In 2026, humanoid robots are an emerging option for bounded factory and warehouse tasks—not a proven, interchangeable workforce or a drop-in replacement for conventional automation. Public programs range from feasibility studies and scenario tests to completed pilots and planned rollouts. For an operations leader, the practical question is whether a specific task, at a specific site, can be done safely and reliably enough to justify a pilot.
What the public examples show—and what they do not
Companies have announced real industrial and warehouse programs, but the announcements describe different stages and tasks. A feasibility study, a pilot, and a multiyear rollout plan are not equivalent evidence of routine, scaled performance.

| Program | Reported stage and scope | What the announcement establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Hexagon and Schaeffler | A 2025 pilot preceded a planned seven-year deployment of at least 1,000 AEON robots across Schaeffler’s global factory network. | The figure is a company-announced rollout plan, not a count of robots already deployed. The described work includes machine loading and unloading and inspection. Hexagon’s announcement, 22 April 2026. |
| POSCO Group | Feasibility-stage proof of concept for steel-product logistics management at a steelworks. | This is an assessment of a defined logistics use case, not evidence of a completed broad deployment. POSCO Group’s announcement, 5 February 2026. |
| Accenture, Vodafone Procure & Connect, and SAP | Warehouse pilot involving scenario testing and integration work. | The account describes a path from simulation and training toward warehouse deployment, including SAP data integration; it does not establish general performance across warehouse workflows. Accenture’s announcement, 22 April 2026. |
| BMW Group, Plant Leipzig | Pilot experience with a humanoid robot in a factory setting. | BMW describes site measures including barriers or partitions and improved 5G coverage. These are deployment details from this pilot, not universal requirements for every robot or facility. BMW Group’s 2026 account. |
Together, the examples show task-specific activity: machine tending and inspection, warehouse workflow scenarios, and steel-product logistics planning. They do not show that humanoids can competently handle every task in a facility or that one vendor’s result transfers unchanged to another site.
Operational figures need context
Agility Robotics reported in September 2026 that Digit had accumulated more than 65,000 hours of operation and that it had announced more than $300 million in multi-year customer orders subject to contractual milestones. These are company-reported figures: operating hours alone do not disclose task success, uptime, quality, or conditions, and orders subject to milestones are not proof of completed deployments or realized performance. Agility Robotics’ announcement, 15 September 2026.

For scale context, Hyundai Motor Group reported that its Stretch warehouse robot had unloaded more than 20 million boxes since its 2023 launch. Stretch is a warehouse robot, not the humanoid Atlas; that figure should not be treated as a humanoid-robot result. Hyundai Motor Group’s announcement, January 2026.
How to decide whether a task is a good candidate
Start with the work, not the robot. A humanoid form may be worth evaluating when a task requires mobility and manipulation in a space designed around people or existing equipment. That is a reason to test fit, not proof that a humanoid is better than a fixed arm, an autonomous mobile robot, a conveyor, or redesigning the process.

- Choose one bounded task. Describe its start and finish, objects handled, work area, handoffs, and the situations that require human judgment or intervention.
- Record the current baseline. Measure cycle time, quality, labor involved, ergonomic or safety burden, exceptions, and variability across shifts and operating conditions.
- Compare practical alternatives. Ask whether the humanoid’s ability to move or use existing workspaces creates enough value to justify its added integration and support needs. Compare against task redesign and conventional automation as well as doing nothing.
- Map dependencies. Identify interactions with machines, conveyors, people, warehouse or production systems, data platforms, charging or service arrangements, and network coverage.
- Set acceptance criteria before testing. Define target task quality, uptime, safe behavior, exception recovery, and response times for maintenance and support. Include explicit stop conditions for unsafe behavior, repeated quality failures, or unreliable recovery.
Use actual site conditions and representative edge cases in the evaluation. A successful demonstration in a prepared scenario is not by itself evidence that the system will handle normal variation, blocked paths, unusual objects, or process changes.

Review the physical site
Assess access routes, work zones, pedestrian interaction, obstacles, lighting, surfaces, and the space needed for safe operation and intervention. BMW’s Leipzig pilot account describes barriers or partitions and improved 5G coverage, illustrating that a pilot can involve site changes rather than simply placing a robot into an unchanged workflow.

Plan integration and connectivity
Determine how the robot will receive work, report task status, handle exceptions, and exchange data with production or warehouse systems. The Accenture-led warehouse pilot describes integration from simulation and training through deployment and SAP data. Treat that as an example of integration scope; the specific interfaces and effort required at your site need to be established for your systems.
Train on representative work
Training and validation should reflect the actual station and its variation. Hexagon says Schaeffler’s Humanoid Gym replicates industrial workstations so robots can practice and validate tasks before deployment. Ask who maintains task behavior, how updates are tested, and how a changed process or station is revalidated before production use. Hexagon’s account, 19 August 2026.

Involve the right teams
- Operations: owns the task definition, baseline, workflow changes, and acceptance thresholds.
- Safety and worker representatives: review hazards, human interaction, access controls, training, and stop procedures.
- IT and OT: assess connectivity, data flows, system access, security, and support ownership.
- Facilities and engineering: identify physical changes, utilities, layout constraints, and maintenance access.
- Integrator and vendor: clarify commissioning, task updates, recovery procedures, service coverage, and responsibility when the system fails.
Validate the pilot before considering scale
Run the pilot against agreed criteria in the intended environment, and record failures as carefully as successful cycles. A useful evaluation distinguishes robot performance from conditions that were held constant or handled by people behind the scenes.
- Task performance: completion rate, quality, cycle time, and consistency, measured for the defined task and operating conditions.
- Availability and recovery: uptime, downtime causes, frequency of human intervention, and time to resume after exceptions.
- Safety: behavior around people and equipment, effectiveness of safeguards, incident and near-miss reporting, and adherence to site procedures.
- Integration: correct work assignment and status reporting, behavior when data or connectivity is interrupted, and recovery from upstream or downstream delays.
- Maintainability: service response, parts and support needs, task-update process, and the skills required from site staff.
Set the measurement period, task mix, shift coverage, and treatment of failures in advance. Require evidence from the exact task and operating conditions under consideration; vendor orders, shipment figures, forecasts, and announced rollout counts do not substitute for site-level results.

Build the business case from site evidence
Do not infer return on investment from a planned fleet size, cumulative operating hours, or customer orders. A defensible business case needs a site-specific total-cost and service model alongside measured task results. Account for integration and facility changes, supervision, maintenance, downtime, training, safety controls, and any process redesign—not just the robot purchase or lease.
Compare the verified cost and performance with the current process and realistic alternatives. The public announcements discussed here do not provide a standardized, independently audited cross-vendor set of uptime, task success, throughput, total cost, labor cost, and payback figures. Company statements can identify programs and reported experience, but they do not establish independently validated economics or prove that a planned rollout has occurred in full.
What a prudent 2026 decision looks like
For most operations leaders, the evidence supports evaluating a narrow, well-defined use case—not assuming facility-wide readiness. Proceed only when the task is suitable, site and systems requirements are understood, workers and safety teams are involved, and the pilot has measurable acceptance and stop criteria. Scale only after the target workflow meets those criteria and a site-specific cost and support model makes sense.
