NVIDIA DLSS is a suite of AI-powered graphics features for GeForce RTX GPUs—not one universal upscaling switch. Super Resolution reconstructs a higher-resolution image from lower-resolution frames; Frame Generation creates extra displayed frames; Ray Reconstruction targets ray-traced scenes; and DLAA applies AI-assisted anti-aliasing at native resolution. What you see and feel depends on the feature, game, settings, and RTX generation.
What does NVIDIA DLSS do?
DLSS stands for Deep Learning Super Sampling. NVIDIA describes it as a suite of neural-rendering technologies that can reconstruct images, generate frames, and process ray-traced scenes. The features solve different problems, so enabling DLSS in a game may mean choosing among several distinct options rather than turning on a single effect.

Super Resolution: reconstructing a higher-resolution image
Super Resolution (SR) is the feature most people mean by AI upscaling. Instead of rendering every image at the display’s full output resolution and then enlarging a finished image, it starts from lower-resolution game frames and uses motion information and data from earlier frames to reconstruct a higher-resolution output. NVIDIA’s explanation is that “DLSS samples multiple lower-resolution images and uses motion data and feedback from prior frames to construct high-quality images.” NVIDIA’s DLSS page and its developer documentation describe the feature.
That reconstruction can improve performance because the game renders fewer pixels directly, but the result is not simply a copy of native-resolution rendering. It may differ in fine detail, edge definition, clarity during motion, or temporal stability.

Frame Generation: adding displayed frames
Frame Generation (FG) uses AI to create additional frames between game-rendered frames. More displayed frames can make motion look smoother, but generated frames are not the same as frames rendered by the game engine. They do not mean the game is simulating the world or sampling your inputs at the multiplied displayed frame rate. NVIDIA says Frame Generation works with Reflex, its latency-reduction technology; frame rate and input responsiveness are related but distinct, and no universal responsiveness gain follows from a higher displayed number.
Multi Frame Generation: more generated frames on RTX 50 Series
Multi Frame Generation (MFG) is a newer, feature-specific capability for RTX 50 Series GPUs. NVIDIA describes it as generating up to five additional frames per rendered frame, a maximum 6X multiplier. That figure is a stated capability, not a guarantee that every supported game or PC will produce that output or feel equally responsive.
Ray Reconstruction: processing ray-traced scenes
Ray Reconstruction (RR) uses AI to reconstruct pixels in ray-traced scenes and replace traditional hand-tuned denoisers. It is intended to improve the handling of ray-traced lighting and image data; it is not a general resolution-scaling setting.

DLAA: anti-aliasing at native resolution
Deep Learning Anti-Aliasing (DLAA) uses the DLSS Super Resolution technology at native resolution to reduce jagged edges. Unlike SR’s performance-oriented lower-resolution input, DLAA emphasizes image quality through anti-aliasing rather than rendering below the selected output resolution to gain performance.
How can DLSS change a game’s image?
With Super Resolution, the reconstructed output can look different from both the lower-resolution input and a native-resolution render. Edge definition, fine textures, and small details may vary; fast movement can also affect perceived clarity and stability. Results depend on the game, SR mode, GPU, output resolution, model, and what is happening in the scene, so there is no universal image-quality ranking that applies to every DLSS version or setting.
NVIDIA’s January 2026 DLSS 4.5 announcement shows vendor-selected comparisons of earlier-model examples with ghosting on fast-moving objects, jagged edges, and shimmer, alongside examples NVIDIA says show improvements with DLSS 4.5. Those are NVIDIA’s demonstrations, not independent tests or a guarantee that every game and scene will improve in the same way. NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 announcement provides the examples.

Frame Generation affects the cadence and number of displayed frames. It can make motion look smoother, but a generated frame is not a new game-rendered frame, and the displayed frame rate alone does not tell you how responsive controls will feel. NVIDIA identifies Reflex as working alongside Frame Generation to help maintain responsiveness; that vendor description is not an independent latency measurement.

NVIDIA’s current feature matrix lists the following GeForce RTX generations. The game must also implement the feature, so check the game’s graphics settings and NVIDIA’s current DLSS game and feature information before relying on a particular option.

| Super Resolution | RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 Series |
| Ray Reconstruction | RTX 20, 30, 40, and 50 Series |

In a January 14, 2026 announcement, NVIDIA said DLSS 4.5 Super Resolution was available in over 400 games and apps, and DLSS 4 Multi Frame Generation in over 250. Those are NVIDIA’s counts as of that date, not independently audited or live totals. NVIDIA’s January 14, 2026 announcement gives the dated figures.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you choose DLSS settings?
Start with the result you want, then compare the available options in the game. SR modes trade the resolution rendered by the game against the reconstructed output and performance. DLAA keeps the output at native resolution and focuses on anti-aliasing. Frame Generation targets smoother displayed motion rather than reducing the game’s underlying rendering workload in the same way as SR.
- For more performance: try a Super Resolution mode, then judge detail and stability at your normal output resolution and in motion—not just in a still screenshot.
- For image quality at native resolution: consider DLAA if the game offers it and performance is sufficient.
- For smoother displayed motion: consider Frame Generation on a supported GPU and game, while keeping responsiveness and the rendered frame rate in mind.
- For ray-traced image processing: look for Ray Reconstruction in a game that supports it; it is separate from general upscaling.
NVIDIA’s January 2026 guidance says the NVIDIA app can override DLSS model presets in supported games. NVIDIA also says RTX 20 and 30 Series GPUs lack native FP8 support, so DLSS 4.5 Models M and L can have a heavier performance impact on those cards; NVIDIA suggests Model K may offer a preferable performance/image-quality balance for those users. This advice is specific to NVIDIA’s DLSS 4.5 model guidance, not a universal setting recommendation for all DLSS features. NVIDIA’s January 2026 guidance covers the model options.

Does DLSS make games look worse?
Not necessarily, but it can change the image. SR reconstructs detail from lower-resolution input, so its output may differ from native rendering and can show artifacts or less stable detail in some scenes. Conversely, some players may prefer its image or performance trade-off in a particular game. Frame Generation chiefly alters displayed motion, while RR and DLAA have different roles. The useful comparison is the specific game and setting at your own resolution, not the DLSS label by itself.
Do you need to buy anything to use DLSS?
The enabling hardware is a compatible GeForce RTX graphics card, and each feature has its own generation requirements. If you already have an RTX card that supports the feature you want, there may be no need to upgrade. Before buying a card, verify the exact DLSS feature and game you care about against NVIDIA’s compatibility information and the game’s settings. A high-refresh-rate display can be useful context for high displayed frame rates, but it is not a DLSS requirement.
