What n98-magerun2 Tests Cover—and What They Don’t

n98-magerun2 documents tests for selected renderers and edge cases, plus testing across multiple PHP versions and several operating systems. Its official materials do not publish an overall coverage percentage or a complete command-to-test map.

n98-magerun2 has documented tests for selected components and edge cases, and its project says it automatically tests across multiple PHP versions and runs on Linux distributions and macOS. Those facts are useful evidence of testing, but they do not show that every command or Magento setup is tested end to end. The project’s reviewed materials do not publish an overall coverage percentage or a complete command-to-test map.

What n98-magerun2 does

The official n98-magerun2 repository describes it as a command-line tool for Magento 2, Mage-OS, and Adobe Commerce. Its command reference spans operational areas such as admin, cache, configuration, customers, databases, development, EAV, indexing, installation, integrations, routes, scripts, and system maintenance.

Because the tool covers many different operations, examples of tests for a few components should not be read as evidence that the same depth of testing exists for every command.

What the published test examples cover

The official release history records unit tests added for CSV, XML, JSON, JSON-array, and YAML renderers. It also mentions a BinaryString test and tests for particular ProjectComposer cases involving malformed or missing files.

These examples show attention to output formatting and selected data-handling and error paths. They are examples from release notes, not a full inventory of the repository’s tests or a map of tests to user-facing commands.

What the project says about PHP and operating systems

The project’s compatibility documentation states: “Our tools are automatically tested against multiple PHP versions and run on various Linux distributions and macOS.” This is a broad description of the project’s testing environments. It does not specify that every command runs on every PHP and operating-system combination.

The same documentation says Microsoft Windows is not fully supported and notes that some commands, including db:dump and install, are unavailable there. A platform-level testing statement should not be confused with uniform command availability or coverage across platforms.

What the available evidence does not establish

  • Overall code coverage: The reviewed official materials do not give a line- or branch-coverage percentage.
  • Command-by-command coverage: They do not provide a complete mapping from each documented command to its tests.
  • End-to-end behavior: The cited release-note examples do not establish that every command is exercised against a real Magento installation.
  • Production compatibility: A project test suite cannot, by itself, validate a particular store’s extensions, data, hosting environment, or production configuration.

Accordingly, claims that “all commands are tested,” that the suite guarantees compatibility, or that the project has a particular coverage percentage go beyond what these sources establish.

How to judge a specific release or CI run

For a more precise assessment, inspect the repository’s current test configuration and the CI runs for the version you plan to use. Compare the details those sources actually expose:

  • Which PHP versions and operating systems are included in the run.
  • Whether the checks are unit, integration, or end-to-end tests.
  • Which Magento or Mage-OS compatibility range is addressed.
  • Whether the run publishes coverage results.

Do not assume that every run reports all of these dimensions. The compatibility page gives a broad testing statement; an individual workflow may provide more specific details. The project README’s contributor guidance covers cloning the repository, running composer install, and building the PHAR with ./build.sh, but it does not specify a test command or test-suite setup. Check the current test configuration rather than treating the build steps as instructions for running tests.
