An access point name (APN) is the carrier data-connection configuration your phone uses to connect to an IP data network. It is not the name of a Wi-Fi network or a physical access-point device.
What does APN mean?
APN stands for Access Point Name. In mobile-device settings, it refers to configuration used to establish a connection between a cellular device and a carrier’s data network. Android’s API reference describes it as configuration that connects a cellular network device to an IP data network: Android Developers: ApnSetting.

The carrier uses the APN name, type, and other settings to determine how the connection works. Those details can affect the IP address assigned to the device, the security methods used, and whether the connection can reach private networks.

No. A cellular APN is connection configuration for a carrier’s mobile-data network. A Wi-Fi access point is a device that lets wireless clients connect to a local network. The shared phrase “access point” does not make them the same thing. See the NIST glossary definition of an access point and Cisco’s explanation of Wi-Fi access points.

What information can APN settings contain?
Depending on the carrier and service, an APN configuration screen may include fields such as the APN, APN type, username and password, authentication, proxy, or MMS settings. Not every carrier requires every field, and the right values are specific to the service. The APN is one part of the connection configuration, not a universal set of values that works for every phone or carrier.
Should you change your APN settings?
Usually, do not change them unless your carrier tells you to. If you and your provider determine that a change is needed, Motorola says to obtain the APN and detailed settings from the provider: Motorola Support: Access point name (APN). T-Mobile also warns that an incorrect entry can disrupt mobile data or other service; follow its APN instructions only if they apply to your account and device.

Where do APN settings appear?
The location and availability of APN controls depend on the phone, its software, and carrier policy. Some carriers restrict editing; on iPhone, access to these settings depends on carrier support. T-Mobile’s instructions describe menu paths for supported Android and iPhone devices, but the steps should not be assumed to apply to every carrier or model.
