The largest combined cost pressure in recent industry analyses comes from the processor, DRAM memory, and SSD storage. CPU cost alone is commonly estimated at roughly 15–30% of a notebook bill of materials (BOM), while memory and storage together were about 15% in normal conditions before a sharp projected increase.
Those percentages are not universal price tags for every laptop. A gaming model, thin-and-light system, Chromebook, and workstation use different chips, capacities, displays, batteries, and circuit boards. The clearest illustration is TrendForce’s $900 mainstream reference notebook: CPU, DRAM, and SSD represented about 45% of BOM in 1Q25 and were projected to reach about 68% by 3Q26. That is a model-specific calculation, not a guarantee that every laptop will rise by the same amount.

Start with the bill of materials, not the sticker price
A bill of materials is the cost of the physical parts assembled into a laptop. It normally includes the processor, memory, storage, motherboard, display, battery, wireless hardware, keyboard, chassis, cooling system, and other components. It does not equal the retail price. Assembly, testing, software licensing, freight, warranty service, marketing, distributor and retailer margins, taxes, and currency movements sit outside the BOM.

That distinction explains why a 10% increase in one component does not automatically produce a 10% increase at checkout. The component first changes the manufacturer’s cost. The manufacturer then chooses whether to raise the wholesale price, accept a smaller margin, alter the specification, draw down cheaper inventory, or combine several responses. Distribution and retail channels make another pricing decision before the laptop reaches a shelf or online cart.

Why the CPU can move a laptop’s cost so much
The processor is often the largest single identifiable component cost. TrendForce places it at approximately 15–30% of notebook BOM, with the range depending on the system setup. A basic office laptop may use a lower-cost chip with modest cooling and power requirements. A performance notebook may require a higher-tier CPU, stronger voltage regulation, larger heat pipes, and a more capable fan system. The processor decision therefore affects both the chip line item and supporting parts.
CPU supply is also less predictable than a simple list price suggests. TrendForce described CPU supply volatility as one of the pressures affecting notebook production in early 2026. If supply is constrained, an OEM may pay more for available chips, delay a model, substitute another processor, or reserve scarce units for premium systems. Those choices can alter a laptop’s price or its performance tier without any change to the chassis.
Because CPU percentages are expressed as a share of BOM, the same processor increase has different consequences in different designs. In an inexpensive laptop, a higher CPU cost may represent a larger fraction of the complete machine. In a premium model with an expensive display, discrete graphics, or advanced materials, the CPU may still cost more in dollars while representing a smaller percentage of the total BOM.
How DRAM and SSD prices became a larger share
DRAM capacity and supply
DRAM is the working memory used by the operating system and applications. TrendForce estimated that DRAM and SSD together accounted for roughly 15% of notebook BOM under normal conditions, then projected that the pair would exceed 30% in 1Q26 after several quarters of price increases. The increase reflects both higher prices and the fact that modern laptops commonly ship with more memory than older entry-level systems.

TrendForce also forecast quarter-over-quarter contract-price increases of more than 80% for notebook DRAM in 1Q26. A contract price is negotiated between suppliers and manufacturers; it is not the same thing as a retail laptop price. It indicates why an OEM’s next production batch can cost substantially more even when the previous batch was built from cheaper inventory.
NAND and SSD storage
SSDs use NAND flash memory. Their cost is influenced by flash pricing, controller availability, capacity, performance requirements, and the mix of drives purchased by manufacturers. TrendForce forecast a more than 70% quarter-over-quarter increase in notebook SSD contract prices for 1Q26. Again, that is a component-market forecast rather than a promise that laptop prices would rise 70%.
Storage and memory are particularly visible to buyers because manufacturers can respond in several ways. They can raise the price of a 16 GB or 1 TB configuration, ship a cheaper capacity, use slower parts, or keep the advertised price while reducing the specification. Comparing only the headline price can therefore hide a change in usable memory or storage.
The combined CPU, memory, and storage effect
TrendForce’s reference-model calculation shows why several moderate pressures can become a major pricing problem. In a $900 mainstream notebook, CPU, DRAM, and SSD were estimated at about 45% of BOM in 1Q25 and projected at about 68% by 3Q26. The figures describe the share of the parts budget, not 45% or 68% of the retail price.

When these three categories consume more of the BOM, less of the manufacturer’s original cost structure remains available for the display, chassis, battery, motherboard, assembly, warranty, and margin. An OEM must then either accept lower profitability, raise the price, or redesign the configuration. A model with fixed retail positioning may be changed from 32 GB to 16 GB of memory, or from a larger SSD to a smaller one, to keep its target price.
Other hardware pressures that still matter
Printed circuit boards
TrendForce identifies PCBs as another source of cost pressure. Modern laptops can require more motherboard layers to route high-speed memory, storage, wireless connectivity, power delivery, and increasingly dense processor packages. More layers increase manufacturing complexity. Copper prices also affect the raw-material cost of those boards. The available industry estimates do not establish one PCB percentage that can be applied to every laptop.
Batteries and power-management ICs
Battery cost varies with capacity, cell chemistry, physical shape, safety circuitry, and charging speed. A thin laptop may need a custom-shaped pack, while a performance system may require more capacity to support a higher-power CPU and graphics processor. Power-management ICs regulate charging and the multiple voltages used by the processor, memory, storage, display, and ports. TrendForce reports pressure in both batteries and PMICs, but does not provide universal dollar shares.

Display, chassis, cooling, and graphics
These parts can be decisive in a particular model even though the cited analyses do not provide a universal ranking for them. A high-refresh OLED panel, aluminum enclosure, discrete graphics processor, larger cooling assembly, or premium keyboard can cost more than the equivalent part in an entry-level machine. Their importance must be assessed alongside the laptop’s actual configuration rather than inferred from a single industry-wide percentage.

What current forecasts say about the broader market
Gartner forecast that combined DRAM and SSD prices could rise 130% by the end of 2026 compared with 2025, while PC prices could rise 17% over the same comparison. It also forecast that memory would represent 23% of PC BOM, up from 16% in 2025. These are forecasts published in February 2026, not settled outcomes. Gartner’s shipment outlook describes a severe contraction, but shipment forecasts do not determine the exact price of any individual laptop.
The difference between the component and PC forecasts is important. A 130% increase in a component basket does not translate one-for-one into a 130% laptop-price increase because memory is only part of BOM and because manufacturers can change margins, specifications, inventory timing, and channel pricing.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How a component increase reaches the retail shelf
- Suppliers reset contract prices. Memory, storage, and processor suppliers negotiate prices for future production. Tight capacity or allocation can raise those contracts before a new laptop is announced.
- The manufacturer calculates the new BOM. The OEM adds the changed component costs to the motherboard, battery, display, chassis, assembly, warranty, and other expenses. Existing inventory may temporarily cushion the increase.
- The OEM chooses a response. It can raise the wholesale price, accept a lower margin, reduce memory or storage, substitute parts, delay a launch, or combine those actions.
- Distribution and retail set the final price. Channel margins, promotions, regional taxes, shipping, exchange rates, and stock levels determine what buyers see. A retailer with older inventory may keep an earlier price after the manufacturer’s new production cost has risen.
This chain is why two laptops with similar specifications can have different prices, and why the same model can move in price without a visible external redesign.

TrendForce modeled a $900 mainstream notebook to show the effect under a specific margin assumption. Memory price increases alone could require a retail increase of more than 30% to preserve existing supply-chain margins. If CPU increases were added, the modeled increase approached 40%. These are scenario results, not an observed universal price change or a prediction that every $900 laptop would cost nearly $1,260.
Best Value
| Scenario in TrendForce’s model | Illustrated retail effect | What the figure assumes |
|---|---|---|
| Memory increases only | More than 30% increase | Existing supply-chain margins are maintained for the $900 reference notebook. |
| Memory plus CPU increases | Close to 40% increase | The same margin-preservation assumption and the specific reference configuration. |
| Actual laptop market outcome | Not fixed by the model | Brands may absorb costs, change specifications, use inventory, or accept lower margins. TrendForce, March 2026 |
Why the same component affects laptops differently
- Configuration: Processor tier, memory capacity, SSD capacity, display technology, graphics hardware, and motherboard complexity determine the starting BOM.
- Inventory timing: A manufacturer holding components purchased at older prices can delay the effect, while a company buying on current contracts feels it sooner.
- Product strategy: A brand may protect a popular price point by cutting capacity, or protect the specification by raising the price.
- Margin policy: Some companies absorb part of an increase to defend market share; others preserve target margins.
- Channel and geography: Distributor margins, promotions, taxes, tariffs, freight, and currency exchange can make regional prices diverge.
- Substitution: An OEM may switch processors, memory suppliers, SSD capacities, or board designs, changing performance and cost at the same time.
For these reasons, no public analysis cited here supplies a universal dollar ranking that applies to every laptop brand and model. Component shares are useful for understanding pressure, but they are not a transparent retail price formula.
What buyers should check when prices move
- Compare the complete specification. Check CPU model, RAM capacity and type, SSD capacity, display resolution and refresh rate, battery size, and graphics hardware rather than comparing only the laptop name.
- Look for specification substitutions. If a familiar model becomes cheaper, verify that memory, storage, screen, or processor has not been reduced.
- Separate a temporary promotion from a structural change. Retail clearance inventory can be discounted even while new production costs are rising.
- Check upgrade options. Soldered memory and storage limit the ability to compensate later for a lower factory specification; replaceable parts provide more flexibility, subject to the manufacturer’s design.
- Interpret forecasts carefully. Contract-price and BOM forecasts describe industry pressure, not the exact price you will pay for a particular configuration in a particular country.
The practical conclusion
CPU, DRAM, and SSD are the most important documented combined drivers of laptop BOM cost in the cited 2026 analyses. The CPU alone can account for about 15–30% of notebook BOM, while memory and storage can move from a roughly 15% combined share in normal conditions to more than 30% in a projected high-price scenario. PCB complexity, copper, batteries, and power-management components add further pressure.
The retail result depends on decisions made after the component price changes. A manufacturer can raise the price, reduce the specification, use cheaper inventory, or accept a smaller margin. Treat the reported 30% and near-40% increases as conditional calculations for a $900 reference notebook, not as inevitable increases for every laptop.
