The most reliable way to keep mosquitoes outside is to combine exclusion with source reduction: repair and use every window and door screen, keep exterior and garage doors closed instead of propped open, use air conditioning when practical, and remove standing water from containers every week. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends this sequence because no single spray or device prevents every mosquito from entering.
Begin with a room-by-room inspection, then check the outside of the building and your garage. If mosquitoes remain after screens are repaired and water-holding containers are managed, the CDC lists an indoor insecticide or a licensed pest-control professional as next steps. An insecticide used by itself will not keep a home mosquito-free, so treat it as escalation rather than the foundation of your plan.

The two-part strategy: block entry and remove breeding opportunities
Mosquito control at home has two separate jobs. Exclusion keeps adult mosquitoes from flying inside. Source reduction removes containers where mosquitoes can develop, reducing the number you encounter around the house.

Follow this inspection order
Use the same route each time so a small opening or forgotten container is less likely to be missed. Start indoors, move to the building’s exterior, and finish with a weekly water check.
- List every window and exterior door. Include windows in bedrooms, bathrooms, basements, and rooms that are rarely used. Add patio, balcony, side, back, and garage doors.
- Inspect the window screens. Look for holes, tears, loose or damaged screen material, and screens that have been removed or left open.
- Check how each door is used. Confirm that household members close exterior doors after passing through and that no door is routinely propped open.
- Check the garage door. It is an exterior opening too; leaving it raised or partly open creates a direct route indoors.
- Use air conditioning when practical. If cooling is available, it can let you keep windows and screened openings closed rather than relying on open ventilation.
- Walk through indoor water-holding areas. Check vases, flowerpot saucers, and any other item that can collect water.
- Walk the entire outdoor perimeter. Look at containers, toys, tools, plant equipment, decorative items, and water-storage vessels.
- Correct what you find, then repeat weekly. Empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or discard containers that hold water. If an outdoor water container cannot be covered with a solid lid, the CDC says wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito can be used.
- Escalate only after the basics are active. If mosquitoes still appear indoors, follow the indoor-insecticide or professional-service options described below.
Windows: find and correct screen failures
Inspect every screen, not just the rooms where you notice bites
Mosquitoes can enter through a damaged screen in a room that nobody associates with the problem. Open or remove curtains and blinds so you can see the full perimeter of each screen. Check the center of the mesh as well as the edges, corners, and points where the screen meets the frame.
- Look for visible holes or tears in the screen material.
- Check for sections that are loose, pulled away, or otherwise damaged.
- Confirm that a screen is actually installed and in use whenever the window is open.
- Inspect windows that are opened only occasionally; a forgotten unscreened opening can undermine otherwise intact screens.
The CDC guidance supports installing or repairing screens but does not specify a universal mesh size, screen material, or repair technique. Choose a repair or replacement approach that restores a continuous barrier and fits the existing window. A generic screen-repair kit may be suitable for a small damaged area, but the CDC does not endorse a particular kit, material, compatibility claim, or performance level.
Quick wins for a faster PC:

For a limited hole, a repair can restore the barrier. If the screen is extensively damaged or no longer fits its opening, replacement may be more practical. The cited CDC pages do not establish a single point at which replacement is always preferable, so base that decision on the condition and fit of the individual screen.
After any work, close the window and examine the perimeter again. A repaired center section does not help if the surrounding screen remains loose or damaged. The goal is a complete, usable screen that household members will keep in place.

Doors and the garage: stop routine openings
Make “close behind you” the default
Door management is behavioral as well as mechanical. The CDC recommends closing doors, including garage doors, and not leaving them propped open. Ask everyone in the household to close an exterior door immediately after entering or leaving. Pay attention during deliveries, moving items, parties, and chores when a door is often held open for convenience.
- Check front, back, side, patio, balcony, and basement-level exterior doors.
- Check doors leading from the house into an attached garage.
- Confirm that the garage door is closed when the garage is not actively being entered or exited.
- Remove wedges or objects that hold doors open unless they are needed for a specific, supervised task.
- Keep a second person or a temporary physical reminder from turning a brief task into a door left open for an extended period.
Inspect the opening without inventing a measurement
Look around the full door opening for visible damage, misalignment, or a screen that is missing or not being used. The CDC material cited for this guide does not give a door-gap threshold or recommend a particular sweep, weatherstripping product, or hardware system. Do not treat a specific gap measurement as a CDC requirement. Instead, make sure the door closes fully and that its screen, where present, is intact and used.
For a screened door, check the mesh, frame, and edges in the same way as a window screen. A door that is technically screened but routinely left open still provides an entry opportunity, so correct both the physical condition and the habit.
Air conditioning and other ways to keep openings closed
CDC home-control guidance lists air conditioning as another way to keep mosquitoes outside. When practical, use air conditioning instead of leaving windows open for cooling. This is an alternative to relying on an open, screened window; it does not replace repairing a screen on a window that may still be opened.
If you do not have air conditioning, continue using intact screens and deliberate door-closing. The supplied CDC pages do not provide a ranking of ventilation systems, fans, filters, or other devices for mosquito exclusion, so this guide does not assign them a performance claim.

Indoor water checks: vases, saucers, and forgotten containers
Inspect places that are easy to overlook
Source reduction is not only an outdoor task. The CDC specifically includes indoor water-holding containers such as vases and flowerpot saucers. Walk through living areas, kitchens, bathrooms, utility spaces, balconies, and plant-care areas. Any item that can retain water belongs on the checklist, even if it is decorative or used only occasionally.

- Turn items over when they are not needed so rain or spills cannot accumulate.
- Cover containers that must remain in place.
- Discard items that are no longer useful and repeatedly collect water.
“Empty” should be part of a weekly routine, not a one-time response to seeing a mosquito. Scrubbing is included in the CDC recommendation because simply tipping out water does not address residue left in the container. The guidance does not establish a special indoor schedule beyond the weekly routine, so add the check to a regular household day.
Outdoor water: complete the weekly perimeter walk
Check movable items and storage
After inspecting the house, circle the outside of the property. Look for any container that can hold water, including items moved into the yard temporarily. Empty and scrub, turn over, cover, or discard them according to how they are used. Repeat the walk every week and after conditions that refill containers.
For outdoor water storage without a lid, CDC guidance says to use wire mesh with holes smaller than an adult mosquito. That instruction applies to the mesh opening; the cited page does not specify a brand, gauge, frame, or installation method. Make sure the covering remains in place and continues to prevent access to the water.
Do not stop at the doorway
A house can have excellent screens and still have a continuing mosquito problem if water-holding containers around it are ignored. Source reduction lowers the opportunities for mosquitoes near the home while screens and closed doors address the route into living spaces. Treat the two layers as separate checks rather than substituting one for the other.

What to do when mosquitoes are still indoors
Confirm the basics before escalating
Before using a product or hiring help, verify that every window and door screen has been inspected, damaged screens have been repaired or replaced as appropriate, exterior and garage doors are being closed, and the weekly indoor and outdoor water check is happening. This sequence addresses the entry and breeding opportunities identified in CDC guidance.
Indoor insecticide: a follow-up option, not a complete solution
The CDC lists an indoor insecticide as an option when mosquitoes persist after basic control measures. Read and follow the product label, including directions about where it may be applied, how much to use, ventilation, people, pets, and re-entry. The label is the controlling safety instruction for that product.
CDC also cautions that using only an indoor insecticide will not keep a home free of mosquitoes. Spraying without repairing screens, closing doors, or removing water-holding containers leaves the underlying routes and sources in place. Do not present an indoor spray as a guarantee of a mosquito-free home.
When to involve a pest-control professional
If mosquitoes continue to appear indoors after the exclusion and water checks are active, the CDC names a pest-control professional as another option. A professional can assess the property and determine what treatment is appropriate. No single provider or service plan is established by the CDC pages cited here, so choose a qualified local service and ask what areas will be inspected and treated.
Common mistakes that defeat an otherwise good plan
Repairing one screen and stopping
One damaged window can be the visible problem, but every window and door needs inspection. Mosquitoes do not limit themselves to the room where a person notices them.

Leaving a door open “for just a minute”
Repeated short openings add up. Keep doors closed except while someone is actively passing through or carrying out a supervised task, and do not leave the garage door raised for convenience.
Checking only outdoor containers
Vases and flowerpot saucers are CDC examples of indoor water-holding items. Include them in the same weekly routine as outdoor containers.
Relying on a spray while screens remain damaged
An insecticide can address mosquitoes already inside, but CDC says it will not by itself keep a home mosquito-free. Restore the physical barrier and remove water sources first.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesAssuming a product specification is a CDC rule
The cited guidance does not set a universal screen mesh size, door-gap threshold, repair method, or repair-versus-replacement rule. Treat those decisions as site-specific rather than attributing an unsupported specification to CDC.
A simple household schedule
| Frequency | Task | Completion check |
|---|---|---|
| Today | Inspect every window and exterior door screen; check the garage door; remove anything propping a door open. | Damaged or unused screens are recorded for correction, and doors close rather than remain open. |
| Today | Use air conditioning when practical instead of leaving windows open. | Rooms can remain closed while maintaining the preferred indoor temperature. |
| Weekly | Inspect indoor and outdoor water-holding containers. | Items are emptied and scrubbed, turned over, covered, or discarded. |
| After heavy rain or another refill event | Repeat the outdoor container walk. | No container remains with accessible standing water. |
| After basic measures are active | Escalate to a label-directed indoor insecticide or a pest-control professional if mosquitoes still enter. | The selected option is used according to its instructions and is not treated as a replacement for exclusion. |
Repellents are secondary to keeping mosquitoes outside
This article focuses on home entry, not personal bite protection. If you also use a repellent, CDC says it and the Environmental Protection Agency recommend EPA-registered repellents for bite protection. CDC adds: “We do not know the effectiveness of non-EPA registered insect repellents, including some natural repellents.” That statement appears in the CDC’s prevention guidance, published May 15, 2024 and updated August 28, 2024, at CDC Preventing Mosquito Bites. A repellent may protect a person temporarily; it does not repair a screen, close a door, or remove a water source.
When to revisit the plan
Recheck the home whenever a screen is damaged, a door begins to remain open, a room’s ventilation practice changes, or a container is added outdoors. A weekly water inspection should continue even when no mosquitoes are visible. If mosquitoes remain despite consistent exclusion and source reduction, document which openings and containers were checked, then use the CDC’s escalation options while following all product-label directions.
