What RAM Numbers Mean: Speed, Timing, Capacity and More

Decode RAM labels by generation, data rate, capacity, timings and profile, then check the key compatibility details before choosing a module.

RAM labels combine several separate specifications: DDR generation, data rate, capacity, timing, and operating profile or voltage. Read each one independently, then check that the module’s generation, physical size, and supported settings match your computer.

What the main RAM numbers tell you

  • DDR4 or DDR5: The memory generation. It affects compatibility: different DDR generations are not interchangeable in a motherboard.
  • DDR5-4800 or 4800 MT/s: The data rate, measured in millions of transfers per second. It is not the same as clock frequency in MHz.
  • PC5-38400: A peak bandwidth class associated with the data rate. Kingston’s calculation multiplies MT/s by eight: 4,800 MT/s × 8 = 38,400 MB/s, or 38.4 GB/s. That is a theoretical peak transfer bandwidth, not a guarantee of application performance. Kingston explains the data-rate and bandwidth relationship.
  • 16GB or 32GB: Capacity. A kit’s advertised capacity may be the combined total across multiple sticks, so check the number of modules included.
  • CL40 or 40-40-40: Timing values, expressed in clock cycles. CL is CAS latency; following values commonly represent tRCD and tRP, and a fourth value is often tRAS.
  • 1.1V, 1.25V, JEDEC or XMP: Voltage and operating-profile information. A module may have a conservative default JEDEC setting and a faster XMP profile with different timing and voltage.

MT/s and MHz are related, but not interchangeable

DDR memory transfers data twice per clock cycle. As a result, a DDR5-4800 module has a 4,800 MT/s data rate, while a monitoring tool may show a 2,400 MHz memory clock. The two figures describe different things; seeing roughly half the advertised MT/s figure in a MHz readout does not by itself mean the memory is running incorrectly. Kingston addresses why CPU-Z may show half the frequency.

How to read a timing string

A timing such as CL40 or 40-40-40 expresses delays in memory clock cycles. A lower cycle count can mean fewer cycles for a particular operation, but it does not establish that one module is faster overall. Data rate and the other timing values matter too, so compare the full timing string alongside the rate rather than judging by CL alone.

Default speed, XMP and voltage

A product’s advertised profile speed may differ from its default programmed speed. Kingston’s 2022 datasheet for the 32GB KF556C40BB-32 desktop DIMM lists an XMP DDR5-5600 profile with CL40-40-40 timings at 1.25V, and a default JEDEC DDR5-4800 profile with CL40-39-39 timings at 1.1V. These are that module’s published settings, not universal DDR5 requirements. See the module datasheet.

Crucial 32GB DDR5 RAM Kit (2x16GB), 5600MHz (or 5200MHz or 4800MHz) Laptop Memory 262-Pin SODIMM, Compatible with Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000, Black - CT2K16G56C46S5
  • Boosts System Performance: 32GB DDR5 RAM laptop memory kit (2x16GB) that operates at 5600MHz, 5200MHz, or 4800MHz to improve multitasking and system responsiveness for smoother performance
  • Accelerated gaming performance: Every millisecond gained in fast-paced gameplay counts—power through heavy workloads and benefit from versatile downclocking and higher frame rates
  • Optimized DDR5 compatibility: Best for 12th Gen Intel Core and AMD Ryzen 7000 Series processors — Intel XMP 3.0 and AMD EXPO also supported on the same RAM module
  • Trusted Micron Quality: Backed by 42 years of memory expertise, this DDR5 RAM is rigorously tested at both component and module levels, ensuring top performance and reliability
  • ECC Type = Non-ECC, Form Factor = SODIMM, Pin Count = 262-Pin, PC Speed = PC5-44800, Voltage = 1.1V, Rank And Configuration = 1Rx8

Using a faster advertised profile can require enabling XMP and depends on support from the CPU and motherboard. Check the system’s supported memory configurations; a board or system may not run every published speed and timing combination. Kingston’s DDR5 memory support guidance discusses configuration considerations.

Worked example: decoding one Kingston label

The Kingston KF556C40BB-32 datasheet identifies a 32GB DDR5-5600 CL40 288-pin DIMM. Its model number is specific to Kingston: manufacturers use their own part-number conventions, so do not assume the same characters have the same meaning across brands.

Check compatibility before comparing RAM

  1. Match the generation and form factor. Confirm the computer takes the relevant DDR generation and module type. Desktop DIMMs and laptop SO-DIMMs differ physically; a label alone does not confirm fit.
  2. Confirm capacity and stick count. Check both the total capacity you need and whether the listing is for one module or a multi-stick kit.
  3. Check the supported data rate. Verify the motherboard and CPU support the stated MT/s configuration; a product’s advertised rate is not a compatibility guarantee.
  4. Compare timings at the stated rate. Read the full timing string, not just CL, and compare modules at their relevant operating profiles.
  5. Check profile and voltage support. Find out whether the advertised rate is a JEDEC default or requires XMP, and whether the system supports that profile and voltage.

Kingston’s live glossary lists DDR5 speeds from 3,200 to 7,200 MT/s and a nominal voltage of 1.1V; that range describes the glossary’s coverage, not every current DDR5 product. See Kingston’s DDR5 overview. A higher generation, a higher data rate, or a lower CL number alone does not establish the best choice for a particular computer.
