It is commonly called mobile check deposit and is one consumer form of remote deposit capture (RDC). Submission is not the same as final acceptance or immediate access to the money.
How mobile remote deposit works
You use your financial institution’s mobile banking app to capture the check images it requests and send them for processing. The institution receives digital information from a deposit document captured away from a branch; the phone-photo workflow is one way to do that. The Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) describes RDC as a way for customers to deposit a check electronically without visiting a branch or using an ATM (FDIC, “Banking at the Speed of Technology”; FDIC, “Risk Management of Remote Deposit Capture”).

The app’s instructions and your institution’s account terms determine which checks you can submit, how to photograph and endorse them, and what happens after submission. RDC can make deposits more convenient, but it also carries risks beyond those of delivering a check in person, as the FDIC notes in its broader discussion of the system.
What mobile deposit does—and does not—mean
- It is a way to submit a check: you send images through your bank or credit union’s app instead of handing the paper check to a teller or depositing it at an ATM.
- It does not guarantee that every check is eligible: institutions set their own rules for check types and submission requirements.
- It does not guarantee immediate access to the money: a submitted or pending deposit may not yet be available to spend. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) warns that the timetable for a check deposited by taking a photo may differ by institution. See its guidance on how long a bank or credit union can hold deposited funds.
Check your institution’s rules before depositing
There is no single standard mobile-deposit limit, eligible-check list, cutoff time, endorsement phrase, or guaranteed availability date established by the cited consumer guidance. Check your bank or credit union’s current app instructions and account terms for:
#1 Best Overall
- Check Scanner with Printing Capability
- Whether mobile deposit is available for your account and which checks are eligible.
- Any per-check or daily deposit limits and fees.
- The required endorsement wording and any additional instructions for the check’s back.
- The submission cutoff time, expected processing, and funds-availability policy.
The CFPB’s general funds-availability guidance does not promise that the same timetable applies to a check submitted by mobile app. Treat the date and status shown by your institution as more relevant to your deposit than a general rule of thumb.
Endorse the check as your app directs
An endorsement is the writing or signature on the back of a check. The CFPB explains that signing the back and writing “for deposit only” is a restrictive endorsement intended to limit the check to deposit into the payee’s account (CFPB, “What does it mean for a check to be indorsed ‘for deposit only’?”). That explanation does not make the phrase a universal mobile-deposit requirement. Follow the exact wording and steps in your own institution’s app. The CFPB’s online and mobile banking tips for beginners also advise checking the institution’s mobile-deposit rules.

Keep the paper check until the deposit is settled
Record which check you submitted so you do not accidentally deposit it again. Keep the paper copy until the deposit has posted and any hold imposed by your institution has expired. Then destroy it; the FDIC recommends using a high-quality paper shredder after verifying the deposit. The CFPB likewise advises keeping the check until it is no longer pending and applicable holds have expired (FDIC guidance; CFPB guidance).
