Choose hardware around the games and display target, the creative apps and media you use, and whether you will stream or record while playing. In practice, the GPU, CPU, memory, and storage need to match those workloads together—not just meet a software minimum.
Start with the work the PC must do
Before comparing components, write down the games you play, the display resolution and frame-rate target, the editing or creation software, the footage or project size, and the effects you expect to use. Add whether you stream or record at the same time, and set a total system budget. Those details determine where extra performance matters.

- Gaming: Select a GPU and CPU based on performance in the specific games, at your resolution, settings, and target frame rate.
- Creation: Check the application’s acceleration support and the demands of your media, codecs, project complexity, and effects.
- Simultaneous workloads: Account for the game, creator software, browser, and streaming or recording software running together.
Software minimums establish whether a configuration meets a published baseline; they are not a promise of smooth performance. Adobe says Premiere’s minimum requirements are for HD editing and publishes higher memory guidance for HD and 4K-or-higher work.
How much GPU and VRAM do you need?
For games, the right GPU depends on the titles, resolution, visual settings, and frame rate you want. For creative software, check whether the application uses the GPU for the tasks in your workflow and how much video memory those projects call for. A GPU can also provide a hardware video encoder for streaming or recording.

Premiere guidance illustrates why VRAM figures need context. Adobe’s requirements for Premiere version 26.0, last updated September 29, 2026, recommend 8 GB of GPU memory for Windows. Adobe’s separate recommendations page says a GPU with at least 4 GB. Puget Systems’ specialist Premiere guide recommends VRAM by sequence resolution: 4 GB for 1080p, 8 GB for 4K, 12 GB for 6K, and 16 GB or more for 8K-plus, with more for multistream sequences. These are different recommendations for different contexts, not a universal rule for every game or creative application. Do not choose a card by its memory figure alone. Compare its measured performance in your games and applications, confirm the software supports the acceleration you need, and check the card’s physical and power compatibility with the rest of the PC.
What CPU makes sense for gaming and creation?
The CPU affects game performance and creative tasks, but the evidence does not support one ideal core count for every mixed-use PC. Adobe’s Premiere recommendations call for at least eight cores and identify Intel Quick Sync as useful for decoding and playback of H.264 and HEVC on supported systems. Puget Systems notes that Premiere performance depends on the task and that adding theoretical cores does not always improve results.

Compare tested CPU performance in the games and applications you actually use. For video work, include support for the codecs and decoding features in your workflow rather than treating core count as the only buying criterion. Adobe and Puget’s guidance applies to Premiere, not automatically to all creative software.
How much RAM do you need for gaming and video editing?
Memory needs depend on the project and on what else is open. For Premiere version 26.0, Adobe lists 8 GB as the Windows minimum, 16 GB for HD media, and 32 GB or more for 4K-and-higher media. Adobe’s separate recommendations page says 32 GB or more for Windows or Intel-based Mac systems.
Puget Systems’ specialist Premiere guidance is higher: it describes 64 GB as its general minimum and gives these resolution-based recommendations. These figures are guidance for Premiere projects, not a universal gaming baseline.

Adobe’s and Puget Systems’ figures differ because they describe different recommendation contexts. Use the guidance that best matches your media and project complexity, and allow for other programs running at the same time. The figures are not a substitute for checking the requirements of your own software.

For Premiere, Adobe recommends a fast internal SSD for the application and cache, plus an additional high-speed drive for media. This separates the software and cache workload from source files and project media. Choose capacity according to your game library, source footage, working files, cache, and archive; the cited guidance does not establish one capacity that suits everyone.
For network storage workflows in Premiere version 26.0, Adobe specifies 1 Gigabit Ethernet for HD and 10 Gigabit Ethernet for shared 4K workflows. These are workflow-specific recommendations, not requirements for a gaming-only PC. See Adobe’s Premiere requirements.

Do you need a separate GPU for streaming and gaming?
Not necessarily. OBS says hardware encoders shift video encoding to a specialized component and generally reduce CPU load. OBS lists NVIDIA NVENC, AMD AMF, and Intel Quick Sync support, with compatibility depending on hardware generation and software support. Check the current OBS support for the exact GPU or processor and encoder before buying; the encoder names alone do not make one brand the right choice for every build. A compatible encoder does not guarantee that the whole PC can stream or record at your chosen settings. OBS says CPU needs vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity, and states: “Having a compatible system does not guarantee that it is capable of streaming or recording using OBS Studio.” The statement appears in OBS Project’s System Requirements, dated August 25, 2021. OBS warns that a game and OBS can compete for GPU resources. If performance is poor, use the symptoms as a prompt to test settings rather than assuming a particular component must be replaced. OBS’s troubleshooting suggestions include:

- Limit the game’s frame rate so it does not use more GPU capacity than necessary.
- Lower the game’s graphics settings.
- Reduce OBS output settings.
Change settings methodically and check whether the stream or recording and the game improve. These are troubleshooting options, not proof that a GPU upgrade—or any one upgrade—will fix every case. See OBS’s encoding performance troubleshooting guide.
How to compare complete PC options
Compare complete configurations against the same workload rather than ranking parts in isolation. For each option, check:
- Measured CPU and GPU performance in your named games and creative applications.
- Performance at your target display resolution, frame rate, and settings.
- System RAM and GPU memory against your media resolution and project complexity.
- Codec decoding or acceleration and the supported hardware encoder, if you edit, stream, or record video.
- Storage speed and capacity for applications, cache, active media, and games.
- Compatibility among the motherboard, processor, memory, GPU, power supply, and case.
- Total system cost against your budget.
Without named games, settings, resolution, budget, and current benchmarks, a specific parts list or frame-rate promise would not be meaningful. Hardware prices and availability also vary, so use current local pricing and benchmarks for the exact components you are considering.
