Quantum benchmarking measures selected aspects of a quantum computer through defined experiments or workloads. One test may estimate the average performance of a gate set; another may check whether a system can run circuits of a particular width and depth. The scores answer different questions, so no single number captures a device’s overall quality—or gives a universal probability that a full computation will fail.
What quantum benchmarking measures
A benchmark applies a specified protocol and reports how the device performs under it. Depending on the test, it may examine individual operations, a collection of gates, circuit execution, or a broader system workload that also involves software and compilation.

That scope matters when reading a result: an error metric for a gate is not interchangeable with a score for running a circuit. A benchmark is most informative when its name, protocol, included qubits and operations, and measured outcome are reported alongside the number.

How randomized benchmarking works
Randomized benchmarking (RB) estimates the performance of a defined gate set by applying sequences of randomly selected gates. In the idealized protocol, a final gate is chosen to invert the preceding sequence, returning the system to its starting state. Researchers measure the probability of that expected outcome as they increase sequence length.

The survival probability typically decays as sequences get longer. Fitting that decay yields an error estimate for the gate set under the protocol’s assumptions. The result is an average metric for the tested operations and conditions—not a direct measurement of every gate’s individual behavior or a prediction that an entire application will fail at that rate.
RB is one method, not a universal standard score. Results depend on factors such as which gates and qubits were included, the sequence lengths, and whether operations were tested alone or simultaneously. A multiqubit RB protocol may report performance per composite Clifford operation, while a variation may estimate component-gate performance; those values should not be treated as equivalent.

How other benchmark methods differ
| Method | What it examines | What to check when comparing results |
|---|---|---|
| Randomized benchmarking | Average performance of a gate set inferred from survival-probability decay over random sequences. | Gate set and qubit count; sequence lengths; assumptions and reported error metric; whether measurements were simultaneous or isolated. |
| Multiqubit randomized benchmarking | Performance of multi-qubit Clifford operations; protocol variations can assess component gates. | Native gate, connectivity, qubits included, sequence construction, and whether the reported value is per composite operation or component gate. |
| Gate-set tomography (GST) | A more comprehensive, self-calibrating reconstruction of a gate set. | System size, precision and assumptions, modeling and computational costs, and whether the purpose is diagnosis or a compact benchmark. |
| Quantum volume and volumetric or system benchmarks | Ability to run defined circuits at the system level, potentially including compilation as well as gate behavior. | Circuit width and depth, compilation, success criterion, representative qubit selection, and the exact workload. |
These methods are not a league table. Gate-set tomography aims to characterize behavior more fully, while many benchmarks summarize selected performance in a compact score. A system-level result asks a different question from a component-level measurement.

Why benchmarking matters
Repeatable benchmarks help researchers track engineering progress and judge whether hardware is performing well for its intended tasks. They can also make it easier to identify where improvements are needed, provided the test’s scope is clear.

NIST describes its quantum program as developing measurement science techniques, tools, and related standards to support the quantum industry (NIST Quantum Science). DARPA describes quantum benchmarking as a way to estimate long-term utility by quantitatively measuring progress toward challenging computational goals (DARPA Quantum Benchmarking). These aims extend beyond producing a headline score: measurement can inform research priorities and help assess progress toward useful computation.
How to judge a benchmark claim
- Identify the test. Look for the benchmark name and protocol; a bare “error rate” or “quantum volume” figure is not enough to establish what was measured.
- Check the scope. Note the qubits, gates or circuits included, along with circuit depth or workload where relevant.
- Check the conditions. Determine whether gates were measured individually or simultaneously, how sequences were constructed, and whether compilation is part of the result.
- Compare like with like. Two scores are meaningfully comparable only when their protocols, scope, and reported outcomes align closely enough for the same question.
- Separate component performance from application performance. A gate-level metric alone does not establish that a complete workload is useful or demonstrates practical quantum advantage.
What benchmark numbers do—and do not—say
A gate error or infidelity describes performance according to a particular measurement protocol. It should not be described as the probability that a full computation fails: errors across operations and the structure of a workload affect the outcome, and a single error rate does not map to failure probability in every context. A 2025 review emphasizes the need to distinguish component-level metrics from system- and workload-level evaluation (Practical Introduction to Benchmarking and Characterization of Quantum Computers).

Historical results illustrate why the conditions must travel with the figure. In a 2007 trapped-ion experiment, NIST authors reported a one-qubit error probability of 0.00482(17) per randomized π/2 pulse (Randomized Benchmarking of Quantum Gates). In a separate 2012 trapped-ion experiment, NIST authors reported 0.162 ± 0.008 error per random two-qubit Clifford unitary and 0.069 ± 0.017 per phase gate (Randomized Benchmarking of Multiqubit Gates). These are results from specific experiments, not current industry-wide specifications or comparable universal scores.
