Useful options include flexible controls, adjustable pace, separate combat and puzzle difficulty, and clear, redundant combat cues. No single feature list can establish that a game will work for every player.
What makes RPG combat accessible?
Accessibility in combat is about whether players can perceive what is happening, understand the available actions, and perform those actions with their own abilities and tools. That can depend on reaction speed, input complexity, how long a button must be held, visual or audio cues, and the game’s difficulty settings.

These demands are distinct. A player may be able to make strategic decisions but struggle with rapid button presses; another may manage combat inputs but need more time to read a prompt or identify an incoming attack. Design guidance from Xbox Accessibility Guideline 107 and Guideline 108 treats input and difficulty as more than a single question of whether a game has an Easy mode.
Which control options reduce input barriers?
Remapping and action-based inputs
Button remapping can help players find a comfortable control layout, but it does not necessarily make an action easier to perform. If an attack requires several buttons in a particular order, moving those buttons does not remove the sequence or the need to remember it. Microsoft’s Guideline 107 gives the example of a player who remains blocked by a boss attack requiring “X + X + RT + A,” even if the individual buttons can be reassigned.

- Hook-and-loop gaming board: Freely layout buttons and triggers to fit your unique needs or use ties for additional flexibility and stability.
- PS5 stick-on label system: Label your buttons and triggers with PS5 symbols for seamless gameplay.
Where a game supports them, action-based inputs can reduce that burden—for example, mapping an action such as picking something up to one button rather than requiring a more involved input. The useful question is not only “Can I remap this button?” but also “Can I perform this action without a fast, complex, or sustained input?”
Repeated presses and holds
Repeated presses and long holds create different demands. A rapid attack may be difficult for someone who cannot press a button quickly or repeatedly; holding a button may be difficult for someone who cannot sustain pressure. Toggle controls or automatic holds can address the latter, while simplified inputs may address the former. These options are most useful when they apply to the specific action that causes difficulty.

Timing and game speed
Slowing the game can give players more time to recognize a threat and choose an offensive or defensive response. It is not the same as changing a button layout, and it will not solve every input or information barrier. Steamworks’ accessibility guidance also recommends avoiding time limits when core gameplay does not require reaction or precise timing, and allowing enough time to read and process narrative choices.
Options documented for particular games illustrate what pace controls can look like, without proving a specific learning benefit. Sony Interactive Entertainment’s article about Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart documents shortcut-selected speeds of 70%, 50%, and 30%, as well as a return to normal speed and toggle alternatives to continuous weapon-fire holds. Consult the official Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart accessibility article for those documented features.

Why difficulty should be adjustable by challenge
Combat difficulty is only one possible barrier in an RPG. A game may also ask players to aim precisely, repeat close-combat inputs, remember information, or solve puzzles that rely on visual or cognitive processing. Xbox Accessibility Guideline 108 recommends considering how core mechanics can be graded separately rather than treating difficulty as only Easy, Normal, or Hard.
That separation gives players more control over the experience. Someone might want less demanding combat while keeping puzzles challenging, or easier puzzles without changing combat. Microsoft summarizes the aim this way: “The goal of difficulty options is to allow players of all skill levels and abilities to enjoy the game in its entirety.” Steamworks likewise recommends granular controls where possible and clear explanations of what each preset changes.

- Hall Effect joysticks eliminate stick drift and deliver smooth, accurate control for consistent performance in every game.
- Optimized 250Hz polling rate provides fast, reliable input with stable and consistent responsiveness.
- Programmable back buttons allow added control options for competitive gameplay
- Impulse Hall Effect triggers deliver smooth, responsive input for both quick reactions and precise control.
- Laser-textured bumpers and triggers improve grip and handling during intense gameplay.
When comparing a game’s settings, look for specifics rather than relying on a preset’s name:

- Can you adjust those elements independently, or only as a bundle?
- Are puzzle or other non-combat challenges controlled separately?

How combat feedback and presentation affect access
Players need to notice and interpret combat information as well as execute inputs. Threat indicators, captions, readable interface text, and audio cues for prompts can provide different ways to receive or understand information. The right combination depends on the player; a visual indicator does not help someone who cannot see it, and an audio cue may not help someone who cannot hear it.

Official feature pages show how games can expose these adjustments. Dragon Age: The Veilguard documents modular combat presets that can individually adjust enemy aggression, enemy resistances, and combat timing, along with subtitle and caption options, adjustable UI text, HUD visibility, and visual indicators for melee and ranged threats. See EA’s Dragon Age: The Veilguard accessibility resources.
PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök accessibility page documents action-based remapping, control schemes, combat assists such as aim assist, adjustable subtitles and captions, UI text sizing, and audio cues for on-screen prompts in general and combat gameplay. These are examples of documented options for that game; they do not establish that either title is suitable for every player or rank one as more accessible than the other. See PlayStation’s God of War Ragnarök accessibility page.
What settings can—and cannot—tell you about the learning curve
Flexible controls, adjustable timing, and clear feedback can make it easier for a player to engage with a game’s combat demands. But a settings list does not show how quickly players learn a combat system, nor does it prove that an option improves learning for everyone. The official game examples document features, not comparative learning rates.
Accessibility also cannot be reduced to a universal pass-or-fail label. A CHI 2024 study by Martinez, Froehlich, and Fogarty discusses diverse player needs and workarounds, and recommends opt-in customization and clearer, more discoverable information. Its findings are a reason to describe concrete features and their limits rather than declare a game universally accessible. Read the study, “Playing on Hard Mode: Accessibility, Difficulty, and Joy in Video Game Adoption for Gamers with Disabilities”.
How to assess an RPG before or while playing
- Check the exact game and platform. Look for the official accessibility information for the title and platform you intend to use; documented features can change or vary by version.
- Identify the demanding action. Is the difficulty a fast reaction, repeated press, complex sequence, sustained hold, timing window, or trouble recognizing a threat?
- Look for a matching control option. Check for remapping, simplified or action-based inputs, toggles, automatic holds, or a game-speed setting, depending on the barrier.
- Separate challenge settings. See whether combat, puzzles, timing, and other demands can be adjusted independently, and read what each preset actually changes.
- Check how information is presented. Look for adjustable text and captions, HUD visibility, visual threat indicators, and audio cues where relevant to your needs.
- Test options in a low-pressure setting. If the game permits, try a setting in a safe area or early encounter and adjust it to your preference. A feature’s presence does not guarantee it will solve a particular player’s difficulty.
A useful comparison therefore describes controls, timing, challenge settings, combat feedback, presentation, and how easy the options are to find—not a single score that claims to predict every player’s experience.
