1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteProfessional gamers do not share one standard ping. A player’s round-trip network time depends on the game, their location, the server they connect to, the route their internet provider takes, and whether they are playing online or on tournament infrastructure. Public sources do not establish a representative current average for pros across games.
What ping means—and what the evidence says
Ping, or network round-trip time (RTT), is how long data takes to travel from a player’s computer to a game server and back, measured in milliseconds. Riot Games Support explains the measure in its Basic Connections Troubleshooting Guide: “Lower latency is better.”

That definition does not produce a universal pro-gamer figure. The available official sources do not provide a current, cross-game dataset of professional players’ average ping. Any single number presented as what “pro gamers” have would therefore overstate what is known.

A target is not a measured average
In its VALORANT netcode article, Riot described a goal of delivering 35 ms ping to 70% of its player base. That is an infrastructure target—not evidence that Riot later achieved it, nor a typical ping for professional players. The same article describes VALORANT servers running at 128 ticks per second. Tick rate is the frequency of server simulation updates, not a player’s ping and not a conversion to ping.

One player’s trace is not a pro benchmark
Electronic Arts’ Apex Legends developer article shows one professional player’s connection trace ranging from a best of 31 ms to a worst of around 522 ms. It illustrates how much a route can vary; it is not an average, a target, or evidence of what professional Apex players generally experience.
Why a low ping number is only part of the picture
Ping measures network travel time, not the entire delay between pressing a button and seeing the result. That experience can also include input processing, rendering, client and server processing, tick timing, and buffering. Riot discusses these interacting factors in its VALORANT gameplay consistency update and VALORANT netcode explanation.

- Jitter is variation in latency over time. Uneven packet arrivals may require buffering, adding delay to smooth the experience.
- Packet loss occurs when packets fail to reach the player or server. Missing data can disrupt play and may require retransmission; Riot recommends keeping packet loss as close to zero as possible.
- Buffering can make perceived delay higher than network RTT alone because the game waits briefly to smooth irregular arrivals.
A single low reading can miss spikes, jitter, or packet loss. Stability over time matters alongside the average ping number.

What small ping differences mean in VALORANT
Riot’s VALORANT netcode article reports that gunfight outcomes among its highest-skilled, evenly matched players often came down to differences of 20–50 ms in tested scenarios. Riot also reported that skilled participants in a blind playtest could identify changes of about 10 ms in peeker’s advantage. These are findings from specific game scenarios and experiments, not universal esports statistics or a general threshold for human perception.

Riot’s stated competitive-integrity goal is that “The internet, game client performance, Riot’s servers, and other players’ machines should never get in the way of providing players with a level playing field in each match.” The goal helps explain why latency and consistency receive attention; it does not establish one ping value that guarantees a fair match.
Why tournament ping may differ from home ping
For major League of Legends events, Riot describes a customized ecosystem intended to optimize latency and performance. Engineers establish a local network and use portable offline game servers that can operate independently of the internet. This event setup is intended to avoid network lag or packet loss during competitive play; it should not be treated as equivalent to an ordinary home connection or assumed to apply to every esports event or title.

Online play depends on the player’s route to a remote server. Riot says physical distance is the largest contributor to latency when a connection is otherwise working normally, while routing and the internet provider’s path also matter. Its networking overview describes VALORANT as rough above 60 ms, while saying League of Legends can remain playable at around 60 ms on average. Those are Riot’s contextual descriptions—not universal cutoffs, guarantees, or a professional-player benchmark.

- If ping is consistently high: check which server you selected and how far away it is. A faster internet plan cannot remove physical distance or guarantee a better route.
- If ping spikes or packet loss appears: test a wired connection if you suspect wireless instability, and check local network conditions and provider or game-server status. A cable cannot fix server geography, a poor ISP route, or an outage.
- If the number looks low but play feels delayed: compare readings over time and inspect jitter and packet loss. Network RTT alone does not reveal input, rendering, server-processing, or buffering delays.
Riot’s support guide and consistency update offer relevant explanations of connection symptoms and latency behavior. A gaming router, cable, or speed upgrade may help in a specific situation, but none guarantees lower game ping.
