Nike’s turnaround has not yet returned the company to growth: in the first quarter of fiscal 2027, revenue fell 4% year over year, and Nike expects full-year revenue to decline by a high-single-digit percentage. Gross margin improved and operating expenses fell, but net income also declined. The results point to better cost control—not a broad recovery in demand. Nike’s latest outlook offers no specific quarter for a return to growth.
What Nike’s latest results show
For the quarter ended August 31, 2026, Nike reported revenue of $11.2 billion, down 4% year over year, or 5% on a currency-neutral basis. NIKE Brand revenue was $11.0 billion, down 4% on both bases. North American growth partly offset declines in Greater China and EMEA, leaving the overall picture uneven rather than a broad-based rebound. Nike’s FY2027 first-quarter results report these figures.

| FY2027 Q1 measure | Result | What it indicates |
|---|---|---|
| Total revenue | $11.2 billion; down 4% reported and 5% currency-neutral | Sales were still shrinking. |
| Gross margin | 42.8%; up 60 basis points | Margin improved, primarily with lower warehousing and logistics costs. |
| Net income | $0.7 billion; down 2% | Better margin and expense control had not yet lifted bottom-line growth. |
| Diluted EPS | $0.48 | Reported earnings per share for the quarter. |
| Selling and administrative expense | $3.9 billion; down 3% | Expenses were lower year over year. |
| Operating overhead | $2.7 billion; down 6% | Cost restraint supported profitability. |
Channel performance was also mixed. NIKE Direct revenue fell 8% reported and 9% currency-neutral. Within Direct, Nike Brand Digital fell 13% and owned-store revenue fell 5%. Wholesale revenue was $6.8 billion, down 1%. Converse revenue was $263 million, down 28%. The figures distinguish weakness in Nike’s owned channels and Converse from the smaller decline in wholesale; they do not establish that any one channel has turned around.
Why improving margins do not yet prove a recovery
Gross margin is the share of sales left after the cost of goods sold. It can improve even when sales are falling—for example, when logistics costs decline—so the 60-basis-point increase to 42.8% is a positive profitability signal, not evidence by itself that demand has recovered. In the same quarter, revenue fell 4%, net income fell 2%, and diluted EPS was $0.48.

The distinction is especially important when looking back at fiscal 2026. For the full year, Nike reported revenue of $46.4 billion, flat on a reported basis and down 2% currency-neutral. Gross margin was 42.9%, up 20 basis points, while net income fell 3%. Taken together, the full-year figures show modest margin improvement alongside weak sales and lower profit.
Fiscal 2026 Q4 contained an unusual tariff-related boost
Nike’s FY2026 fourth-quarter gross margin rose 890 basis points to 49.2%, but the company attributed approximately 900 basis points of benefit to the expected recovery of U.S. IEEPA tariffs. Diluted EPS of $0.72 included $0.52 related to that expected recovery. This makes the quarter’s headline margin and EPS increases a poor standalone measure of recurring operating improvement. Nike’s FY2026 fourth-quarter and full-year results describe the tariff-related effects.

When could Nike return to growth?
Nike’s clearest published timing signal is its FY2027 outlook: it expects revenue to decline by a high-single-digit percentage for the year. That guidance does not name a quarter in which growth will resume. The available results and outlook therefore support saying the turnaround remains delayed, but not assigning a date to a recovery or claiming how far behind a prior schedule it is.
Nike’s adjusted diluted EPS outlook is $1.15 to $1.35, excluding approximately $0.15 of Pace-related restructuring expense. Adjusted EPS is a non-GAAP measure, so it should not be confused with reported earnings or read as a revenue-growth forecast. The outlook also does not cancel out the expected sales decline.

What Nike is changing—and what Pace can establish
Nike says its Sport Offense strategy is building momentum in priority sports, while it is taking action to reposition NIKE Sportswear, Jordan Brand, and Greater China. CEO Elliott Hill said the company has “more work to do” in those businesses and is taking deliberate actions to strengthen them over the long term. That admission, alongside the regional and brand results, makes clear that the company sees important parts of its business as unfinished work.
Nike introduced Pace as an operating-model transformation designed to accelerate and scale Sport Offense. Its stated elements include modernizing the global supply chain, establishing a campus in India to build enterprise capabilities, realigning to three geographies, and streamlining the organization.

Nike estimates that Pace will produce approximately $2.5 billion in cumulative savings through FY2031. It also estimates approximately $1.0 billion in pretax charges through FY2031, in addition to approximately $0.3 billion of severance costs recognized in FY2026, and expects approximately $0.3 billion of charges in FY2027. The savings estimate is before charges and future reinvestment; Nike says actual amounts may differ materially and depend on assumptions, including local-law requirements. These are company estimates, not savings already delivered, and they do not establish when sales will recover. Nike’s forward-looking statements identify risks including delay, disruption, and failure to achieve expected benefits. The company’s release provides the Pace details and qualifications.

How to read the turnaround from here
- Track sales separately from margin. Rising gross margin is encouraging, but revenue and net income need to stabilize or grow before the figures indicate a broader recovery.
- Keep reported and currency-neutral growth distinct. In FY2027 Q1, Nike reported revenue down 4% and currency-neutral revenue down 5%; these are different measures.
- Watch channels and regions for breadth. North American growth did not offset weakness in Greater China and EMEA, while Direct, digital, and Converse all declined.
- Separate recurring performance from unusual items and estimates. The FY2026 Q4 tariff-related benefit affected margin and EPS; Pace savings remain projections, and adjusted EPS is non-GAAP.
- Treat FY2027 guidance as the near-term benchmark. Nike currently expects a high-single-digit revenue decline, rather than a return to growth.
Nike describes progress in performance products and cost discipline, but its latest reported quarter and its own full-year outlook remain consistent with a delayed, incomplete turnaround. The evidence supports cautious attention to margin gains—not a claim that growth has returned.
