“Print to email” can mean three different things: sending an email to a printer to put it on paper, scanning paper and emailing the scan, or turning a digital document into a PDF to attach to an email. The right steps depend on the direction you want the document to go.
What does “print to email” mean?
It is an ambiguous phrase, not one universal printer command. Ask whether you want to move information from email to paper, from paper to an email attachment, or from a digital file to an email attachment.

How email-to-print works
Email-to-print sends an email and/or attachment to a compatible printer so it can produce a physical copy. The printer must support the feature and usually needs to be registered with the manufacturer’s service. Epson described its own Email Print service as letting users email photos and documents to a compatible printer from an email-capable device; that is a description of Epson’s service, not a universal printer standard. Epson’s 2012 announcement explains that service concept.
Requirements and restrictions vary by manufacturer and service. For example, Epson Australia’s Email Print FAQ says its service requires an internet-connected printer and specifies supported file formats. It also gives limits of up to 10 attachments and 10 MB total, and one address in the To field. Check access controls
Email-to-print can expose a printer to unwanted jobs if anyone who knows its email address can send to it. Epson says its default setting allows anyone with the printer’s address to submit jobs, while its optional Approved Senders List can limit permitted addresses or domains. Epson also advises removing a printer’s registration before transferring or disposing of it, so messages intended for that device do not print elsewhere. How scan-to-email works
Scan-to-email converts a physical page into a digital file and sends that file as an email attachment. Some multifunction printers can scan and share by email; a phone or computer can also scan a page, save the resulting file, and let you attach it to a message. A multifunction printer may suit frequent or multi-page paper scanning. For an occasional page, an existing phone or computer may be enough. Check a printer’s exact model and setup requirements before relying on scan-to-email functionality.

If the document already exists as a file, attach that file to your email; there is no need to print it. If the recipient needs a PDF, use the PDF export or print-to-PDF option available on your device, save the resulting PDF, and attach it. The exact controls vary by operating system and app, so use the options shown in the software you have.

Which method should you use?
- You need a paper copy of an emailed file: Use email-to-print only if your printer and its service support it and are set up.
- You need to send someone a paper document: Scan it with a multifunction printer, phone, or computer, then email the saved file.
- You already have the document on your device: Attach the existing file, or export it to PDF first if that format is required.
