For the Thriller-era studio vocals, Michael Jackson was recorded by engineer Bruce Swedien using the original Shure SM7. Swedien recalled first trying a Neumann U 47, then choosing the SM7 because it suited Jackson’s voice. That account identifies the SM7—not the later SM7B.

Which microphone was used for Michael Jackson’s Thriller vocals?

The best-supported answer for the Thriller recording context is the Shure SM7. Shure’s account of the microphone’s history connects Swedien’s use of the SM7 with Jackson’s vocals on the album, and a 1983 Mix interview also describes Swedien using a Shure SM-7 on Jackson’s vocals. Shure’s history of the SM7 line and the 1983 interview in Mix support that specific studio answer.

Why did Bruce Swedien choose the SM7?

Swedien recalled beginning with a Neumann U 47 before switching to the SM7. He described the choice as a response to how the microphone worked with Jackson’s voice: “It just fit that voice and in my ear it was the only possible way to record him so I used my Shure SM7 which is a dynamic mic and it sounded just GLORIOUS!” Swedien’s interview with Sweetwater contains the account.

That is Swedien’s explanation of his recording decision, not evidence that the microphone alone created the finished vocal sound. The claim is about a microphone choice within a studio recording process.

Is the SM7 the same as the SM7B?

No. The documented Thriller-era model is the original Shure SM7. The SM7B is a later model in the same product line, so calling it the microphone used on those recordings substitutes a different model name. Shure says the SM7 was introduced in 1973; its product history distinguishes the original SM7 from the later SM7B. Shure’s product-history account provides that distinction.

Does this mean Jackson used an SM7 throughout his career?

No. The available accounts establish the SM7 for the cited Thriller-era studio vocals. They do not establish that Jackson used it for every album, studio session, or live performance. The careful answer is therefore specific to this recording context rather than a claim about his entire career.
