You can mute Meta AI in some Meta apps and limit certain uses of messages, but there is no documented single switch that completely turns it off across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp. Muting may quiet a conversation without removing the Meta AI icon or AI-assisted search. The right control depends on whether you want fewer notifications, fewer visible entry points, or added privacy for a particular chat.
What “turn off Meta AI” means in practice
Meta AI is integrated into these apps, and the available controls have different scopes. Muting a conversation can reduce interruptions; it is not the same as hiding every place Meta AI appears or disabling the assistant. A chat-level privacy setting can restrict specified AI uses of messages in that chat, but it does not switch off Meta AI for the whole account.

The Associated Press described the limitation this way: there is “no one button to turn off Meta AI” across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger, or WhatsApp. Meta’s own Facebook explainer, published June 5, 2026, describes muting and interaction adjustments rather than a complete disable control. Labels and availability may vary by account, region, and app rollout.
Facebook: mute Meta AI, but expect some entry points to remain
Meta’s Facebook guidance says you can mute Meta AI. On the mobile app, AP reports that you can open the Meta AI or search experience, open its information controls, and choose the mute option. If offered, select a duration such as “Until I change it.” The exact labels and route can change as Facebook updates its interface.

Muting can silence the chat or reduce interruptions; it does not necessarily remove the Meta AI icon or exclude AI-assisted search results and features. If your goal is to avoid opening the assistant accidentally, muting may help with notifications but may not remove the visible entry point.
Instagram: mute the Meta AI conversation
AP reports that Instagram users can mute the Meta AI conversation or its notifications. Use the conversation’s mute controls if they are available in your version of the app. This is a notification or conversation setting—not a setting that disables Meta AI throughout Instagram. The sources do not establish a universal Instagram off switch or guarantee that muting hides every entry point.

WhatsApp: use chat-level privacy for a specific conversation
Advanced Chat Privacy
WhatsApp’s Advanced Chat Privacy setting is intended for an individual sensitive chat. Meta Engineering explained on April 29, 2025, that it can prevent messages in a selected chat from being used for AI features such as mentioning Meta AI. This is a specific chat-level protection, not a global opt-out. Look for Advanced Chat Privacy in the relevant chat’s information or settings; the exact menu labels may vary by app version.

Deleting or muting the Meta AI conversation does not remove the integrated assistant. Those actions affect the conversation or its notifications, not the underlying WhatsApp feature.

Incognito Chat
In May 2026, Meta announced Incognito Chat with Meta AI for WhatsApp and the Meta AI app, with a rollout planned over the coming months. The announcement presents it as a way to have private AI conversations, not as a way to turn the assistant off. The announcement does not confirm whether the feature is available on any particular account.
Private Processing
Meta describes Private Processing as a privacy measure for certain AI requests. It should not be read as a disable control or as a claim that every kind of AI processing is covered.

Accounts Center and privacy claims are not global AI switches
Accounts Center manages connected experiences and some account settings across Meta services. Meta says connected accounts may use information across those accounts for personalized experiences, and notes that adding WhatsApp to Accounts Center is not available everywhere. That account-linking control is not a documented way to disable Meta AI across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
Meta’s Privacy Matters page, updated in June 2026, states that using a Meta generative AI feature does not link WhatsApp account information with Facebook or Instagram account information. Meta also says Meta AI cannot initiate a chat in WhatsApp, Instagram, or Messenger. These are Meta’s stated claims and have a limited scope: they do not mean that no information is processed when you choose to interact with Meta AI.
