Expo SDK 55 gave React Native developers a way to build parts of an app with real SwiftUI on iOS and Jetpack Compose on Android, while adding iOS-specific navigation and widget capabilities. That is what “actually native” means here: React code can call platform UI frameworks and behaviors; it does not turn the whole app into native code or guarantee identical results across devices.
What “native” means in this Expo release
React Native apps are commonly written in JavaScript or TypeScript and React. Expo UI adds a different option for particular interface elements: developers can compose SwiftUI or Jetpack Compose interfaces from React code. The app can therefore use platform UI frameworks where they suit the feature while retaining React Native for other parts.

This is a choice about implementation, not a blanket transformation of an app. The release notes do not establish universal performance gains or identical appearance on every device; there was no controlled comparison supporting those claims.
What Expo SDK 55 introduced
Expo released SDK 55 on February 25, 2026, with React Native 0.83 and React 19.2. Its headline changes covered native UI, platform-specific Router features, and iOS widgets.
#1 Best Overall
| Capability | What it enables | SDK 55 status and scope |
|---|---|---|
@expo/ui |
Build iOS interfaces with SwiftUI and Android interfaces with Jetpack Compose from React. | SwiftUI remained beta; Jetpack Compose moved from alpha to beta. Neither API was available in Expo Go at that time, so developers needed development builds to try them. |
| Expo Router v55 | Use Apple Zoom transitions, Stack.Toolbar, and adaptive or dynamic colors. |
Apple Zoom and Stack.Toolbar were iOS-specific; Android support for Stack.Toolbar was described as future work. |
expo-widgets |
Create iOS home-screen widgets and Live Activities. | Alpha release for iOS. |
These maturity labels describe the SDK 55 release notes, not the status of every feature today. Expo’s later SDK 56 announcement marked the SwiftUI and Jetpack Compose APIs in Expo UI stable. That update does not, by itself, establish a later stability status for expo-widgets.
How to choose an implementation approach
Use native UI selectively rather than assuming every screen should be rewritten. Evaluate each feature against the platform behavior it needs and the SDK your team will target.

- Use Expo UI when framework access matters. If an interface should be built directly with SwiftUI or Compose, Expo UI provides that route from React code.
- Keep shared behavior shared where practical. SwiftUI and Compose are separate platform frameworks, so a feature built with them may require platform-specific implementation and maintenance.
- Check the target SDK’s stability. SDK 55 labeled both UI APIs beta; the later SDK 56 release announcement marked them stable. Confirm the status and migration requirements for the SDK your app actually uses.
- Account for the development environment. SDK 55’s UI APIs were not available in Expo Go, so trying them required development builds.
- Plan for platform scope and migration cost. Router features such as Apple Zoom and
Stack.Toolbarwere iOS-specific in the SDK 55 release. Teams should weigh that against the benefit of using the platform behavior.
What the “basically native” promise does—and does not—say
SDK 55 brought React Native developers closer to platform UI frameworks and iOS interactions, but “native” is not a single switch. A project can combine JavaScript, React Native, and native-framework interfaces. Which approach makes sense depends on the feature, platform, stability expectations, and willingness to maintain platform-specific code.
