A joke language is defined specifically by humorous intent. The categories overlap: a joke language can be an esolang, but an esolang does not have to be a joke.
The most reliable distinction is to ask what the language’s defining feature is meant to accomplish. If the parody or punchline is the point, “joke language” is usually the clearest label. If the central aim is to explore computation, impose a constraint, create an art form or make programming exceptionally difficult, “esolang” tells the reader more—even when the result is also funny.

The short distinction: category versus motivation
“Esoteric programming language” is the broader category. Specialist descriptions use the term for languages created primarily to explore ideas outside ordinary software development. Those ideas can include a radically small instruction set, an unfamiliar way to represent control flow, deliberate difficulty, code-golf brevity, obfuscation, a literary or visual form, or a joke.

A joke language might be executable, computationally expressive and carefully engineered, or it might exist mainly as a punchline with little practical programming capability.

That makes the relationship best understood as overlapping sets:
- Every joke language is not automatically an esolang. The label depends on whether it is presented as a programming language or computational experiment at all.
- Many joke languages are esolangs. Their humor is one of the unusual design goals that places them outside mainstream programming.
- Many esolangs are not jokes. Their main attraction may be minimalism, a new computational model, an artistic format or an extreme challenge.
There is no universally enforced formal taxonomy. Creators can have mixed motives, and community-maintained lists may classify borderline projects differently. “Esolang” and “joke language” are therefore practical descriptions of purpose, not mutually exclusive technical standards.
What an esolang is designed to do
An esolang deliberately departs from the assumptions of languages such as C, Python or JavaScript. It may remove conveniences, replace familiar syntax with an unusual medium, or make the act of programming itself the subject of the experiment.
Recommended Free Tools
Minimalism and constraint
A language can make severe limits its central idea: very few commands, a tiny character set, no conventional variables, or an intentionally awkward memory model. The point is to investigate how much computation can be expressed under those limits, not necessarily to deliver a joke.
Brainfuck is the standard illustration. It uses eight command characters, yet its computational model can be shown to be Turing-complete. Its appeal is the constraint and the puzzle of expressing algorithms with so little notation. Individual examples can be humorous, but humor is not required to explain why Brainfuck exists.
Unusual computational models
Some esolangs make a different model of execution visible. Befunge uses two-dimensional programs in which control flow can move through a grid in multiple directions. The spatial layout is not decorative syntax; it changes how a programmer thinks about branching, sequencing and execution.
Difficulty as the subject
Other languages are intentionally hostile to ordinary programming practice. Malbolge is presented as a language designed to be exceptionally difficult to use. A language can therefore qualify as esoteric because it turns difficulty into the experiment, even if there is no parody or punchline.

Art, literature and theme
Shakespeare shapes programs like plays. The theatrical form is the design goal: source code is meant to read as dialogue and scenes while still representing computation. Similar projects use poetry, music, pictures or a cultural theme. Their unusual surface is purposeful artistic or thematic design, not merely a gag.
Entertainment and commentary
Humor is still a major esolang motivation. Sebastian Morr summarizes the broader range in his introductory paper: “These so-called ‘esoteric’ programming languages have other purposes: To entertain, to be beautiful, or to make a point.” Entertainment is one purpose among several, which is why “esolang” remains useful even when a project is funny.
What makes a language a joke language?
A joke language is best identified by asking what would be lost if the joke disappeared. If the parody, absurd premise or cultural reference is the essential feature, the language is functioning as a joke language.
Parody of familiar language design
INTERCAL is a clear overlap case. It was designed in 1972 by Donald R. Woods and James M. Lyon to be unlike conventional languages and is recognized as a parody of mainstream language design from its era. Its comic “PLEASE DO” convention makes the satirical intent visible while the language remains an esolang with a defined computational behavior.
Executable versus non-executable jokes
Joke status does not tell you whether code runs. The Esolang overview notes that some joke languages, including Ook!, are usable for programming, while others, such as HQ9+, are not useful for general programming. A working interpreter can strengthen the joke, but it is not a requirement, and the absence of practical utility does not by itself make a project a joke.
Mixed motives are normal
A creator may want to parody a language, test a compiler idea and challenge programmers at the same time. In such cases, “joke language” highlights the comic intent, while “esolang” identifies the wider experimental context. Neither label has to exclude the other.
Comparison at a glance
| Question | Esolang | Joke language |
|---|---|---|
| What defines it? | An unusual or non-practical design goal, which may be technical, artistic, challenging or humorous. | Humorous, satirical or parody-oriented intent. |
| Is humor required? | No. Minimalism, new computational models, art and difficulty can be sufficient. | Yes, if “joke” is being used precisely. |
| Must it run programs? | No universal requirement, although many have interpreters and meaningful execution. | No. Some run code; others are mainly conceptual or performative. |
| Must it be Turing-complete? | No. Turing-completeness is a property of computational power, not the definition of the category. | No. A joke can be computationally expressive or deliberately nonfunctional. |
| Can the labels overlap? | Yes. A humorous esolang is both. | Yes. A joke language may also be classified as an esolang. |
Why Turing-completeness does not settle the question
It is tempting to divide languages into “real” and “joke” projects by asking whether they are Turing-complete. That is the wrong test. Turing-completeness describes whether a computational system can, in principle, simulate any computation given suitable resources. It does not describe the creator’s purpose, the language’s usability or its cultural role.

Brainfuck demonstrates the problem with using computability as a seriousness test: its instruction set is tiny, yet it can be shown to be Turing-complete. Conversely, a language can have an interpreter and still be primarily a parody. INTERCAL’s comic conventions do not disappear because it computes, and a non-universal joke does not become an esolang for technical reasons alone.
When evaluating a borderline example, treat computational power as one independent axis. Ask what the language can compute, but separately ask why its syntax, semantics or constraints were chosen.
A practical test for borderline examples
Use the following sequence when a language seems to fit both labels or neither.
- Identify the declared or evident purpose. Look for statements by the creator and for the design’s most obvious effect. Is the project parodying a familiar language, exploring a computational idea, enforcing minimality, creating an artwork, or setting a challenge?
- Remove the surface joke mentally. If the project still has a coherent experiment—such as two-dimensional control flow or an extreme instruction constraint—“esolang” remains informative. If the design collapses without the punchline, “joke language” is the stronger description.
- Inspect what the constraint accomplishes. Does an awkward rule make a point about language design, produce a visual or literary form, or test a programming skill? Or is the rule present mainly to land a gag?
- Check the computational behavior separately. Is there an interpreter, and does the language perform meaningful computation? Record that fact without treating it as a verdict on seriousness.
- Consult community classification cautiously. Specialist lists can reveal how practitioners describe a project, but those lists are community-maintained and may not resolve mixed-intent cases.
- Use more than one label when needed. “A humorous esolang,” “a parody language with an interpreter” or “an artistic esolang” can be more accurate than forcing a single category.
Historical context: the labels developed around experiments
The Esolang community wiki identifies INTERCAL, designed in 1972, as the earliest known deliberately esoteric language. The same community reference lists Brainfuck and Befunge as examples from 1993. These dates are that community source’s account rather than a universally agreed official chronology.
The history helps explain why “esoteric” is broader than “joke.” Early projects often reacted to mainstream language conventions through parody, but later work expanded into minimal instruction sets, visual layouts, literary forms and intentionally punishing challenges. Humor is prominent in the culture without being the category’s only foundation.

The argument does not erase the comic side of esolangs; it shows why a language can be playful and intellectually useful at the same time.
Why people create and study esolangs
Learning through constraint
Removing familiar conveniences makes hidden assumptions visible. A tiny instruction set can force a programmer to reason about memory, loops and representation. A two-dimensional language can expose how control flow depends on program structure. The resulting code may be impractical, but the constraint can make a concept easier to notice.

Questioning language design
An esolang can ask what counts as syntax, whether a language needs conventional statements, or how much meaning can be carried by layout and theme. These are design questions, not merely exercises in making software inconvenient.
Creative and cultural expression
Languages modeled on plays, jokes or visual forms treat source code as a medium. Reading or writing the program can be part of the artwork. A humorous premise can also provide social commentary about programming culture and the assumptions built into mainstream tools.

Community challenges
Some languages exist to give experienced programmers a puzzle. The challenge may involve code-golf brevity, deciphering obfuscation or surviving an intentionally difficult execution model. The community activity around solving and explaining programs can be as important as production use.

“Esoteric” means pointless
Esoteric languages are rarely intended to replace production tools, but non-production does not mean meaningless. Their constraints can teach, provoke design questions, produce art or create a shared challenge. The 2025 discussion by Singer and Draper specifically argues for taking that reflective and educational value seriously.
Every esolang is a joke
Brainfuck, Befunge, Malbolge and Shakespeare show four different focal points: minimalism, spatial computation, difficulty and theatrical form. They may attract humor, but none requires a joke as its defining explanation.
A joke language cannot be technically interesting
INTERCAL shows that parody can coexist with a substantial language design. An executable joke can have an interpreter, a distinctive semantic model and a history worth studying. Conversely, a technically elaborate implementation does not remove the language’s comic purpose.
Only usable languages count
Practical usability is not the boundary. Some projects are useful for programming, some are useful mainly for experimentation, and some are deliberately nonfunctional. The relevant question is what role the language is intended to play.

How to describe one accurately
For a precise one-sentence description, name both the broad category and the defining aim: “Brainfuck is an esolang built around extreme minimalism”; “Befunge is an esolang organized around two-dimensional control flow”; “Shakespeare is an artistic, theatrical esolang”; or “INTERCAL is a humorous esolang that parodies conventional language design.” This wording avoids the false choice between “serious” and “joke.”
If the evidence about intent is incomplete, qualify the wording with “often described as,” “primarily designed to,” or “commonly classified by the community as.” Individual creators can combine parody, experimentation, challenge and art, so a careful description should explain the dominant aim rather than claim a rigid universal taxonomy.
Bottom line
An esolang is a broad family of intentionally unusual programming languages. A joke language is a language whose central purpose is humor or parody. They overlap whenever a joke is delivered through an esoteric design, as with INTERCAL, but they diverge when an esolang’s defining purpose is instead minimalism, a novel computational model, artistic form or difficulty. Execution, usefulness and Turing-completeness are separate technical questions; the most informative classification starts with intent.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are esoteric languages always jokes?
No. Humor is one possible esolang purpose, alongside minimalism, unusual computational models, artistic themes and deliberate difficulty.
Can a joke programming language actually work?
Yes. Some joke languages have interpreters and can be used for programming, while others are mainly conceptual or nonfunctional; usability does not determine whether the language is a joke.
Is Turing-completeness the dividing line?
No. Turing-completeness measures computational power, not design intent. Brainfuck is a compact example of an esolang that can be shown to be Turing-complete.
