Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →React Flow gives a React application an interactive canvas for nodes and edges, with ways to customize what nodes look like, validate proposed connections, and save or restore flow state. It does not decide what those nodes and edges mean in your product, which combinations are valid, or how the diagram should evolve as your data model changes. For a dependable editor, treat React Flow as the canvas and interaction layer; define and enforce domain rules in your application.
What React Flow provides—and what remains yours to define
The official overview presents React Flow as a graph interface built around nodes, handles, edges, selection, and viewport. Its component renders graph elements and supports user interaction. The quick start shows the basic pattern: provide node and edge arrays, update them through handlers, and create connections.

That foundation is useful, but graph primitives are not a product schema. A node called “service,” “approval,” or “warehouse” has meaning only because your application defines its fields, behavior, and allowed relationships. The same applies to an edge: a line on the canvas does not by itself specify whether it means data movement, dependency, authorization, or something else.

How to express your domain vocabulary in nodes and edges
React Flow’s Custom Nodes guide describes nodes as React components that can contain arbitrary content, including handles, forms, and charts. The editor continues to provide surrounding behavior such as selection, dragging, and connecting. That lets an application present its own vocabulary instead of forcing domain concepts into generic boxes.
Start by defining domain records and relationships independently of how they happen to look on screen. For example, a workflow editor might have an approval step with a required approver group and a lifecycle state; an edge might mean that one step can run after another. The exact fields and types depend on the product—React Flow does not prescribe them.

How to enforce connection and graph rules
React Flow exposes an isValidConnection callback for deciding whether a candidate connection should be added. Its documented type is IsValidConnection = (edge: Edge | Connection) => boolean: the callback receives a proposed edge or connection and returns a boolean. The Validation example demonstrates this accept-or-reject role.

That callback is a useful place to give immediate feedback during a connection gesture, but it should not be the only enforcement point. Imports, programmatic edits, undo/redo, and server-side changes may alter a graph without that gesture. Put the actual invariants in a domain validation layer that can be used at each relevant boundary, then adapt its result to the canvas callback.
Rules worth making explicit
- Which source and target node kinds may connect, and whether particular handles or ports are compatible.
- Whether a node or port has a maximum or minimum number of connections.
- Whether cycles are allowed, and whether the rule applies to the whole graph or only selected relationship types.
- Which fields must be present before a node can be saved or activated.
- Which lifecycle states can coexist, and which rules vary by document or schema version.
The Connection Limit and Preventing Cycles examples show ways to implement graph interactions. They are examples of integration patterns, not a guarantee that a complete application’s domain policy is automatically applied to every way its data can change.

Give users a reason, not just a rejection
The documented connection predicate returns only true or false. A product can keep that small adapter while its domain validator returns a structured result, such as a rule identifier and a human-readable explanation. The editor can then reject the candidate and show the user why—for example, that a target port accepts events but not files. This structured-result design is an application recommendation, not a React Flow API feature.

How to choose what gets saved
React Flow’s Save and Restore example uses the React Flow instance’s toObject method or local nodes and edges state to save and later restore a diagram. This provides a serialization mechanism; it does not determine whether that serialized representation should be your product’s authoritative record.
Best Value
- Includes pen, eraser, belt clip and shoulder strap loop
- Marker stores inside the zipboard
- Removable eraser
- Back side writable to double the space
- Saves time during timeouts
Choose between using the flow object as the durable document and maintaining a separate domain document by asking what the product needs to store and change:
| Decision question | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Do domain records need fields or relationships not represented in canvas state? | If so, a canvas serialization alone may not represent the full business record. |
| Must documents remain readable across format changes? | If so, plan how older saved documents are validated and migrated. |
| Can edits arrive from outside the canvas? | Imports, APIs, or other tools need the same domain checks as editor gestures. |
| How do collaboration and undo/redo work? | The persistence model should account for the product’s actual editing and history behavior. |
If the saved format is part of a product’s long-lived data, define its schema version and migration and validation behavior. That is a prudent application design choice; the save-and-restore example demonstrates serialization, not a prescribed versioning system.
How to test rules outside the editor
Test domain invariants against representative graph documents without requiring a user to drag a connection. Then test the adapter that converts a React Flow connection candidate into the inputs your validator expects. This separates “is this document valid?” from “did this gesture ask to create this edge?”
- Cover valid and invalid combinations of node kinds, ports, cardinality, and lifecycle state.
- Include cycle cases if cycles are restricted.
- Test saved and imported documents at the boundaries where they enter the application.
- Check that invalid proposals yield useful explanations as well as rejection.
This testing strategy follows from the difference between a canvas callback and application-wide domain enforcement; it is implementation advice rather than a testing feature supplied by React Flow.
Where to look for further examples
The official examples index includes patterns for validation, connection limits, preventing cycles, computing flows, and saving and restoring. Advanced examples such as edge routing and collaboration are identified as Pro examples on the examples page. Check the current offering and terms directly if those capabilities matter to an implementation; the examples establish the distinction, not a particular purchase arrangement.
