Meta had already announced feed-content tests in September 2024, but neither announcement establishes how much AI content users see today.
What Zuckerberg said about AI content in Facebook feeds
On Meta’s third-quarter 2024 earnings call, Zuckerberg said: “I think we’re going to add a whole new category of content, which is AI generated or AI summarized content, or existing content pulled together by AI in some way.” He also cautioned: “I don’t know if we know what’s exactly going to work really well yet, but some things are really promising.” Fortune reported the remarks on October 30, 2024.

That was a forecast about a possible direction for Meta’s feeds and an acknowledgment of experimentation—not a quantified promise that AI would make up all, or even most, of anyone’s feed. “AI slop” is a critical label used in the headline and some coverage; it was not Zuckerberg’s wording in the quoted remarks. 404 Media’s account of the call placed the comments in the context of Facebook’s shift from friends’ updates toward more creator and recommended content.
Meta had announced feed tests before the earnings call
On September 25, 2024, Meta said it was testing AI-generated content in Facebook and Instagram feeds. Its examples included images generated for users based on interests or current trends, with prompts that could let people take the content in a new direction. This establishes that Meta announced a test; it does not establish a universal rollout, the test’s present scale, or its effect on users. Meta’s announcement describes the examples and test.

- Call anyone, anywhere. Use apps like Messenger and WhatsApp to connect with friends and family—even if they don’t have a Meta Portal.

- Privacy by design. Easily disable the camera and microphone, or block the lens with the integrated camera cover.
Generated, summarized, and AI-assembled content are different
- AI-generated: material, such as an image, created by an AI system.
- AI-summarized: an existing item condensed or recast by AI.
- AI-assembled: existing material brought together in some way by AI.
Zuckerberg grouped all three as a potential feed category. His statement did not specify how these formats would be identified, ranked, or distributed.
What the announcement does—and does not—tell users
The September announcement and October earnings-call comments are evidence of tests and a stated future direction, not evidence of how much AI-generated content appears in feeds now. The available company announcements and reporting do not establish a current percentage, whether the specific test remains active in particular locations, or measurable effects on satisfaction, content quality, or time spent. A reliable answer to “How much AI content is in my feed?” therefore cannot be derived from these announcements.

AI advertising figures are not feed-content figures
Meta’s September 2024 announcement said more than 1 million advertisers had used its generative-AI advertising tools to create 15 million ads in the preceding month. Meta also reported that, on average, campaigns using its generative-AI ad features had an 11% higher click-through rate and a 7.6% higher conversion rate than campaigns that did not. These are Meta-reported advertising comparisons, not independent evaluations and not measures of the share or quality of ordinary feed posts. Meta’s announcement gives the figures and their advertising context.
Separately, executives said more than 1 million businesses were creating more than 15 million ads per month, as reported by 404 Media from the October 2024 call. That figure concerns business ads, not the prevalence of generated posts in users’ feeds. 404 Media reported the call’s advertising discussion.

Meta’s stated safeguards are not proof of uniform enforcement
Meta’s June 2024 account of its preparation for UK elections said its Community Standards and Ad Standards apply to AI-generated content. It described fact-checking and down-ranking content rated as altered, and said photorealistic AI images receive labels in specified circumstances. Those are Meta’s stated policies in the UK election context; the account is not an independent audit and does not establish how consistently safeguards operate worldwide or today. Meta’s UK election statement sets out that policy description.

In an essay published August 10, 2026, Zuckerberg promoted widely distributed personal AI and discussed Meta’s views on agents, open-source models, governance, and safety. That later statement shows subsequent company positioning; it does not establish how the 2024 feed test rolled out or what effect it had on users. Read Zuckerberg’s 2026 essay on Meta’s site.
