How to choose a nozzle for the surface and soil
Start with the surface, not just the dirt
A tough stain does not make a delicate surface suitable for a narrow, forceful stream. Consider whether the material and finish can tolerate concentrated spray, especially around paint, wood, vehicle finishes, siding, joints, seals, and edges. Follow the surface maker’s care instructions; a nozzle label cannot override them.

Wider fans spread water over more area and are generally gentler. Narrower fans concentrate the stream and raise the risk of damage. Start with the widest suitable spray and the lowest effective force. Move closer or choose a more concentrated tip only if the soil remains and the surface tolerates the added force.

Use detergent when the task calls for it
The low-pressure soap tip is for applying detergent, not for forcefully removing grime. Choose detergent formulated for pressure washers, then follow the detergent label and machine instructions.
A cautious method for using pressure-washer tips
- Check the manual. Confirm the machine’s recommended tips, operating instructions, and safety guidance before starting.
- Choose a conservative starting point. Use the widest spray that suits the job and the lowest effective force. Sealey’s manual advises starting with its green nozzle and moving toward higher intensity as needed; the included tips and labels can vary by machine. Sealey manuals
- Test out of sight. Try the spray on an inconspicuous area and check the surface before cleaning the full area.
- Keep the spray moving. Do not linger on one spot. Take particular care near paint, wood, vehicle finishes, siding, joints, seals, and edges.
- Increase intensity only if appropriate. If the dirt remains, adjust distance or nozzle concentration gradually, stopping if the surface changes or shows damage.
- Protect people and animals. Never direct the stream at them; follow the machine’s safety instructions.
There is no universal safe distance for every washer, surface, and nozzle. Use the distance and operating advice in the specific machine manual rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all number.

Replacing or buying a nozzle tip
Angle alone does not establish whether a tip will fit or work correctly with a washer. Check its connection style and orifice requirements against the machine manual. Replacement parts can be model-specific: DEWALT lists replacement nozzles by part number. A multi-tip set may be useful when it includes tips you need, but verify fit and orifice compatibility for your exact washer before buying. Mi-T-M describes a multi-function tip set.
