You can run an animated 3D Earth as a Windows wallpaper by loading the earth-wallpaper.html file from the earth-wallpaper project into Lively Wallpaper. Its globe animation combines mapped day and night textures, procedural clouds, and a moving day/night boundary; it is not a stream of current satellite photographs or weather observations.
What this live Earth wallpaper actually shows
The project describes its globe as “A photorealistic, real-time 3-D Earth rendered entirely in the browser using Three.js and custom GLSL shaders.” The animation is generated in the browser: it renders an Earth surface, shifts the illuminated boundary, and layers in visual effects rather than replacing the wallpaper with newly captured satellite imagery.

Its listed elements include NASA-attributed Blue Marble surface imagery, Black Marble city lights on the night side, procedural clouds, an atmospheric rim, and a star field. The README describes the cloud field as procedural, so “real-time” here refers to the rendering and animation, not live weather. The project also exposes adjustable properties through Lively Wallpaper. Project README
Recommended Free Tools
The project README states a 60 fps rendering target and an option to lock the animation at 30 fps to save GPU power. Those are project claims, not independently measured performance results; the available documentation does not establish a minimum GPU requirement or battery impact. Project README

How to install it with Lively Wallpaper
The project documents Lively Wallpaper v2.x on Windows 10 and Windows 11. Its installation instructions are:
- Download or clone the earth-wallpaper repository and locate
earth-wallpaper.html. - Open Lively Wallpaper and select Add Wallpaper.
- Choose From File, then select
earth-wallpaper.html. - Allow an internet connection on the first load so the wallpaper can fetch its textures from NASA servers. Adjust the wallpaper’s available properties in Lively if desired.
These are the repository’s documented steps; they have not been independently tested here. For a blank wallpaper, its README recommends checking WebView2. It says WebView2 is included with Windows 11 and directs Windows 10 users to install the WebView2 Runtime. Project README

Using local texture files
The README also documents optional local texture files: world.topo.bathy.200401.3x5400x2700.png at 5400 × 2700 pixels and BlackMarble_2016_3km.jpg at approximately 13,500 × 6,750 pixels. Local files can override network fetches and provide the documented high-resolution textures, but large images use storage and memory. Follow the repository’s instructions for placing them. Project README
Does it show current satellite images?
No. This project animates a 3D globe using mapped imagery and procedural clouds. That creates a continuously moving wallpaper, but it does not establish that the cloud patterns or surface are current observations. If you want imagery refreshed from satellite observations, a dedicated satellite-wallpaper tool is a better fit.

Rendered globe versus refreshed satellite wallpaper
These projects describe different approaches. The figures below are claims in their respective repositories, not results from a controlled comparison; feed availability and current maintenance are not established by those descriptions.
| Project | What appears on the desktop | Coverage and refresh | Windows route or network detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| earth-wallpaper | Animated 3D globe with procedural clouds and day/night imagery | Rendering is animated; it is not described as refreshed satellite observation | Load earth-wallpaper.html through Lively Wallpaper; first load needs an internet connection for textures |
| SpaceEye | Publicly available satellite imagery | Repository lists 12 views from five geostationary satellites; images download roughly every 10 minutes to an hour depending on the view | Repository says it is available for Windows and Mac; imagery providers include NOAA STAR and RAMMB at Colorado State University |
| Satpaper | Wallpaper generated from near-real-time imagery from RAMMB SLIDER | Offers GOES East, GOES West, Himawari, Meteosat 9, and Meteosat 10 regions | Repository lists automatic Windows 10/11 support; downloads are typically about 20 MB every 10 to 15 minutes, with size varying by satellite and image |
| liewa | Near-real-time Earth pictures, with geostationary satellite, Sentinel, Solar Dynamics Observatory, and NASA Astronomy Picture of the Day options | Choices include different imagery sources and coverage types | Supports Windows, Linux, and macOS; Windows instructions point to a release installer |
