What PFAS Are and Why They Persist in the Environment

PFAS are thousands of synthetic chemicals, many of which persist because their carbon-fluorine bonds resist breakdown. Their uses, environmental behavior, body clearance, and health evidence differ by compound.

PFAS are a large family of synthetic chemicals, not a single substance. Many persist because their carbon-fluorine bonds resist breaking down, but individual PFAS differ in how they move through the environment, how long they remain in the body, and what is known about their health effects. “Forever chemicals” is shorthand for persistence—not a literal description of every member.

What PFAS means

PFAS stands for per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances. The U.S. Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry (ATSDR) describes them as thousands of synthetic chemicals containing a partially or fully fluorinated carbon chain. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) calls PFAS a very large class that includes PFOA, PFOS, and GenX chemicals. Their structures and properties vary, so the family name does not mean every PFAS behaves alike.

Frequently studied examples include perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS), perfluorohexane sulfonic acid (PFHxS), and perfluorononanoic acid (PFNA). ATSDR says PFOA and PFOS have been phased out of production in the United States; other countries may still manufacture or use them. A phaseout does not remove releases or contamination that already exist.

Why many PFAS persist

The central reason is chemical: carbon-fluorine bonds are strong. ATSDR says PFAS compounds do not fully break down in the environment or human body, while EPA describes PFAS components as breaking down very slowly over time. As a result, chemicals released during production, product use, or waste handling can remain relevant after their original use has ended.

  • 5-stage advanced water filter pitcher: Our filter’s 5-Stage Advanced Water Filtration technology removes 99.9% of dissolved solids – guaranteed.
  • Certified to reduce lead and Total PFAS: This water filter pitcher is certified by IAPMO to reduce Total PFAS (also known as forever chemicals), lead, chlorine, mercury and many other harmful contaminants.
  • Powerful filtration for total confidence: Each water pitcher is equipped with a powerful Culligan with ZeroWater Technology filter, certified to reduce 5x more contaminants than the leading filter.
  • Includes TDS water tester: Our built-in TDS meter measures the level of dissolved solids in your water instantly and alerts you when it’s time to change your filter. When the meter reads 0, that means your filter is removing virtually all TDS from your water.
  • Space-saving design: Our BPA-free pour-through filtered water pitchers and water dispensers fit easily into small refrigerators or stand elegantly on your countertop, saving you space without sacrificing style.

Persistence is not identical across the PFAS family. Environmental behavior and clearance from the human body depend on the particular compound and its structure. ATSDR reports human half-lives ranging from a few days to eight years or more, depending on the PFAS. That is a range across chemicals, not one half-life that applies to all PFAS.

What PFAS have been used for

Resistance to water, oil, grease, or stains has made some PFAS useful in products and industrial processes. Government sources list uses that include water-repellent clothing, stain-resistant fabrics and carpets, some cosmetics, food packaging, firefighting foams, and non-stick, stain-repellent, or waterproof products. ATSDR says PFAS have been used in industry and consumer products since the 1940s.

  • Advanced Filtration: Our 5-Stage Ion Exchange Filter removes virtually all dissolved solids (TDS) for the purest tasting water; Total Dissolved Solids are organic and inorganic materials, such as metals, minerals, salts, and ions dissolved in water.
  • IAPMO Certified & BPA-Free: Our 5-Stage filter is IAPMO Certified to reduce PFOA/PFOS, lead, chromium, and mercury. All Culligan ZeroWater products are made from BPA-Free plastic.
  • Your New Water Filter System: Your purchase includes a 10 Cup water filter pitcher dispenser, 5-Stage Ion Exchange Water Filter, and a TDS meter that read TDS level. Compatible with ZeroWater & Culligan ZeroWater systems and filters.
  • Less Plastic, More Hydration: You can save up to 110 single-use plastic bottles per filter or up to 660 bottles a year while enjoying the purest tasting water with your Culligan Zero Water Filter System.

Those are examples of uses, not proof that every item in a category contains PFAS. Formulations can differ by material, manufacturer, and date. Production and waste streams, as well as product use, can release PFAS into the environment.

How PFAS move through the environment and reach people

PFAS can enter and move through soil, water, and air. Possible human exposure routes include:

Aquagear Water Filter Pitcher – Lead, Chlorine, PFOA/PFOS, Microplastics Filter, 10 Cup, 120 Gallon Filter Life - Filter Media Made in USA
  • Removes 20X more contaminants than a traditional pitcher. Third-party tested to filter lead, chlorine, microplastics, PFOA, PFOS, and more contaminants other filters miss.
  • Keeps good minerals in. Other filters strip out minerals. Aquagear targets nasty contaminants without removing healthy minerals like calcium and magnesium.
  • Last 3X longer. Each Aquagear filter lasts 120 gallons—three times longer than most standard filters.
  • Filter recycling included. Never throw another water filter in the trash again. We send you a postage-paid label so you can return your filter for recycling and keep it out of the landfill.
  • Filter Media Made in USA. The Aquagear filter media is made in an ISO 9000 facility.
  • Drinking water, particularly where a source is affected by PFAS.
  • Food, including some fish, and food packaging made with PFAS.
  • Contaminated soil or dust, and air.
  • Work involving PFAS, including some manufacturing or firefighting activities.
  • Use of certain water-repellent or stain-resistant products.

Which route matters depends on a person’s location and circumstances. A possible route does not establish an individual’s dose or health outcome. EPA says CDC surveys show that most people in the United States have been exposed to some PFAS; most known exposures are relatively low, though long-term exposure to a concentrated source can be higher. Exposure does not mean a person has been harmed.

What is known about health effects

EPA says current research suggests exposure to certain PFAS may lead to adverse health outcomes, while research continues on how effects vary with the chemical and exposure level. The UK government notes that evidence is inconsistent and that only a small number of PFAS have been well studied. It is therefore inaccurate to treat every PFAS as equally hazardous or to infer an individual’s health risk from the family name alone.

ATSDR says PFAS can be measured in blood, but a blood level cannot currently be used to determine what harmful effects might be possible. A test result by itself does not predict illness. For a local drinking-water concern, consult location-specific guidance from public health or water authorities; the sources cited here do not establish the performance of any particular household filter or consumer test kit.

Why “forever chemicals” is shorthand

PFAS are sometimes called “forever chemicals” because many persist for a very long time. The phrase is memorable, but it can imply too much: PFAS are a diverse family, and “forever” does not mean every compound remains unchanged indefinitely or stays in a person’s body for life. The more precise point is that many PFAS resist environmental breakdown, while persistence, movement, and human clearance vary by compound.
