A wireless all-in-one inkjet suits mixed home tasks such as color documents, photos, scanning and copying. A monochrome laser is worth considering if you mainly print text and may leave the printer idle for weeks. Compare supplies and upkeep as well as the sticker price; neither type is best for every occasional user.
Start with what you print
Mixed documents, color and photos
A wireless all-in-one inkjet is a flexible fit when you need color output alongside everyday documents, or want scanning and copying in the same device. HP describes fewer than 50 pages per month as occasional home use and recommends a wireless all-in-one inkjet for that use case. That is HP’s guidance, not a universal cutoff or an independent ranking. HP’s home-use printer guide

Mostly text and long gaps between jobs
If you rarely print anything beyond text, compare a monochrome laser printer. It avoids paying for color capability you do not need, and its toner is dry powder rather than liquid ink. ENERGY STAR’s buying guide says laser printers typically have a lower cost per page than inkjets, but its guide includes a 2013 bibliography, so treat that as a general comparison rather than a current model-specific cost estimate. Inkjet nozzles can dry after installation and inactivity. HP recommends printing at least one page every one to two weeks to reduce that risk. If that cadence sounds unrealistic, a laser printer may be a more convenient match for long stretches without printing. HP’s advice on preventing ink from drying

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
For an inkjet, follow the device’s built-in maintenance guidance. Cleaning cycles use ink, so avoid repeatedly running them if print quality does not improve.
Compare the cost beyond the purchase price
A printer’s initial price does not tell you what it will cost to keep using it. Include replacement ink or toner, maintenance and paper in your estimate. Consumer Reports’ 2026 budget-printer article estimates ink at $97 per year for an example $45 inkjet and $4 per year for an example $230 tank printer. Those are estimates for the cited machines, not typical prices for every printer or guaranteed annual costs. Consumer Reports’ budget-printer examples

When a refillable tank may make sense
Tank printers can reduce ongoing ink expense, but generally require a higher upfront outlay. Consider one only after weighing its purchase price against how many pages you expect to print and how long you plan to keep it. Very low volume may not give you enough time or printing to recoup the difference.

ENERGY STAR’s guide says inkjets can cost four to five times as much per page as laser printers, depending on ink use. Because that comparison comes from a guide with a 2013 bibliography, it should not be treated as a current quote for a particular printer. Choose features that solve a real home need
- Scanning and copying: An all-in-one combines these functions with printing; choose one if you expect to use them.
- Wireless printing: Useful if you want to print from several devices without connecting each one by cable.
- Automatic duplexing: Prints on both sides of the paper, which can reduce paper use for suitable documents.
- Sleep mode and draft quality: Sleep mode can reduce energy use, and draft settings can use less ink for internal documents when the output quality is acceptable.
- Size: Check the device’s dimensions against the space where you plan to keep it.
Before ordering replacement ink or toner, verify that the supply is compatible with your exact printer model.

- List your usual jobs. Choose an inkjet if you need color, photos, or occasional scanning and copying; compare monochrome laser options if your jobs are mostly text.
- Be honest about idle time. If you pick an inkjet, plan for HP’s suggested one-page print every one to two weeks to reduce drying risk. If you cannot maintain that cadence, weigh a laser’s dry toner.
- Estimate total ownership cost. Add purchase price, likely supplies, maintenance and paper. Consider a tank model only if expected volume and ownership time justify its higher upfront cost.
- Check the exact features and supplies. Confirm wireless support, scanning or copying, duplexing and model-compatible cartridges or toner before buying.
When you print, preview the job, use duplexing where appropriate and select draft quality for internal documents if it is good enough. These habits can help avoid unnecessary pages and supply use.
