CrossFire is AMD’s multi-GPU technology; NVIDIA’s SLI and other multi-GPU configurations are separate NVIDIA-specific arrangements. Two cards installed in one PC do not automatically share game rendering. A DirectX 12 or Vulkan game can use more than one GPU only when its developers implement and configure explicit multi-GPU support.
Why CrossFire cannot pair AMD and NVIDIA cards
CrossFire refers to AMD’s multi-GPU technology, while NVIDIA documents SLI and non-SLI multi-GPU configurations for NVIDIA-based GPUs. These are not interchangeable systems, and neither turns an AMD–NVIDIA pair into a supported CrossFire gaming configuration. AMD’s legacy CrossFire overview and NVIDIA SLI help describe their respective vendor-specific approaches.

A motherboard with multiple PCIe slots, adequate power supply capacity, or a bridge cable cannot add the missing cross-vendor game and driver support. Those components may matter when configuring a supported multi-GPU system, but they do not make mixed-brand CrossFire possible.

DirectX 12 and Vulkan
With DirectX 12 and Vulkan, multi-GPU operation is handled by the game or application rather than being enabled simply by installing two cards. The software must explicitly support multiple GPUs and provide a way to configure them. The API name alone does not mean a particular title will use both cards. AMD explains this requirement in its current MGPU configuration guide.

- Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
- 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
- 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
- Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
- Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs
Older APIs and AMD CrossFire
For older DirectX 9, 10, and 11 applications, AMD’s legacy CrossFire approach relies on driver profiles for supported applications. AMD also describes an AMD-specific DirectX 11 driver extension for transferring resources between GPUs in its CrossfireAPI11 sample. That extension is not a mechanism for linking AMD and NVIDIA cards.
AMD’s current guide says exclusive full-screen mode is required for MGPU in the DirectX 9/10/11 and OpenGL context it covers. Actual compatibility and performance depend on the application; adding a second card does not guarantee a frame-rate increase.

What AMD multi-GPU support requires
AMD’s instructions are based on AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.6.1. The guide describes AMD MGPU support, not mixed-vendor gaming. Its listed requirements and limits include:

- Windows 10 or later with AMD Software installed.
- Displays connected to the primary GPU.
- Discrete Radeon cards from the same family.
- A motherboard and power supply that support the multi-GPU configuration.
- Radeon VII and Radeon RX 7000 series or higher are explicitly listed as unsupported by this MGPU feature.
Older CrossFire guidance is generation-specific. AMD’s legacy guide gives matching-family examples for certain RX, R9, and R7 300 series cards, says some older R9/R7 200 and HD 7000 models may require a CrossFire bridge, and specifies an AMD CrossFire-certified motherboard with two PCIe x16 slots operating at least at x8. Its listed operating systems—Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10—are historical guidance, not a current compatibility promise.

Gaming and compute are different cases
For ordinary game rendering, the practical answer remains no: CrossFire does not combine an AMD and NVIDIA card. Specialized compute work is different. A 2026 arXiv preprint by Jon Hu, Thomas Jia, Jing Zhu, and Zhendong Yu describes engineered heterogeneous AMD–NVIDIA cluster training, including CPU-forwarding and device-direct communication methods. In the authors’ experiments on LLaMA-8B and Qwen2-7B, their system reached up to 98% of the throughput of an NVIDIA-only homogeneous system. That result applies only to the paper’s methods, cluster configuration, and tests; the work requires substantial system-level adaptation and restricts heterogeneous execution to pipeline-parallel groups. It is not a gaming benchmark or evidence of desktop CrossFire compatibility. Read the paper on arXiv.

For a supported configuration, verify each condition against the specific game, application, and GPU generation:

- GPU compatibility: confirm the vendor and family are supported by the intended multi-GPU feature.
- Application support: check whether the game or workload explicitly supports multi-GPU and how it is configured.
- Software and API: verify the driver/software version and graphics API requirements.
- Motherboard layout: confirm slot availability and PCIe lane allocation.
- Power capacity: ensure the PSU can meet the system’s total requirements.
- Workload: distinguish game rendering from compute, which may require application-specific engineering.
Passing the hardware checks cannot make an unsupported AMD–NVIDIA gaming pair work. There is no broadly applicable authoritative benchmark establishing a gaming performance gain for such a mixed-vendor CrossFire setup.
