Massachusetts has deployed 14 orange mobile trailers to detect and warn about wrong-way drivers at unsignalized ramps that lack permanent detection infrastructure, according to supplier TAPCO. The trailers are one temporary tool within a larger state effort that also includes fixed detection systems, upgraded signs and pavement markings, and possible roadway redesigns.
How the mobile trailers are reported to work
TAPCO, the supplier, says each solar-powered unit carries detection equipment, video cameras and wrong-way signage. When it detects a vehicle entering a ramp in the wrong direction, the system activates LED-enhanced signs, records the event and sends real-time alerts, live video and images to traffic management centers, agency staff and law enforcement. TAPCO also says one field technician can deploy a trailer in minutes and relocate it as conditions change. These are the company’s descriptions; independent testing of the trailer’s performance is not established in the available reporting. (TAPCO)

The supplier says mobile coverage can be used temporarily during construction or detours, after a collision, when a fixed system is unavailable, or to gather information at a location where risk is uncertain. The 14 trailers are aimed at unsignalized ramps without permanent infrastructure; they are not the same as the fixed-system retrofits in MassDOT’s broader program.

In a June 17, 2026 announcement, MassDOT described a multi-year strategy for more than 500 high-risk locations. It said it planned to retrofit existing signalized intersections and mainline camera systems with wrong-way detection at approximately 430 locations, with installations scheduled for 2026 and 2027. Those approximately 430 planned retrofits are distinct from the 14 mobile trailers. (MassDOT / Governor’s Office)

- Long Range Detection – Next generation updateable IVT Filter and advanced anti-falsing circuitry intelligently reduces false alerts from blind spot monitoring systems and other vehicle avoidance systems.
- Early Warnings – Digital Signal Processing provides faster processing for all incoming laser gun signals and rapidly provides accurate alerts, making you aware of a threat before it is right in front of you.
- Everything You Need - The Cobra RAD 480i radar detector comes with a 12V vehicle power cord, suction cup car windshield mount, and a hook and loop fastener for dash mounting, for wherever the road takes you.
The state also listed measures beyond detection equipment: enhanced WRONG WAY and DO NOT ENTER signs, pavement markings, directional arrows and lighting. At locations without existing infrastructure, pilots are intended to collect information that can help officials determine whether more substantial engineering changes are needed, such as curb or island realignment, ramp reconfiguration or channelization.
A separate June 17, 2026 MassDOT board report said work at Route 128 and Route 35 in Danvers began June 15. Testing and training were to occur before full activation, with flashing warning signs operating during the test period. The report noted a fatal wrong-way crash there in December 2025; it is a dated status update, not confirmation of the system’s current activation status. (MassDOT Secretary’s Report to the Board)

What the pilot detections show—and what they do not
Boston 25 News reported that its review of MassDOT records found 294 wrong-way drivers detected at 16 pilot locations between 2022 and May 6, 2026. Of those detections, 168 (57%) were followed by drivers self-correcting, while 126 (43%) were not. The counts describe detections at those instrumented locations, not every wrong-way entry in Massachusetts, and they do not demonstrate that the systems reduced crashes. (Boston 25 News)

The same report listed 21 detections in 2022, 96 in 2023, 88 in 2024, 66 in 2025 and 23 through May 6, 2026. It also reported that Massachusetts identified 43 deadly wrong-way crashes from 2021 through May 6, 2026. These figures have different scopes and time periods: detections at 16 pilot sites are not a statewide count of wrong-way driving, and the deadly-crash figure covers a separate period.

Massachusetts Highway Administrator Jonathan Gulliver told Boston 25 that driver confusion is a major factor. He pointed to older ramp layouts where on-ramps and off-ramps sit close together, making it easier for a confused driver to choose the wrong route. The state’s planned combination of signs, markings, lighting, detection and, where warranted, physical redesign addresses more than the moment a vehicle enters a ramp: it also seeks to clarify the roadway layout and identify locations where geometry may contribute to risk.

What the national statistic means
TAPCO attributes to the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety a rise in fatal wrong-way crashes on U.S. divided highways from 278 in 2014 to 520 in 2023. This is a national statistic reported through the supplier, not a Massachusetts-only figure. It provides context for the seriousness of the problem but does not measure the effect of the Massachusetts trailers. (TAPCO, citing the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety)
