OpenXR gives a Unity VR game a standards-based route to XR devices through Unity’s OpenXR provider plug-in. It can help developers reuse code built on Unity’s shared XR interfaces, but it does not make every headset support the same features or guarantee that one build will run unchanged everywhere.
What OpenXR changes in a Unity project
OpenXR is an open, royalty-free standard developed by Khronos to help applications target a range of AR and VR devices. Unity exposes it as a provider plug-in: developers install and enable OpenXR through XR Plug-in Management rather than treating it as a universal switch that automatically makes a game compatible with all headsets. Unity’s OpenXR Plugin manual lists OpenXR package version 1.16.1 for Unity Editor 6000.0; that listing is specific to that editor release, not a recommendation for every Unity version.
Unity’s XR architecture separates application-facing features from device-provider implementations. Providers implement common subsystem interfaces, and Unity Engine or package APIs expose those capabilities to game code. When a feature uses those shared interfaces, it may be reusable across providers and similar platforms. The boundary is capability: a provider or device that does not support a feature cannot supply it. See Unity’s XR architecture documentation.
What OpenXR does—and does not—mean for compatibility
OpenXR is a common way for applications to communicate with supported XR runtimes; it is not proof that every OpenXR-capable headset exposes identical input, tracking, or other features to a Unity game. Compatibility depends on the Unity provider, the runtime, the target device, and the particular features the game needs.

- Potentially reusable: game features that rely on common Unity XR interfaces and are supported by the providers and devices you target.
- Still platform-dependent: features, input, or device capabilities that are absent from a particular provider or headset.
- Not established by the standard alone: a complete device-by-device feature matrix or a guarantee that one build runs unchanged across all headsets.
Plan around the actual target devices and verify their required capabilities instead of assuming that selecting OpenXR settles compatibility.
How to enable OpenXR and validate a build
- In Unity, install and open XR Plug-in Management, then select the relevant build target and enable the OpenXR provider for that target. XR Plug-in Management handles provider loading, initialization, settings, and build support. Unity’s Unity 6 XR Plug-in Management manual lists package version 4.5.3 for Editor 6000.0; package versions depend on the editor release.
- Configure the provider and the features your game requires, then check that the target runtime and device support them. The provider selection is project configuration; it does not substitute for testing the game on its intended targets.
- Open Project Validation in XR Plug-in Management and review the rules for the selected platform. Unity groups checks by platform; errors block builds, while warnings identify issues that do not. Use the available Fix or Edit action when a rule provides one.
- Build for the intended target and confirm the provider and runtime behavior on the target device.
When a project has more than one XR provider
A Unity project can include multiple providers. Enabled providers are included for the active build target, and at runtime Unity tries providers in the order shown in XR Plug-in Management; the list is alphabetical by default. Therefore, enabling OpenXR in a project with other providers does not, by itself, establish which provider will be selected first.

Unity documents three ways to control provider selection: disable XR initialization at startup and choose in application logic, sort providers with a custom build script, or enable only the intended provider before building. The right choice depends on whether the project needs runtime selection or can use a provider fixed at build time. See Unity’s provider configuration documentation.

- Device and operating system: confirm the target is supported by the provider and runtime you intend to use.
- Required capabilities: verify that the specific input and XR features used by the game are available on that provider and device.
- Unity compatibility: use package versions compatible with the project’s Unity Editor release rather than copying version numbers from documentation for a different release.
- Provider selection: check which providers are enabled for the build target and their loading order if several are present.
- Build readiness: resolve relevant Project Validation errors and assess warnings before building.
OpenXR can reduce provider-specific differences for code built on Unity’s shared XR interfaces. The amount of adaptation still required is determined by the capabilities and configuration of the platforms the game actually targets.
