Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteAn action RPG feels complicated when its loot, character build, and endgame progression keep changing the value of one another. A gear affix may strengthen a particular skill; that makes the affix more valuable to a character built around that skill, and it gives the player a new way to judge future drops. The result is not just more systems to learn, but more decisions that depend on each other.
Why can one item change how you judge every later drop?
Loot is a decision problem: does this item improve your character, or does it simply show a bigger number? A broad stat such as Attack or Defense can be a useful first signal, especially for a newer player. But a specific affix that supports the skills or play style your character relies on may be more useful than a higher general rating.

Blizzard Lead Systems Designer David Kim described this trade-off in an early Diablo IV design discussion. He distinguished broad Attack and Defense signals from affixes that could matter more to an optimized build. That post explains a design idea, not a guide to Diablo IV’s current item system.
Once you choose a build, drops become conditional. A bonus to a skill you use may be valuable; the same bonus may mean little to a different character. The player is no longer comparing items only by their displayed ratings. They are asking whether each item helps the build they intend to play.

How do loot systems move complexity between drops and crafting?
Readable drops reduce the first decision load
When many dropped items have many possible affixes, assessing each one can take attention away from playing. In its 2024 Season 4 article, Blizzard described reducing the number of affixes and the number of items dropped as a way to make upgrades easier to understand. This is an example of a design approach documented for that season, not a claim that the same details remain unchanged in 2026.
Crafting adds control—and another system to learn
The same Season 4 description moved some customization from random drops to crafting. In that implementation, Tempering added an affix selected from learned manuals, while Masterworking upgraded affixes using materials from the Pit. That can make item improvement more deliberate, but it also asks players to understand the crafting choices and the resources involved. Check current game information before treating those Season 4 mechanics as current instructions.
This is a common design trade-off: a game can make drops simpler to scan while placing more decisions at the crafting bench. Less clutter at one stage does not necessarily mean fewer systems overall.

Why do builds make character power harder to read?
A build is a plan for how a character deals damage, stays alive, and uses skills. Its complexity rises when several choices contribute to that plan: skills, passives, equipment affixes, crafting, and later progression. A decision in one area can change what counts as a good choice in another.
Kim’s early Diablo IV design discussion described character power as coming from several places, including skill ranks, character level, talent trees, items, and endgame progression. His phrase for the intended design philosophy was “Easy to learn, difficult to master.” That is a statement from an early-development post, not a description of every current mechanic.
The practical challenge is that a player must understand not only what a choice does, but what it supports. A skill may be effective on its own, yet an affix, passive, or crafted bonus could make it much more useful as part of a focused build. This creates room for specialization, while making upgrade decisions less obvious to someone who has not yet learned how the pieces fit together.

Why is endgame more than a higher difficulty setting?
Activities can form a progression path
In Last Epoch, the Monolith of Fate is described by Eleventh Hour Games’ support documentation as the main endgame system. Its timelines contain echoes; completing echoes builds stability, and quest echoes lead to bosses and choices of blessings. Players are therefore tracking a path of activities and milestones, not simply choosing a harder version of the campaign.

Last Epoch’s endgame faction documentation describes separate progression tracks with their own rewards or challenges, and says multiple endgame factions can be active at once. That means a player may be pursuing more than one kind of endgame goal in parallel.
More choice can make farming more strategic
A historical developer account of the Monolith overhaul explains a design goal behind adding player agency: echoes could offer distinct rewards, the map could form an expanding web of choices, and an encounter with the Shade of Orobyss could reset timeline progress while adding corruption. Those details describe the overhaul’s design context; they should not be read as a guarantee that every mechanic remains unchanged in the current game.

Reward choices can make farming feel more purposeful because players can pursue different objectives. The trade-off is a larger set of decisions about what to do next and how each activity advances progression.

There is no supported universal score that ranks action RPGs by complexity. A more useful comparison is to ask what the game makes you track, and how clearly it communicates the consequences of each choice. The following framework is a practical way to assess that; it is not a published scoring standard.

| Axis | Ask yourself | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Power sources | How many systems contribute to character strength? | More interacting sources mean more build decisions. Diablo IV’s early design discussion is one example of power spread across skills, levels, talents, items, and endgame progression. |
| Drop readability | Can you spot likely upgrades without calculating every affix? | Clearer signals reduce the effort of evaluating drops. Blizzard’s 2024 Season 4 article described reducing affixes and dropped items for that reason. |
| Crafting control | Can you deliberately improve an item, and what resources or limits shape that choice? | Crafting gives players agency while adding another system to understand. The Season 4 Tempering and Masterworking descriptions illustrate that trade-off. |
| Endgame agency | Do activity choices change rewards, challenges, or progression? | Meaningful choices can make endgame more strategic, while increasing the number of decisions to manage. The Monolith documentation and historical overhaul account provide examples. |
| Progression overlap | Can separate progression tracks be active at the same time? | Parallel tracks add goals and systems to follow; Last Epoch’s faction support page says multiple endgame factions can be active at once. |
These questions also help explain why one player may call a game deep and another may call it confusing. A single Reddit post, for example, phrased the search as wanting an action RPG “deeper and less mind numbing than D4, but also less confusing than POE.” That individual post illustrates one person’s preference; it does not establish how common that view is.
What is the trade-off between depth and complexity?
More interacting systems can let players shape a character around a preferred skill or play style. But as loot, build choices, crafting, and endgame progression become more connected, players need to learn more before they can reliably judge which choices are useful. That is why a game can feel approachable at first and still demand substantial planning later: the basic signals may be clear, while mastery depends on understanding how the systems reinforce one another.
