Viewers may subscribe to a 24/7 YouTube music stream because it reliably fits a listening routine—such as relaxing or focusing—and, for some, because the live stream and its chat feel like a shared place. The evidence supports those as plausible reasons, but it does not establish a single main reason or show how strongly any one factor converts viewers into subscribers.
Music that fits a mood or task gives people a reason to return
A continuous music stream can be useful without demanding full attention: someone might put on lo-fi beats to study, work, relax, or sleep. In a 2025 exploratory student study, respondents most often chose relaxing, focusing on tasks, and enjoying the music as their top lo-fi listening criteria. The paper also reported that 40 percent of its respondents used YouTube most frequently for lo-fi hip-hop. Utility can encourage repeated listening, but listening is not the same as subscribing. A person may use a stream as background audio without watching closely, joining chat, returning regularly, or choosing to subscribe. A stream’s musical fit and dependable availability may support a habit; the available evidence does not measure how much 24/7 availability itself changes subscription likelihood.

Knowing that a performance is live may add a sense of presence: viewers can feel that they are sharing a moment with someone rather than watching an equivalent prerecorded performance. A 2026 Journal of Marketing study comparing live and equivalent or identical prerecorded amateur music performances reports that perceived presence and social connection are linked to enjoyment, continued watching, and intentions to follow, subscribe, or join a fan community. That distinction matters for a 24/7 stream. Its music may be uploaded and looped rather than performed live in the ordinary sense; whether viewers experience it as “live” may depend on how the channel presents it and whether a social layer is active. The broader study makes presence a reasonable explanation to consider, not proof that liveness causes subscriptions to a particular station.
Chat can turn background listening into a shared room
YouTube describes live chat as a way for viewers and creators to interact in real time. Its Help guidance says, “Having a shared experience, like watching a live stream, helps build a deeper sense of community between creator and viewer.” It also says, “Live chat helps amplify that sense of community for viewers. They get to interact more, and have real time conversations with each other and their favorite creators.” These are YouTube’s descriptions of its feature and intended experience, not independent evidence that chat produces subscriptions in every genre. For a music channel, chat may give listeners a place to greet one another, discuss the music, or simply recognize familiar names. Some listeners may value that shared atmosphere; others may just want uninterrupted background sound. Research on eight YouTube music broadcasts during the 2020 COVID-19 lockdown examined social cohesion, intercultural understanding, and community resilience through comments. Its small, time-specific case study suggests that music broadcasts can have a social dimension, but it cannot establish how typical that is of current 24/7 stations. Atmosphere and fan connection are different appeals
For an ambient station, the appeal may be the combination of music and atmosphere: a recurring visual setting, familiar sound, and a low-pressure feeling of company. An exploratory interview study of regular listeners to the ChilledCow station examined what made lofi streaming compelling and identified the animation and music as contributors. A stream centered on a particular artist can work differently. An interview-based study of V Live music fans identified interpersonal relationships, social presence, celebrity support and presence, social interaction, and differentiation as motivations. Those findings help explain why fandom and identity may matter in artist-led broadcasts, but V Live’s celebrity-fan context is not the same as a mostly ambient YouTube radio stream. What the evidence can—and cannot—say about subscribing
There is no representative statistic here measuring why viewers subscribe specifically to 24/7 YouTube music streams, and no established subscription-conversion rate for any one factor. The studies cover different settings and outcomes: live amateur performances, an exploratory lo-fi survey, qualitative interviews, fan livestreams, and music broadcasts during a particular lockdown period. It would be misleading to treat them as interchangeable or to declare one motive the main cause of subscriptions.

The best-supported synthesis is that a useful, musically appealing stream may earn repeat listening, while liveness and community can provide an additional reason for some viewers to identify with the channel and subscribe. That is a plausible explanation, not a prediction of subscriber growth for an individual stream.

A channel can make its listening purpose easy to understand—such as focus, relaxation, or a particular musical style—and decide whether chat is part of the experience or merely available. YouTube lists mobile, webcam, encoder, and console options for going live; the right setup depends on the format. A production tool or continuous stream may support availability, but the evidence above does not show that equipment or a specific service makes viewers subscribe.
