React Native’s move to the React Foundation changed who owns and supports the project at an organizational level—not who decides its technical direction. Meta announced the transition in October 2025; the Foundation officially launched in February 2026 as an independent organization hosted by the Linux Foundation.
What does React Native joining the React Foundation mean?
It means React Native became part of an independent foundation alongside React and JSX. The Foundation provides an organizational home for the projects and is intended to support shared needs such as infrastructure, React Conf and ecosystem initiatives. The change did not make the Foundation board responsible for setting React Native’s technical roadmap.

Meta’s October 7, 2025 announcement described the planned transition of React and React Native, among other ecosystem projects. On February 24, 2026, the React blog announced that the Foundation had officially launched and that React Native, React and JSX were owned by the independent React Foundation rather than Meta. Meta’s announcement and the Foundation launch update distinguish project ownership from technical governance.

The Foundation’s board and the project’s technical governance are separate. The launch update said React’s technical direction would continue to be set by contributors and maintainers, not by the Foundation board. At launch, a provisional leadership council was working out the technical governance structure. The update did not describe that structure as finalized.

This distinction matters: transferring ownership to a foundation does not, by itself, tell developers how a framework will change or who will approve each technical decision. The launch post also listed repository, website and infrastructure transfers among the next steps, so it should not be read as confirmation that every operational transfer was already complete.
What did Meta commit to?
Meta said it would continue investing in React and maintain a dedicated full-time engineering team working on React and React Native. In its October 2025 announcement, Meta described a five-year partnership and a commitment of over $3 million, including funding and engineering support. That is Meta’s stated commitment in the announcement, not a claim about a recurring annual amount.

Who is involved in the React Foundation?
The planned board named in Meta’s 2025 announcement included Amazon, Callstack, Expo, Meta, Microsoft, Software Mansion and Vercel, with an intention to expand. At the Foundation’s February 2026 launch, the React blog named eight Platinum founding members: Amazon, Callstack, Expo, Huawei, Meta, Microsoft, Software Mansion and Vercel. It also named Seth Webster as executive director.

The change from the planned board list to the launch’s founding-member list reflects two different announcements and categories; the launch list includes Huawei. The launch post identifies the Linux Foundation as host of the React Foundation.

Is this a change to React Native’s supported platforms?
The Foundation transition is an ownership and organizational change, not an announced platform-support change. React Native’s official blog says official support for Meta Quest devices was announced at React Conf 2025. That is a separate example of the framework’s platform reach; it should not be attributed to the Foundation move.

Use the official React Native getting-started documentation for current setup and learning guidance. Last updated August 12, 2026, it is intended for learners at different experience levels, can be read linearly or consulted by section, and lists JavaScript fundamentals as a prerequisite.

React Native in Action, a first-edition paperback by Nader Dabit published by Manning in 2019, is an optional project-based background resource. Its age makes it unsuitable as a guide to current setup and release requirements or to the Foundation’s governance; use the official documentation for those.
