What PC Specs Do You Need for Competitive Fortnite? A Practical Buying Guide

Epic’s Fortnite PC tiers are a starting point, not a 144, 240, or 360 FPS promise. Learn how to use them when planning a competitive setup.

Epic’s published Fortnite PC requirements give a useful starting point, but they do not guarantee 144, 240, or 360 FPS. For a mainstream gaming PC, use Epic’s recommended tier—16 GB or more of RAM and an NVMe SSD—as a baseline, then choose components against your monitor’s resolution and refresh rate using current benchmarks for the settings and game version you plan to play.

What PC specs do you need for competitive Fortnite?

Epic publishes minimum, recommended, and Epic Quality Presets specifications. These describe system requirements and a quality preset, not competitive frame-rate targets. The official tiers are:

Tier Processor Graphics Memory Storage and operating system
Minimum Intel Core i3-3225 at 3.3 GHz Intel HD 4000 or AMD Radeon Vega 8 8 GB RAM Windows 10 64-bit; the page specifies Windows 10 version 22H2 or Windows 10 Enterprise version 21H2
Recommended Intel Core i5-7300U at 3.5 GHz, AMD Ryzen 3 3300U, or equivalent NVIDIA GTX 960, AMD R9 280, or equivalent DirectX 11 GPU; 2 GB VRAM 16 GB RAM or higher NVMe SSD; Windows 10/11 64-bit
Epic Quality Presets Intel Core i7-8700, AMD Ryzen 7 3700X, or equivalent NVIDIA RTX 3070, AMD Radeon RX 6700 XT, or equivalent; 8 GB VRAM or higher 16 GB RAM or higher NVMe SSD; Windows 10/11 64-bit

These are Epic’s published specifications, not a parts list for a chosen competitive FPS target. Epic cautions that a PC meeting only minimum requirements may not run the game at the highest settings. Its requirements page also says lowering graphics settings and closing background applications may help. See Epic’s Fortnite PC system requirements.

How to choose parts for your target display

Start with resolution and refresh rate

Decide which display you intend to use and whether it is 16:9. Epic says Ranked, tournaments, and similar competitive modes are restricted to a 16:9 aspect ratio. The requirements page does not specify frame rates for particular resolutions or refresh rates, so a 144 Hz, 240 Hz, or 360 Hz monitor does not mean the listed requirements will deliver matching FPS.

  • Motherboard Specification: MSI A520M-A PRO motherboard provides reliable performance and expandability for your computing needs
  • Integrated Graphics: AMD Radeon Vega Graphics (CPU Integration) enables you to play 1080P mainstream games at quality frame rates

  • Power Supply: 550W 80PLUS Bronze certified power supply ensures stable and energy-efficient operation

Use recommended specs as a baseline, not an FPS promise

Epic’s recommended CPU and GPU examples establish a published system tier; they do not show how a specific modern processor or graphics card performs at a chosen resolution, settings preset, or competitive FPS target. To choose exact components for 144, 240, or 360 FPS, look for reproducible benchmarks that identify the Fortnite version, resolution, settings, match workload, and test method. Without comparable testing, a precise component recommendation or FPS estimate would be speculative.

Balance the complete system

For a mainstream build, Epic’s recommended tier supports using at least 16 GB of RAM and an NVMe SSD as a practical baseline. It does not establish that storage or memory alone will produce a particular FPS increase, nor do the requirement tiers identify the bottleneck in a given PC. Check that the CPU, graphics card, memory, motherboard, power supply, cooling, and case are compatible with one another before buying.

How much RAM and storage does Fortnite need?

Epic lists 8 GB RAM in the minimum tier and 16 GB or higher in both the recommended and Epic Quality Presets tiers. Its recommended tier specifies an NVMe SSD. Treat those as requirements guidance rather than a guarantee of smooth performance at a particular frame rate.

For older systems, Epic says running Fortnite from an SSD or having 6 GB RAM or higher can help the game fit in memory and reduce hitches and stutters. This advice is not a claim that adding an SSD or RAM will deliver a specific FPS uplift on every system. Epic also says removing high-resolution textures saves over 15 GB of storage and may help computer performance. Read Epic’s low-FPS troubleshooting guidance.

Does Performance Mode improve FPS?

Epic says Performance Mode may increase FPS. The company’s support examples compare two laptops in a standard Squads match at 720p: an i5-8265U laptop with 8 GB RAM and Intel UHD 620 graphics went from 24 FPS to 61 FPS; an AMD A10-5745M laptop with 6 GB RAM and Radeon HD 8610G graphics went from 18 FPS to 45 FPS. These are illustrative results published by Epic, not a controlled benchmark of current gaming desktops or a prediction for another PC.

Enable Performance Mode

  1. Open Fortnite and go to Settings > Video.
  2. Set Rendering Mode to Performance – Lower Graphical Fidelity.
  3. Select Apply, then restart Fortnite.

Epic notes that Performance Mode lowers graphical fidelity. To troubleshoot graphics and performance, Epic also suggests setting quality presets to Low and 3D Resolution to 100%, then adjusting for an appropriate balance. If the PC has a dedicated GPU, check that Fortnite is using it. See Epic’s Performance Mode instructions and Epic’s graphics troubleshooting steps.

Why does Fortnite say “System requirements failed” for a tournament?

Tournament access checks are separate from rendering performance. Epic says a “System requirements failed” message for events requiring Account Level 350 or higher may involve TPM and Secure Boot. It also advises checking whether the CPU meets Fortnite’s recommended system requirements and consulting the PC manufacturer’s official BIOS guidance. An eligibility error does not by itself show that the PC is too slow to run Fortnite. Read Epic’s competitive-event eligibility guidance.

Pre-purchase and setup checklist

  • Choose a 16:9 display if you intend to play Ranked, tournaments, or similar competitive modes.
  • Use Epic’s recommended tier as a baseline, not as a guarantee of a particular FPS.
  • For a mainstream build, account for 16 GB or more of RAM and an NVMe SSD, as specified in Epic’s recommended tier.
  • Verify Windows version, component compatibility, power delivery, and cooling for the complete system.
  • For a specific 144/240/360 FPS target, compare current benchmarks tested at your intended resolution and settings.
  • If a tournament reports an eligibility failure, check TPM, Secure Boot, CPU requirements, and the PC maker’s BIOS guidance separately from performance troubleshooting.
