selected apps or traffic through the tunnel. This can be intentional, but it means traffic outside the selected route is not covered by that VPN tunnel. WebRTC can expose an ISP-facing public IP in some split-tunnel configurations, and can bypass a proxy when direct internet access remains available, according to RFC 8828. This is a configuration-dependent risk, not an inevitable feature of every VPN.

How to assess a VPN’s data handling

No single label or setting establishes what a particular service collects. Before relying on a VPN for a specific privacy purpose, check how its app routes traffic and what the provider says it does with data.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Encryption coverage: Determine whether the app protects all device traffic or only selected traffic, and whether any apps or connections are excluded.
  • DNS routing: Check which resolver handles DNS requests and whether queries remain inside the VPN route.
  • Split-tunnel settings: Review which apps or destinations bypass the tunnel, including whether direct internet access is allowed.
  • Permissions: Review the app’s requested permissions and whether they make sense for its stated function. The FTC recommends reviewing VPN app permissions and privacy terms.
  • Collection and retention: Read the provider’s privacy policy for what data it collects, how long it keeps it, and whether it shares data with third parties. EFF recommends reviewing the provider’s VPN guidance, including privacy policies and transparency reports.
  • Legal requests and transparency: Look for clear disclosures about how the provider handles legal requests and what its transparency reporting covers. A policy is a statement of practice, not proof that a particular service behaves as claimed.

The practical takeaway

A VPN can protect properly tunneled traffic from direct observation by the local network or ISP, while making the VPN provider a more important part of the trust equation. It does not guarantee anonymity, hide activity from every party, or ensure that no data is retained. The useful question is not simply whether a VPN is on, but which traffic it covers, where DNS goes, and what the provider’s documented data practices say.
