What Materials Can Withstand the Heat of a Mars Landing?

NASA’s Mars 2020 landing system used PICA, SLA-561V and Acusil-II in different aeroshell locations. Here is how each material manages Mars entry heat and why no single material fits every lander.

NASA’s Mars 2020 aeroshell relied on three different thermal-protection materials, each assigned to a particular part of the vehicle: phenolic impregnated carbon ablator (PICA) on the tiled forward heat shield, SLA-561V on the backshell, and Acusil-II around the parachute closeout cone and backshell interface plate. They were not interchangeable coatings. Together, they were designed for an entry in which the forward shield was estimated to face about 2,370°F (1,300°C).

These materials survive by managing heat rather than simply resisting it like a household metal. PICA deliberately chars and erodes, carrying energy away; the backshell and interface materials provide protection suited to their own geometry and heating environment. The exact choice depends on a lander’s trajectory, size, pressure profile, and allowable mass.

Why a Mars landing generates so much heat

A Mars lander enters the atmosphere at high speed. As the aeroshell compresses carbon-dioxide-rich air in front of it, the gas becomes extremely hot and transfers energy to the vehicle. NASA Ames describes entry as dissipating about 90% of the approaching spacecraft’s kinetic energy and converting it to heat. That figure describes NASA’s Mars 2020 entry explanation; it is not a universal percentage for every spacecraft, trajectory, or atmospheric condition.

The popular phrase “friction heat” is incomplete. Skin friction contributes, but the compressed shock layer in front of the vehicle is a major source of heating. NASA’s Mars 2020 design work also considered radiative heating from carbon dioxide. Under the studied entry conditions, carbon-dioxide radiation was predicted to be a dominant heating source on the spacecraft’s rear. That finding is specific to the vehicle and trajectory analyzed, not a general rule that the backshell is always hotter than the heat shield.

Heating is also uneven. The nose and forward-facing surface directly encounter the strongest flow, while the backshell sits in separated, turbulent flow behind the vehicle. The parachute closeout cone and structural interface areas have different shapes, joints, insulation needs, and allowable temperatures. A practical thermal-protection system therefore uses several materials instead of asking one substance to perform everywhere.

The Mars 2020 material layout

NASA’s documented Mars 2020 configuration assigns each named material to a specific aeroshell region. The table shows the role and the protection mechanism established in NASA and JPL descriptions.

Material or system Installed location How it protects the vehicle What the published evidence establishes
PICA Tiled forward heat shield A lightweight carbon-fiber and polymeric-resin ablator gradually decomposes, chars, and erodes, carrying heat away from the underlying structure. Used on Mars 2020’s forward shield; the mission heat-shield exposure was estimated at about 2,370°F (1,300°C).
SLA-561V Backshell A heritage, honeycomb-based thermal-protection material selected for the backshell’s distinct heating and structural environment. Identified by NASA as the Mars 2020 backshell material; the available sources do not provide a single maximum temperature that applies independently of the mission.
Acusil-II Parachute closeout cone and backshell interface plate Provides localized thermal protection on components with their own shape, attachment, and insulation requirements. NASA’s technical description identifies these installation locations on the Mars 2020 aeroshell.
MEDLI2 Instrumentation embedded across the heat shield and backshell Measures the thermal and pressure environment; it is not a protective material. Collected data from 28 sensors to improve future robotic and crewed Mars entry designs.

The sources support this mission-specific configuration, not a ranking in which one material is “best” for every Mars spacecraft. A material that works on a broad forward shield may be unsuitable for a small interface plate, a backshell panel, or a future vehicle with a different entry speed.

How PICA survives the forward-shield environment

It is designed to ablate

PICA stands for phenolic impregnated carbon ablator. Carbon fibers form a lightweight structural framework, while a polymeric resin fills and binds the material. During entry, heat drives chemical decomposition in the resin. Gases produced by that decomposition flow outward through the porous material, and the exposed surface chars and recedes.

This is intentional material consumption. The ablator sacrifices its outer layers so the heat does not reach the vehicle’s pressure vessel or payload at the same rate. The process also carries energy away through chemical reactions and escaping gases. “Burns away” is therefore a useful shorthand, but it does not mean the entire shield suddenly catches fire; the response progresses through the material as the heat pulse develops.

Tiles make a large shield practical

Mars 2020 used PICA in tiles on the forward heat shield. Tiling lets engineers cover a curved, large-area surface while controlling thickness and accommodating manufacturing, inspection, and attachment requirements. Every seam, gap, fastener, and transition must be accounted for in the thermal design. The protective performance belongs to the integrated shield—not just to a sample of PICA considered in isolation.

Temperature is not a single material rating

JPL’s Mars 2020 landing press-kit estimate of about 2,370°F (about 1,300°C) describes the heat-shield exposure expected during that descent. It is not a universal “Mars landing temperature,” a guaranteed temperature at every point on the shield, or a maximum rating that can be transferred to another vehicle. Heating depends on speed, atmospheric density, angle of attack, nose radius, surface condition, and the duration of the entry pulse.

Why the backshell uses a different material

The backshell does not experience the same flow as the forward shield. It is carried behind the blunt body in a wake, but it still sees intense aerodynamic and radiative heating. The geometry, joints, equipment layout, and mass limits differ from those of the nose. NASA identifies SLA-561V, a heritage honeycomb-based thermal-protection material, for Mars 2020’s backshell.

Calling SLA-561V “heat-proof” would be misleading. Like other spacecraft thermal-protection systems, it is selected to keep the underlying structure within its allowable temperature during a defined heat pulse. Its suitability depends on thickness, attachment, local shape, insulation, and the entry trajectory. The available NASA descriptions identify its role but do not establish one stand-alone temperature limit that applies to every installation or mission.

What Acusil-II protects

Acusil-II was used on the parachute closeout cone and the backshell interface plate. These are localized parts of the aeroshell rather than the broad nose or backshell skin. The closeout cone must protect the parachute compartment during entry and then support the sequence in which the parachute is deployed. The interface plate connects or separates hardware while facing a thermal environment that can differ from neighboring panels.

Using a separate material in these areas allows engineers to meet local requirements without adding the mass or manufacturing complexity of making the entire backshell from one thick, uniform system. The NASA technical description establishes Acusil-II’s locations; it does not support treating it as a universal replacement for PICA or SLA-561V.

What MEDLI2 measured during entry

MEDLI2, the Mars Entry, Descent, and Landing Instrumentation 2 suite, placed 28 sensors across the heat shield and backshell of Mars 2020. The instruments recorded quantities such as temperature, heat flux, and pressure-related data during entry.

Those measurements matter because thermal models must predict a rapidly changing, three-dimensional environment. Data from one successful entry can reveal where predictions were conservative, where heating was concentrated, and how the backshell behaved in the wake. NASA says MEDLI2 data will help improve future robotic and crewed Mars entry-system designs. The sensors did not make the aeroshell heat-resistant; they documented what the existing protection experienced.

How engineers choose a Mars thermal-protection material

1. Define the entry trajectory

Engineers first establish entry speed, flight-path angle, angle of attack, atmospheric profile, vehicle mass, and nose shape. These variables determine the heat pulse and pressure loads. A material qualified for one trajectory cannot automatically be reused on another without analysis.

2. Map heating over the aeroshell

Computational fluid-dynamics and radiation models estimate convective and radiative heating across the forward shield, shoulder, backshell, seams, and hardware openings. Carbon-dioxide radiation is one example of a chemistry effect that must be included for Mars. The result is a local heat-load map rather than one temperature for the entire vehicle.

3. Match the protection mechanism to the location

Ablators such as PICA are attractive when controlled recession can absorb a large heat pulse at relatively low mass. Honeycomb-based systems such as SLA-561V may suit a backshell configuration with different structural and manufacturing requirements. Localized materials such as Acusil-II can protect cones and interface plates without duplicating the forward shield’s construction.

4. Add thickness, insulation, and attachment margins

Material selection is only the beginning. Engineers determine thickness, density, tile or panel layout, adhesive and fastener behavior, seam details, and the allowable temperature of the underlying structure. They also account for manufacturing variation, surface damage, aging, and uncertainties in atmospheric and aerodynamic predictions.

5. Test and instrument the design

Arc-jet testing, material characterization, structural tests, and flight instrumentation help validate the models. MEDLI2’s 28-sensor data set illustrates the value of measuring the real entry rather than relying only on preflight calculations.

Common misconceptions about Mars heat shields

“The hottest material wins.”

Thermal protection is a system problem, not a contest for the highest advertised temperature. A material must survive the correct heat flux and pressure history, attach reliably, fit the vehicle’s shape, and keep the payload within its temperature limits. A laboratory temperature result without the test duration, heating rate, atmosphere, thickness, and failure criterion says little about flight suitability.

“Ordinary steel or ceramic can replace an ablative shield.”

Metals and ceramics can be useful in spacecraft structures or specialized thermal-control parts, but the Mars 2020 sources do not support substituting ordinary steel, consumer ceramics, or heat-resistant fabric for the aeroshell’s qualified thermal-protection system. The shield must manage a high-energy entry pulse while remaining light enough for launch and landing.

“Mars has one fixed landing temperature.”

The approximately 2,370°F figure belongs to the Mars 2020 heat-shield estimate. Different entry speeds, vehicle sizes, trajectories, atmospheric conditions, and surface geometries produce different heating histories. Even on one vehicle, the forward shield, backshell, closeout cone, and interface plate do not experience identical temperatures.

“Ablation means the shield failed.”

For PICA, controlled ablation is the intended operating mode. The surface chars and recedes while protecting the structure behind it. Failure would mean recession, cracking, debonding, or heat transfer beyond the design allowance—not merely the loss of outer material.

What this means for future Mars landers

Future robotic and crewed vehicles may use PICA, SLA-561V, Acusil-II, other established systems, or new materials. The choice will depend on vehicle scale, entry energy, reusable-versus-sacrificial goals, manufacturing capacity, and the amount of flight data available. NASA’s thermal-protection work also includes woven and conformal approaches, showing that material architecture can evolve even when the basic requirement remains the same: control heat long enough to protect the vehicle.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

MEDLI2’s measurements are especially valuable for future designs because they connect predicted heating to a real Mars entry. They can improve uncertainty margins and help designers decide where a high-performance ablator is essential, where a heritage backshell system is adequate, and where a localized material is more efficient.

Bottom line for the Mars 2020 example

The clearest answer is not a single magic substance. Mars 2020 used a layered, location-specific strategy: PICA tiles on the forward heat shield to ablate through the main entry heat pulse, SLA-561V on the backshell for its different wake environment, and Acusil-II on the parachute closeout cone and backshell interface plate. NASA estimated about 2,370°F (1,300°C) at the heat shield during that descent, while 28 MEDLI2 sensors recorded the actual environment for future designs. Those facts explain why a Mars heat shield is an engineered aeroshell system rather than a coating that can be chosen from a generic list of heat-resistant materials.
